PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

The past month has been quite exciting at Tom Longboat! February

was African Heritage Month, and our students participated in the

sharing of daily facts and inquiry questions. We had over 40 students

share their inquiry responses which were read for all to hear over the

announcements! A special thank you to our Student Council for

researching all of the heritage facts and questions for our school.

Our students have also been busy raising money for two very

important charitable organizations this month: We Foundation, and

Sick Kids Hospital. Our Valentine’s Dance raised $293 for We

Foundation, and the Candy Gram sales raised $312.75 for Sick Kids

Hospital. We are so proud to have our students working together

toward making others’ lives better.

Our Parent-Teacher interviews were held before the Family Day

weekend with great success. We would like to encourage you to

continue to remain in contact with your child’s teacher throughout

this term, and to ask as many questions as you may have about your

child’s progress.

On March 8th, we are hosting our First Annual Longboat’s Amazing

Adventures! Students in Grades 1-6 are being given the opportunity

to select three unique activities that are based in the arts, physical

education, and STEM. Students will rotate through their three

selections over the entire day, and have the opportunity to work with

different teachers and a new peer group. Our Kindergarten students

will have their own amazing adventures on March 7th, rotating

through three activities as a class. We look forward to hearing about

these adventures and planning more in the future!

We will be having our Family Math/STEM Night on Wednesday March

27th at 6:00 p.m. Set your calendars now! We hope to have as many

families as possible join us as we explore new math and STEM

challenges together!

Finally, a reminder that our March Break will be from March 11th-15th.

We wish everyone a very safe and happy week together with their

families.

Sincerely,

FEBRUARY WAS AFRICAN HERITAGE MONTH Ms Rajani’s Kindergarten students recently

learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, what

he stood for, and how his work impacts us

today. We took the opportunity to explore

concepts such as kindness, peace, and

dreams. These are our FREEDOM HANDS.

Dr King embraced the idea of "nonviolent

resistance" to protest discrimination in

America.

"Nonviolent resistance" is done without

yelling or fighting, and that it is a way of

protesting against something that a person

doesn't believe in without hurting other

people.

(“Freedom Hands” Art was inspired by Mrs Full’s Blog)

RECYCLING CELL PHONES FOR CONSERVATION

We will be taking part in the

“Gorillas on the Line….Answer the

Call” campaign which the Toronto

Zoo is participating. This North

American Zoo collaboration to raise

awareness about the plight of

gorillas in the wild is a synchronized

mobile phone recycling campaign which ties in with the Toronto Zoo’s PhoneApes cell

phone recycling program.

This campaign is taking place from February 1 to April 30, 2019. The goal of the

campaign is to engage 10,000 children and other community members in gorilla

conservation action and to collect 10,000 mobile phones for recycling. By working

together, we hope to generate excitement, facilitate participation, expand awareness

and celebrate collective conservation impact for gorillas. 100% of the funds raised will

be donated to on the ground conservation programs in Afria, such as Ape Action

Africa, Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project and Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA).

We will be collecting used cell phones until April 30, 2019, please drop these at the

office. Thank you.

We would like to remind parents that the staff parking lot is NOT TO BE

USED AS A DRIVE through for Pick-ups and Drop-offs.

In the interest of safety please do not drive down the staff parking lot.

Unfortunatley if parents are parking or driving in the staff parking lot this

VOLUNTEERING (From www.tdsb.on.ca) Parents and community members are encouraged to participate in volunteer activities in our

schools that support programs and services and help students succeed.

Here are some ways you can help in your child’s classroom or school:

o Reading with students who need extra help

o School plays or concerts

o Arranging material in the library

o Supervising children on field trips

o Collecting community materials for a classroom project

o Participate in meetings and activities of the School Council

Parents and community members who wish to volunteer must, like

all TDSB employees, complete a Police Reference Check (which will include a vulnerable

sector screening) and be cleared before they can tutor/mentor in any TDSB location or

participate in activities with our students.

Volunteers in schools cannot be used to perform activities that are the responsibility of teachers

or other Board employees, and must be limited to extra support activities.

PHONING IN YOUR CHILD’S

ABSENCE – SCHOOL MESSENGER As you know, since June we have had a new system managing

our Safe Arrival calls. The system has the ability for parents to call

in and register their child absent. In order to do this, the school

must have the number that you are calling from, ie if you cell

phone is on file at school it will recognize the number, home

number, etc. The number to call is:

1-833-250-2290

Similarly you can continue to call the office before 8:30am and

leave us a voicemail message. Tel 416.396.6610 Press 1.

MARBLE MAZES IN ROOM 202

HIGH WATER LEVELS BRINGS

INCREASED RISKS

The Toronto and Region Conservation monitors hazardous ice

conditions as thaw begins and are reminding everyone to be very careful around all

bodies of water. The first hint of warming weather and the promise of spring thaw can

bring extreme danger to the shores and surfaces of streams, rivers, ponds and lakes,

according to Toronto and Region Conservation.

As warmer temperatures arrive, stream banks become increasingly slippery and

unstable. Lake and river ice weakens, becoming thinner or with higher flows breaking

with little or no warning. During this time, the potential for flooding and ice jamming is

high.

Higher, faster-flowing water and extreme cold temperatures combine to create

increased dangers on or near rivers, streams and ponds for people wishing to enjoy

the seasonal changes. Parents and caregivers are being asked to keep children away

from stream banks, ponds and lakes.
