This month Sterling Says….“It was a busy year for our Service Department, thank you for your business!

Please refer to page 4 for the Maintenance Seminar 2018 schedule.

Also see my BRAKE REBUILD on the following page. On the early Model 2000XL’s we offered a brake that was

engaged by either the foot or park-ebrake, a1er that we moved the park-ebrake to the transmission. If you

have this older system and want to talk about upda2ng it, call me.

Now that we are ge4ng big storms with a lot of fresh snow in the West, look for areas on the sprockets or

wheels that may be building ice that could cause the tracks to stretch, if you are seeing this then break out the

ice and call me. Also remember winter fuel, make sure you have a winter blend!”

“In the early years of the Model 2000XL (2004-2008/2009) we used a combination system for the foot brake and

park-ebrake. This setup is a disc brake squeezing a rotor mounted to the front of the top gear of the transfer

case, it is engaged using either the foot brake or the park brake. After 2009 we moved away from that system of

dual use, the foot brake alone uses the disc brake to slow the transfer case and the park brake is hooked to a

drum brake on the output shaft on the Allison transmission. What I want to talk about here is rebuilding or ser-

vicing that disc brake system. We do keep all the parts for this system. The issues we have seen on this system

stem from the brake pads not moving or moving unevenly. Step one is to get the brake assembly out and onto

your bench and disassemble it (photo 1). Now refer to photo 2, if the bottom mounting holes are out of round

then the assembly needs to be replaced, if they are ok then keep reading...Next clean the rods and replace the

spring, both in photo 2.

Now switch back to photo 1 and look for grooves worn in the brake pad guides, if you can feel a grove then re-

place the guides, otherwise just polish with 220 grit sand paper. Also remove the pistons and clean off the

buildup caused from hot brake fluid, these can be cleaned with 220 grit sandpaper and brake clean spray. “

“The next thing is to refer to photo 3 and make sure the mounting pins are tack welded to the bracket. After that

then take a close look at the brake pads (photo 4), they may be worn unevenly or have cracks even though they

are not worn out, if so replace. Once you are ready to reassemble use Red Loctite and torque to 30 foot

pounds.”
