A Message from our Pastor

Dear Parishioners, This Wednesday, March 6th is Ash Wednesday, when we begin the discipline of Lent. We embrace this penitential season in union with Christians throughout the world and in a particular way, with all the Elect who will be initiated into the Church during the solemn rites of the Easter Vigil. We know of Lent as a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, as well as a time to take inventory of our lives in order to uncover those realities that cry out for healing and tender mercy. In his Holy Rule, St. Benedict taught that the life of a monk ought to be a continuous Lent. (Ch. 49:1) Many of us are pushed to our limits with just one season of

Lent. An entire lifetime of Lent seems preposterous. But lest the monastic become discouraged at the very start of his/her vocation, Benedict offers the following consolation:

Do not be daunted immediately by fear and run away from the road that leads to salvation. It is bound to be narrow at the outset. But as we progress in this way of life and in faith, we shall run on the path of God’s commandments, our hearts overflowing with the inexpressible delight of love. (Prologue 48-49)

Because St. Benedict saw the monastic life as an ongoing enterprise – a lifelong endeavor of conversion that could only be sustained by God’s grace, he could suggest that all of life be a perpetual Lent. I suspect that he would also include Easter, the culmination of Lent, as one of the constants in life as well. Thus we are immersed, by virtue of our Baptism, into a dynamic process of dying to sin and rising to new life. This never-ending cycle is by no means unique to monasticism but is the hallmark of the entire Christian faith, of which monasticism is but a microcosm.

And so as we set out to welcome another season of Lent with the various penances that are designed to support and not hinder us on “that road that leads to salvation,” moderation and balance are qualities to keep in mind. Less is more. Remember, we are not trying to delude ourselves into thinking that we are not in need of God’s merciful love. The ultimate realization we should reach at the end of Lent is that salvation is from God alone. It cannot be earned by our penitential practices, however heroic they may be. Salvation is a free gift, and we are but earthen vessels into which it is so generously poured.

As we begin this Lenten time of fasting and abstinence, it is also a time when, with heavy but grateful hearts, our parishioners bid farewell to Fr. Kenneth. After 38 years of faithful service to, not only the people of St. Joan of Arc Parish, but to the entire local church of Joliet, Father is returning to our monastic enclosure for a much-deserved time of retirement from active ministry. Those of you who know Fr. Kenneth, however, are aware that he will never fully retire. He will simply move from one ministerial expression to another. In the quiet and solitude of the abbey, Father will undoubtedly continue one of the noble works for which he will be forever beloved, i.e., his thoughtful and prayerful greeting cards. (This is also one of those traditional works that, unfortunately, is being quickly lost.) As we thank Fr. Kenneth for his many years of priestly service, let us offer the following blessing prayer by the late John O’ Donohue, entitled, For Retirement. This is where your life has arrived, After all the years of effort and toil; Look back with graciousness and thanks On all your great and quiet achievements. Lenten Regulations for Fasting and Abstinence

Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. All from the age of 18 years up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Church year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addi-tion to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

Media Ministry Volunteers Needed We are still in need of a few more volun-teers for our Media Ministry. These vol-unteers would help with the use of tech-nology (primarily the laptop and screen) during our liturgical celebrations. We currently use the laptop for the image of the day, plus also for selected lyrics during the Mass. We are looking for volunteers to assist with running the Power-Point Slide Show which displays the appropriate images and lyrics during the weekend Masses. It is VERY EASY to use: prior experience with computers is help-ful, but NOT required. The primary requirement for volunteers would be to arrive at least 15 minutes before the assigned liturgy. The instructions are scripted, so it is simply a matter of following the script to display the appropriate images/lyrics. We’d like to get a group of volunteers for each Mass, so that the responsibility does not fall too heavily upon just a few individuals. We are in need of addi-tional volunteers for ALL Masses. Lenten Devotions The Holy Season of Lent starts this week. During this season, we will once again offer Friday night devotions, as a time of prayer and meditation during Lent. We will alternate between Taize Prayer and Sta-tions of the Cross. Taize Prayer includes simple sung refrains, Scripture reading, silent reflection, and Prayer Around the Cross. Stations of the Cross includes praying the traditional stations, enhanced with a PowerPoint slideshow of each station. Discernment for New SJA School Board Members

The process is now underway to dis-cern new school board members for the upcoming school year. The St. Joan of Arc School Board includes nine mem-bers from St. Joan of Arc Parish, each of whom serves for a term of three

years. Up to nine Discernment Candidates can undergo the discernment process for the 3 open positions. The mandato-ry meeting for Discernment Candidates is scheduled for Monday March 11th at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. Bucket Bonanza

It’s almost time for the 19th Annual Buck-et Bonanza sponsored by the Peace and Social Justice Ministry. We will be col-lecting buckets of cleaning supplies for people who cannot use food stamps to purchase these items.

The buckets will be distributed after Mass the weekend of March 9/10. We ask that you take home a bucket and re-turn it filled with cleaning supplies the weekend of March 16/17. The buckets will be distributed by FISH, Lisle Township Food Pantry, People’s Resource Center, and Sharing Connections Furniture Bank.

Sacrament of Confirmation: Reception of a Sacrament requires adequate knowledge and preparation. Eighth Grade Confirma-tion preparation must be immediately preceded by three consec-utive years of regular attendance in religious instruction. Adoration Chapel: Perpetual Exposition of the Blessed Sacra-ment is observed in the Parish Center Adoration Chapel. The chapel is open to the public from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM daily, and at all other times for those with security cards. St. Monica Prayer Group: On the first Monday of each month at 7:00 PM in the church, prayers are offered for the conversion and return to the Catholic faith of loved ones. Rosary: The Rosary is prayed prior to 8:15 AM Mass Monday-Saturday. A complete scriptural Rosary is prayed on Wednes-days at 7:00 PM in the Adoration Chapel in the Parish Center. This also includes prayers of thanksgiving, praise, petition, and blessing over the Prayer Blankets and their recipients.

Prayers for Life: Prayers for greater respect for human life are offered in the Children’s Chapel on the first Friday of each month following the 8:15 AM Mass. The Rosary is also prayed for this this intention in the Children’s Chapel on the first Satur-day of each month following the 8:15 AM Mass. Benedictine Spirituality Group: This group meets on the sec-ond Tuesday of each month and is for those who have an inter-est in the spirituality enshrined in the Rule of St. Benedict. Gatherings are informal and entail Lectio Divina, a presenta-tion on a chapter of the Rule of St. Benedict, and informal shar-ing. Brothers in Christ: This group for men, 21 and over, meets each Saturday from 7:00 to 8:00 AM and includes Morning Prayer, small group discussion, and reflection on the Sunday readings.
