Recently, you may have heard a popular question being asked by NIGP, “What do you Aspire to?” I challenge you to really think about that question and set goals that will help you achieve your aspirations. Another challenge I have for you is to become actively engaged with MAPP and NIGP, even if it means having to step out of your comfort zone! Both MAPP and NIGP have so much to offer and help you on your professional journey! Below are some simple ways to become more involved in MAPP and NIGP.

*Network with peers at MAPP events and through our list-serve and social media accounts.

*Join and participate in NIGP’s Nsite communities; I highly recommend “purchissues”

*Take advantage of NIGP webinars which are FREE to NIGP members! And you can earn one contact hour to certification or recertification.

*Sign up for NIGP coursework!

This truly is an exciting time to be in public procurement and I am glad we are here together! There are big plans on the horizon for both MAPP and NIGP in 2019 and beyond. It is not too late to register for the 2019 MAPP Spring Conference and Reverse Vendor Fair. If you have not already registered I invite you to do so. If you need financial assistance MAPP does offer scholarships to help with registration. This year’s event features an impressive line-up of speakers, networking opportunities, and this is our year for the RVF. The bi-yearly RVF is a win-win-win; it benefits your agency (maximizes competition), the vendor community (shares with them how to do business with your agency), and our chapter, (this event helps MAPP with expenses for our future conferences)! Please be promoting the RVF to your vendor community!! New to our conference this year we will be working together on a service project collecting personal items and writing cards for veterans in Missouri and Kansas. The deadline to register is March 29, 2019.

Registration is now open for NIGP Forum which will be held in the capital of Texas Austin, August 25th -28th. Register before April 30th to save $140 which is nearly double the savings from last year. The early bird rate is $800 for NIGP members. Forum is the largest educational conference exclusively for public procurement in North America where peers share ideas, engage and inspire one another, develop strong connections and gain a better understanding of how to tackle challenges they face along the way! If you cannot attend in person, new this year NIGP is offering the chance to participate in select sessions virtually. NIGP will be announcing more details soon! NIGP offers scholarships to attend forum if you are a member in good standing and first time forum attendee. Scholarships are $2,500 to cover expenses associated with attending the event. The deadline to apply is April 1st! ...continued on next page

I would also like to thank our outgoing board members for their commitment and service to MAPP: Stacia Dawson, CPPB, Public Affairs/Research and Specifications Chair Jessica Andres, Program Chair Alice Winkelman, CPPB, Nominations Chair.

Serving as the 2019 MAPP President is truly one of the greatest honors of my professional career! I have the privilege of working alongside our great board members and serving you, my fellow MAPP members!

April 24 Webinar - Groundhog Day………..Are You Stuck on Repeat? Just like in the 1990’s movie Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray, we all get stuck in a cycle of repeat. When it comes to work, we can easily get into a pattern or a routine of familiarity and find ourselves doing the same things the same way for years, maybe even decades. Sometimes it's hard to notice because we have just adapted. Though this may be a comfortable place to pause for a while, we shouldn’t stay there for long.

NIGP CHAPTER ACADEMY 2019 By: Michelle Sorensen, CPPB – Procurement Officer for the City of Columbia, Columbia, MO MAPP Historian 2019

Talk about a SUPER, SUPER event. The NIGP Chapter Academy was held February 14 – February 16 in Herndon, Virginia, with over 90 chapters represented. I was honored to represent MAPP at Chapter Academy and extremely grateful for the opportunity to attend. The facilitators, Dr. Steve Swafford, Dr. Jill McCrory and Molly Whalen were infectious with their eagerness to explore and share the Procurement profession. When I walked into the meeting room I was struck by the number of people in the room representing the ENORMOUS amount of procurement knowledge. Discussion’s brought out ideas to help the board work with the membership, ideas to implement programs and reconnect members to their strengths within the organization. It seems these are issues across the states, even in Hawaii! I had several “a-ha” moments; the one that really hit home for me was “Rotating Your Iceberg”. This exercise started out with the four groups of people; the analyzer, controller, stabilizer and persuader. The analyzer is good at logical approaches and uncomfortable when guidelines are not followed and likes to be correct. The controller is results oriented, needs control and is uncomfortable when not in control, feeling used and hates inefficiency. The stabilizer loves team projects and being congenial they are uncomfortable with change and feeling unappreciated. The persuader is people oriented, needs to be liked and are uncomfortable with no flexibility and being criticized. I found I am an analyzer, I do not like snap decisions and I overthink everything! But, the most important thing that I took away from this exercise is the insight that we are all different in the way we think and act. I found that I can use this knowledge when dealing with difficult people, negotiating contracts and just in life. A small amount of understanding is a huge asset. I cannot say enough about the wonderful experience of the Academy. From breakfast, breakouts, group activities (by the way we can NOT build a bike) and the knowledge……………….Oh the knowledge!! If you ever get the chance to attend the NIGP Chapter Academy; DO, you will not be sorry!!
