From the Principal’s Desk...
Dear Holy Rosary Families,
As we begin Lent, the holiest time of the Christian year, we keep in mind that our goal is
to draw closer to God. During this six week period, when we prepare for the Resurrection
of Our lord Jesus Christ, we strive to become closer to Him by praying, fasting, and
almsgiving. Lent reminds us of the sacrifice Jesus made for our sins.
At Holy Rosary, our student body is meeting every Thursday morning before school for
a prayer service. In addition, a crown of thorns will serve as a visual reminder of Lent.
The students will remove a thorn from the crown each time they sacrifice, say extra
prayers, or do something for someone else. When we break for Easter, we hope to have re-
moved all the thorns from Jesus’ crown.
At home, you and your children can also use this special time of Lent to make a fresh
start and find peace with God. The eight Beatitudes are a wonderful guide for us dur-
ing Lent. Recognize your need for God and be humble, mourn for your sins, be kind,
long for Christ, show mercy, be selfless, be a peacemaker, and openly live for Christ. As
you follow these principles in your personal way, your children are noticing, and you
are sharing with them a picture of what a true disciple of Christ looks like.
We are all human and, we will fall, but again, another valuable lesson for your chil-
dren, is to watch you pick yourself up and continue on.
May this lent bring you and your children closer to Jesus Christ.
God’s Graces to you!
Mary Ann

Dear Parents and Guardians:
This year, the first day of March coincides with the First Sunday of Lent. Prayer, fasting and almsgiv-
ing are the three pillars of Lent, we learn from the gospel according to Matthew (6:1-18), which is
proclaimed on Ash Wednesday. Earlier in Matthew’s gospel (4:1-11), we learn about the three temp-
tations of Jesus by Satan in the desert, which gospel is proclaimed on the First Sunday of Lent. The
practice of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, especially during Lent, help us overcome our temptations
like Jesus overcame his temptations.
“The key to fruitful observance of these practices is to recognize their link to baptismal renewal,”
the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops states on its website. “We are called not just to abstain
from sin during Lent, but to true conversion of our hearts and minds as followers of Christ. We re-
call those waters in which we were baptized into Christ’s death, died to sin and evil, and began new
life in Christ.”
Our word Lent comes from the Old English word lencten, meaning spring—literally, lengthening (of
daylight hours).
The Second Vatican Council focuses our attention on Lent as a “period of closer attention to the
Word of God and more ardent prayer” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 109).
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Lent is “the liturgical season of forty days which
begins with Ash Wednesday and ends with the celebration of the Pascal Mystery (Easter Triduum).
Lent is the primary penitential season in the Church’s liturgical year, reflecting the forty days Jesus
spent in the desert in fasting and prayer” (Glossary).
From the first day of Lent until the last day of Lent, and beyond, may prayer, fasting and almsgiving
be not only the three pillars of Lent, but also the three pillars of our lives.
God bless you,
A Letter from the Governing Board of Pastors
Father Quindlen, Epiphany of Our Lord Parish, Plymouth Meeting

Science
PreK and kindergarten have been spending time with their Science Buddies learning about winter and snow. We are
having fun, even though we haven't had too much snow this winter.
First grade has been using their dragon racers to learn all about forces and motion.
Second grade has been learning all about birds and are almost finished building their bird feeders. They will be hang-
ing them on the trees near the school.
Third grade is almost finished learning about the solar system. There is so much to discover about space.
Fourth grade has been learning about electricity. They have been designing and building their own series and paral-
lel circuits.

3rd Grade
February was a busy month in 3rd grade. We completed a project for Black History Month where we researched
important African Americans throughout history and created a Google Slides Presentation to teach our classmates
about them. Some of the people we researched included Jackie Robinson, Mae C. Jemison, Thurgood Marshall, Book-
er T. Washington, and many more! In Math we just completed designing our own dream houses using area and pe-
rimeter. This allowed the students to apply their knowledge to a real world concept, while also using their creativity.
Now we will be moving on to fractions in March. In Religion, we completed learning about the sacraments and will
now focus on the Liturgical Calendar and Lent. March will be a month filled with Terra Nova preparation, since it is
their first year testing. We are excited to start a new month together!
—Mrs. Fitzpatrick (3-A) and Ms. Houser (3-B)
Kindergarten
Kindergarten class reached a special milestone this month! We celebrated our 100th Day of School! We have been
counting up to this day since the first day of Kindergarten and could not wait to reach it! We spent the entire day
learning the 100 way! We made 100 Day posters which included drawing what we think we will look like in 100
years, drawing 100 things we would love to have, what we would spend 100 dollars on, and all the different things
we learned in 100 days! For math class, we enjoyed a Hershey Kiss Scavenger Hunt! Mrs. Pickering hid 100 Hershey
Kisses all throughout our classroom! Each kiss had a number from 0-100 written on the bottom of it. We had to find
the kiss, identify the number, locate the number on our 100 chart and color it in. The best part was that we could
keep any Hershey Kiss we found! It was so much fun! In the afternoon, we worked hard on our 100 Day cen-
ters. We built a structure made out of 100 cups, created 100 day headband, "wrote the room" trying to write 100
words, created a 100 connecting cube creation, and played "Race to 100," which helped us practice our counting
skills. We had so much fun celebrating our 100 day of kindergarten!!!
—Mrs. Pickering
Pre-K
February has been a very heart-felt month in the Pre-K classroom. The class has had many lessons in kindness, posi-
tivity, and how to treat others the way Jesus taught us. The class participated in a project where they created heart
mobiles out of the compliments they gave each other. In just a little over a month, the class has filled up their 100
Acts of Kindness with 75 hearts: only 25 to go! Along with learning a new letter and number each week, literary
elements have been the highlight of many lessons. The class learned all about characters, setting, and sequencing of
events in a story!

5th Grade
Grade 5 has been busy in ELA! Keeping students engaged provides fun activities that still promote learning. The
class enjoys their vocabulary review of spelling words, using Scrabble tiles. Students team up (assigned by seating
arrangements or by Mrs. Luthy) and use their tiles to spell words correctly. The students accumulate points to
earn "temporary bragging rights." The tactile approach improves spelling on the vocabulary tests.
Students have recently attempted a new approach to reading comprehension. After reading our paired readings,
students locate comprehension questions which are scattered throughout the room. Specific tasks within the
questions are provided, and the students must locate the answers in the assigned texts. Students provide feedback
as to what worked, and how the activity might be improved. Many ask, "When can we do this again?"
The class is also at the edge of their seats as they read A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. A paired reading
within the same text, the students learn about the struggles of children their own age during the Sudan War. Stu-
dents follow along while they listen to the corresponding audio book. It is enjoyable to listen to the different ac-
cents used for each character within the reading.
—Mrs. Luthy
1st Grade
First grade had a very busy February. On Valentine's day they started their day with a Valentine breakfast. They
enjoyed fruit, muffins, yogurt. and juice boxes provided by the wonderful parents of 1A. They ended their party by
making a puppy totally from hearts . They were awesome. The highlight of the month was celebrating their 100th
Day of school. They have been looking forward to this day since the first day they counted 1. They came to
school (even Mrs. Koneski) dressed as if they were 100 years old. They had a presentation for their parents, sib-
lings, grandparents, Mrs. Gilman and Father Quindlen and told them what they would look like, what they would be
doing, and what they would say when they were 100 years old. Every enjoyed it and definitely had some laughs.
They also did many activities that day involving the number 100, read 100 day books, and even enjoyed a 100 day
snack with 100 items. They will end their month by learning about the season of Lent. They will talk about what
they would like to give up for Lent, what good deeds they would like to do , and how much they love Jesus.
—Mrs. Koneski

2nd Grade
Second Graders are preparing for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Three parishes will be receiving
Reconciliation in March! We just wrapped up triple digit addition and subtraction and are moving into money and
time! I already predict there will be some mathematicians and accountants in this class! We are hoping to have some
snow and just finished our Snow Day writings. Hopefully a snow day will be upon us soon! Second graders are also
preparing for Dr. Seuss's birthday on March 2 and have several fun activities planned!
—Ms. Reale
Middle School ELA
Grade Six has just completed writing a descriptive essay of a favorite place using sensory details, figurative language,
along with precise adjectives, nouns, verbs, and adverbs. The students went through the writing process of brain-
storming, draft composition, self-edit, revision, and publication. Presently, we are journeying through a short story
unit where we met a boy who saved a family friend’s gold claim in the Klondike from stampeders; we also joined a
young boy and his goat who survived three days in a blizzard in a haystack on the outskirts of his Polish village.
Grade Seven has just completed their research paper. They focused on Black American musicians or artists that had
a positive impact on society. Once the students decided on an approved topic, they began researching on the inter-
net and at the library. The students created bibliography cards for each of their seven required sources. The stu-
dents extrapolated information from the sources constructing notecards to keep track of the information they
found. The students composed their paper in MLA format using parenthetical citations and a works cited page to
avoid plagiarism. Students will be creating an oral presentation highlighting their topic’s life with its challenges and
accomplishments. In literature, the students are reading and analyzing short stories with the focus on different story
elements. We just finished a story by Ray Bradbury with its setting on Venus where it rains every day except one day
of the year. The story element we analyzed was setting, and its impact on the plot.
Grade Eight has also just completed a research paper. They focused on Black American authors and activists. The
students will be presenting a memorized poem or speech by the person they chose for their research project giving
each other some insight into this American’s life with a focus on how they became an author/activist and their ac-
complishments as such. In literature, the students are reading and analyzing Greek Mythology. We have been com-
paring the myths to Christian beliefs using the Bible as our textual source.
