Though March does not oftenelicit images of youngstersbuilding campfires or playinggames in the pool, it is a greattime for parents to start think-ing about summer camps fortheir kids.
Summer camp is often some-thing kids look forward to, andsomething they will fondly re-call long after they reach adult-hood. For many kids, summercamp provides a first taste ofindependence, as youngstersspend significant time awayfrom home without their par-ents for the first time in theirlives.
But as great an experience assummer camp can be foryoungsters, it can be just as dif-ficult an experience if parentsdon't find the right fit for theirchildren. That's why it be-hooves parents to start thinkingabout summer camps for theirkids in winter, before campsstart filling out their rosters, which tends to happen in earlyspring. The following are a fewthings parents should take intoconsideration when seeking asummer camp for their kids.
The right summer camp staffcan make all the difference. Many children are understand-ably shy when arriving at asummer camp, as their friendsfrom back home might not bejoining them. That can makekids hesitant to participate inactivities or less enthusiasticabout those activities. But agood staff will know how tomake kids feel welcome, whichshould help them come out oftheir shells and make the mostof their summer camp experi-ences. The quality of staffs canvary significantly depending onthe camp, so it's important thatparents ask camp representa-tives about their staffs beforemaking any commitments. Askhow long the staff has been to-gether and the types of trainingnew and even veteran staffmembers undergo before thestart of camp season? Does thetraining include first aid andemergency medical trainingand certification?
It's also good to ask about thevetting process the camp em-ploys before hiring new staff, including the extent of its back-ground checks. Are criminalbackground checks conducted?
How many references must po-tential staff members supply tobe considered for employment?A good camp will be forthcom-ing with answers to all of yourquestions, so eliminate thosethat appear hesitant to share in-formation about their staffs.
When vetting camps for kids, parents should ask what a typ-ical day is like once the seasonhits full swing. Many parentswant their youngsters to have awell-rounded experience, while others might want theirkids to attend a more special-ized camp, whether it's a sportscamp focusing on a particularsport or a music camp devotedto helping kids become bettermusicians. Regardless of thetype of camp parents are con-sidering for their kids, theyshould ask about what dailylife at the camp is like. Ask tosee schedules and how strictlycamps adhere to those sched-ules. When considering spe-cialized camps, ask the staffrepresentative if kids will havethe chance to simply have a lit-tle fun and which types ofrecreational activities areplanned to give kids a breakfrom what are often rigorousschedules.
Another thing parents mustconsider before choosing asummer camp for their kids isthe goals of each individualcamp. A camp should be dedi-cated to ensuring kids have fun, even when kids are attendingmore specialized camps thattend to be more strict. In addi-tion, parents should look for acamp that wants its attendees tofoster relationships with theirfellow campers. Camp can belonely for some youngsters, es-pecially those attending sum-mer camp for the first time, buta summer camp that strives topromote friendship among itscampers can reduce, if noteliminate, any feelings ofhomesickness.
Late winter is when parentsshould start looking at summercamps for their kids, and thereare a host of factors moms anddads should take into consider-ation during the vetting processto ensure their youngsters haveas much fun as possible.

Summer Camp Tip #6
TALK TO YOUR CHILDAsk if he or she wants to go to
summer camp. Tell your childabout the activities offered.Share any brochures that youmay have about the camp. Ifyour child truly does not want togo don't force the issue. Giveyour child another year or twoand then bring it up again.
Summer Camp Tip #7
HOMESICKNESSHomesickness happens. Tell
your child in advance that it isnormal to be homesick the firstnight or two. Encourage yourchild to phone home if this hap-pens. If you get the homesickcall resist the urge to pick upyour child. Don't promise to doso. Reassure your child that thefeeling will pass.
