From the Rector
Lent is upon us. A time to prepare our hearts to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus. We here
at St. Timothy’s like to start Lent with a party! Come and join us on March 3rd to celebrate Mardi Gras
after church on Sunday.
Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday derives its name from the placing of ashes on the foreheads of participants to the words
"Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." It is a time to reflect on our mortality. The
service will be at 7 pm.
Palm Sunday
The first service of Holy Week is Palm Sunday, when we remember the entrance of Jesus into the city of
Jerusalem. He was triumphantly hailed as he rode a donkey across palm fronds into the city – to shouts of
“Hosanna in the Highest.”
Maundy Thursday
The Eucharist will be celebrated at 6:30 pm. Micheal Hueschen, is asking everyone to participate. He is
putting the service together as part of his fieldwork. After discussion with the Parish, we decided not to
have a potluck this year, but to provide a service that reflects the servanthood of believers. The purpose
of Maundy Thursday is to remember the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. This year we will be
participating in a traditional foot washing, following the commandment of Christ that we should imitate
His loving humility in the washing of the feet. You will not want to miss this special evening service. The
service will conclude with the stripping of the altar.
Good Friday
The origin of the term ‘Good Friday’ is unclear, but the meaning of the day is without doubt – it is the
Friday on which the Church keeps the anniversary of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ –where we will
experience the dramatic Good Friday readings. Join us at 6:30 pm to hear the story of what Christ went
through for us.
The Great Vigil of Easter
The Easter Vigil is the oldest of Christian holidays. It is a night of watching and rejoicing, the night of
transition from death to life, from grief to joy. This year we will be celebrating the Vigil at St. Paul’s Church
in St. Joseph. One of our youth will be Confirmed at this service. The Vigil starts at dusk with the Service of
Light – the blessing of the new fire and the lighting of the paschal candle. At this service, we renew our
baptismal vows. It is a time of recounting how God has moved through history and is active in our lives
today.
Easter Day
On this day, we will pull out all the stops, literally. The choir has prepared beautiful music that will bring
glory to God. It is on this day, we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and his victory over death. We
come together as a community to celebrate what God has done in our lives.
To get the full Easter experience, come to as many of the services as you are able. I promise, the Spirit of
God will move you in unexpected ways.
Peace,
Fr. Joel

Sunday Healing Ministry at St. Tim’s
The Prayers for Healing are held on the second and fourth Sunday of the
month during Eucharist. The “station” is in the vestibule to the left of the piano.
Fr. Terry & Karen Haughn will be at the “station” during that time. If anyone
feels the need for prayer for healing and anointing with oil, please come to
the “station” after you have received communion and they will pray with and
for you. You are welcome to also pray for others who would benefit from
prayer for healing. All prayer requests, and/or the subject of the prayer will
remain strictly confidential. Sunday dates in March are the 10th and the 24th.
Stewardship
Your 2019 pledge means so much. By pledging, you are also
renewing your commitment to engage in and support the continued
work of the church with your time and talent.
Thank you.
Annual Mardi Gras Pancake Brunch!
Come hungry on Sunday, March 3rd and join us in the social room for the
annual Mardi Gras Pancake Brunch, sponsored and served by St. Tim’s choir.
There will be a free-will donation basket and proceeds will support a new
sounds system and other choir needs.
Ash Wednesday Service
St. Timothy’s will host one Ash Wednesday Service on March 6th at 7:00 pm.
Every single One Dollar Bill that is placed in the offering plate will be
designated toward the Sunday Dollars Fund. For 2019these funds would
go towards driveway and parking lot upkeep and repair.

It’s time to ‘spring ahead’ 1 hour!
March 10th at 2:00 AM!
Lent Boxes
Sunday, March 10th, is the first Sunday in Lent. Please take a Lent Box in the
foyer, fill with change and return on Easter Morning. Money collected from the
boxes will support the Breakfast Project held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church
in Battle Creek, MI. St. Timothy parishioners and friends will choose a week to
serve in late summer.
Reaffirmation
Though not required for membership, the church does hope that all adult members will
make a mature public affirmation of their faith by being either confirmed or received.
We will have a class here at St. Tim’s beginning Sunday, March 10th and each Sunday
in Lent to explore our baptismal vows and how we live into them. Please come and
support your church family as we each explore our faith. There will be a service for
Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows, which will be included during the Easter Vigil on April
20th at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, St. Joseph, MI.
Pretzel Making
On Sunday, March 10th, youth (of all ages) are invited to join us for pretzel making
following the morning worship service until 11:30 am. The tradition of making pretzels
during Lent is a very old one. Traditionally, pretzel dough is simple and leaves out
many "extras" of sweeter, richer breads. Pretzels are shaped to represent arms
crossed in prayer, to remind us that Lent is a time of intentional prayer.
Growlers Baseball
It may seem that summer is a long way away, but plans are already in the works
for St. Timothy’s Family night at a Growlers game. There is a poster in the foyer
and a sign-up form to assist in choosing the perfect date. Early registration will
ensure that we will enjoy a tailgate party type meal, games, and reserved seating
with our entire group. If you have questions, please contact the office. Feel free
to invite family and friends to join us for a fun night with Christian friends! Everyone
had a great time last year! PLAY BALL!

Mutual Ministry Update
At our vestry retreat, vestry members revisited the survey questions posed to the parish a
year and a half ago. The answers that came out of the exercise reflected both continuing
concerns for the parish, as well as progress being made to strengthen our parish.
We continue the work to realize our mission and to make sure that what we are doing is
reflective of our parish core values. This includes seeking community service projects in our
immediate area, continuing to offer events that are inclusive of all in our parish and
inclusive of those we might invite from outside our parish. Our worship committee is working
on new ideas for worship that will enhance our worship experience. And we are discussing
ways to use our grounds to honor God's creation in new ways. All of this is with our mission
of growing together in Jesus Christ in mind.
Canon Bill Spaid visited with the vestry at our retreat and led us on an assessment of our
vitality and viability, using a tool that the diocese is testing. We are using that assessment
as another resource for strengthening St. Timothy's as a parish. We found that we need to
continue focusing our efforts on our mission and a clearer vision for the future of the parish.
