March 27th, 2018 SIR Hikers HARD Hike: Augustin Bernal To Pleasanton Ridge
Hike Description: This hike winds up the forested side of the ridge above Pleasanton at an easy grade mostly on fireroad with one single track shortcut. There are occasional enticing views to the east. Whenwe reach the top we are presented with sweeping vistas from Mt. Diablo in the north to Sunol in the south and out east over Pleasanton and Livermore. The forest walk continues as we head north along the ridge eventually giving way to open grassland, full views and a bench and picnic table at our turnaround. Total distance is just under 6 miles and under 1200 to 1500 feet of elevation gain with no difficult climbing. On the return we will glimpse over the west side of Pleasanton ridge edge when we turn south for a loop back along the ridge. We return down the trail in Augustin Bernal to the parking lot.
The staging area is the Augustin Bernal parking area at the end of Golden Eagle way off Foothill road in Pleasanton.
Bring: Water, sturdy boots, hat, and, if you use them, trekking poles. There are restrooms at the staging area..
Ride-sharing is required: Golden Eagle Way passes through a gated community and we have 4 car passes to gain access to Augustin Bernal Community Park. You must be in a car with a pass or you willnot be allowed access. For those who want to ride-share from Walnut Creek (recommended), meet at the downtown Walnut Creek movie theater parking garage at 1201 Locust Street, Walnut Creek, for a departure at 9:20. Enter either on California Ave or Locust Street. Meet in the middle of the 3rd floor. If you would rather drive yourself, please arrange to meet one of the cars at Alviso Adobe Community Park 3465 Old Foothill Rd, Pleasanton. Directions to the Trailhead: From Walnut Creek take 680 south to Bernal exit south of 580. Head west on Bernal to Foothill Rd and turn south on Foothill Rd. Turn right on Golden Eagle Way to the trailhead. If you are meeting a car with a pass at Alviso Adobe Community Park 3465 Old Foothill Rd, Pleasanton, take the Bernal exit from southbound I-680. At the bottom of the ramp turn left on Bernal, then right on Foothill Rd. Alviso Adobe Community Park is less than a mile.
Optional Lunch: at the Hopyard Ale House and Grill 3015 Hopyard Rd, Pleasanton. From Augustin Bernal Community Park take Golden Eagle Way, turn left on Foothill Rd, right on Bernal Ave, left on Valley Ave., left on Hopyard Rd. – 335 ft turn right for the restaurant.
