March 2019Bennington Project Independence Page -6-
Happy 10th Anniversary to the Dr. Richard A. Sleeman Center! "From a Historic Past to a Caring Future" Bennington Project Independence, Adult Day Service was founded in November of 1978, by the Bennington Elder Action Committee.
BPI formally began operation in September of 1979 in the basement of First Baptist Church in Bennington.
In 1982, BPI joined the Bennington Area Home Health Agency, the Area Agency on Aging and the Senior Center in the new Senior Citizens Service Center building at 124 Pleasant St.
In 2004, BPI purchased a historic 5.3 acre property on Harwood Hill for a new facility.
2005 was hallmarked by extensive planning and pursuit of grant funding for the New Home for BPI Harwood Hill project. Our campaign theme was “From a Historic Past to a Caring Future”. This summarizes BPI’s commitment to being good stewards of a historic Bennington property as well as our dedication to providing a new and expanded facility to provide increased services for frail older persons, younger adults with disabilities and their family caregivers throughout Bennington County.
Mr. Christopher Cole of Cole Company was hired as our Project Manager and Mr. Gary Corey of Centerline Architects was hired to complete the architectural design. Elizabeth Brawley, a nationally known designer for caring environments for persons with disabilities agreed to consult on our project. BPI Executive Director, Linda Wichlac was pivotal in the design process as she, at that time, had brought her over twenty years of Adult Day experience, staff, participant and families suggestions to the table.
The new facility project took on a life of its own in 2007. After tremendous effort, we were fortunate to receive many public and private grants for our
new facility. Our efforts for our capital campaign exceeded our expectations when one amazing donor Mrs. Lillian Seward stepped forward to contribute $2,500,000 to our project. This dramatically accelerated our time frame for our new home project.
We had the formal ground breaking for our new Adult Day Center on Mar. 24th 2008 with Mrs. Lillian Seward and the Dr. Richard Sleeman Family in attendance.
The building was named “The Dr. Richard A. Sleeman Center” in memory of Mrs. Seward’s beloved brother and respected community leader. Mrs. Seward also joined the BPI Board of Directors as an Honorary Lifetime Member.
BPI contracted with McDonald-Secor Associates as the General Contractor for our new home project. Green Mountain Timber Framers disassembled, cleaned and re-erected the original 1785 and 1860’s Barn Frames on their new foundations.
On Mar 23, 2009, The Dr. Richard A. Sleeman Center officially opened as the new home of Bennington Project Independence. Our new home is a sophisticated, elegant historic home that incorporates green technology and healthcare innovations. Our Housewarming and Dedication was held on May 19, 2009, with over 300 people.
As we are celebrating our 10th Anniversary of the Dr. Richard A. Sleeman Center, we have more work to be done. When the Orchard level is finished, The Dr. Richard A. Sleeman Center will be complete and we will truly be able to meet the growing needs of our community for many years to come!
Happy 10th Anniversary to the Dr. Richard A. Sleeman Center!
