There are many reasons to be excited about the arrival of another WHL season. As the premier juniorhockey league in the world, we all take great interest in watching the remarkable progress our topprospects make during the course of the WHL season. From the established WHL veterans alreadydrafted by NHL Clubs, to the top rated prospects for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, to the new crop ofhighly touted rookies entering the WHL, these young stars will excite fans in all of our WHL markets.The WHL provides an ideal environment for players to develop as they continue to pursue their dreamof playing in the NHL or representing their country in a major international competition. Many of thesetop draft eligible prospects for the 2014 NHL Draft will have the opportunity to showcase their skills asthe WHL hosts the CHL / NHL Top Prospects game, January 15, in Calgary.The WHL also takes great pride in offering our players the best academic and hockey opportunitiespossible, as we award over 325 WHL Scholarships to graduate players each season, while more than 20percent of all NHL players got their start in the WHL.As you cheer on your favorite WHL team in their quest to capture the Ed Chynoweth Cup and a berth inthe MasterCard Memorial Cup, I am sure you will enjoy watching the world’s finest young prospects inaction throughout the WHL.

A Welcome from the President

Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. With the way the Hockey Club finished last year the 2013-2014 season has the potential to be very special. Mirrored in last place at Christmas, the Club posted the fifth best record in the WHL in the second half of the season and made the playoffs for a 15th straight year, while finishing with a .500 or better record for a 14th consecutive season (which are both the longest active streaks in the WHL).

Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on ice success. This year for the first time in franchise history one of our players has the potential to be the first overall selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. With that comes added pressure to perform, but with reigning WHL Coach of the Year, Ryan McGill leading our team, Sam Reinhart and the rest of the players will receive the necessary guidance and leadership in achieving all of their goals.

With the invaluable experience our team gained last season, we expect our returning players along with our new prospects to once again battle for contention in the very competitive Eastern Conference. Our expectations of success both on and off the ice will not change. Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice.

ICE NOTES VS RED DEERICE CHIPS: The KOOTENAY ICE enter tonight’s action with a 37-24-2-2 record (20-10-0-2 at home, 17-14-2-0 on the road, 0-2 in overtime, 5-2 in shootouts) and in fifth place in the EASTERN CONFERENCE...KOOTENAY is 19-8-0-1 since the Christmas Break...After tonight’s game the ICE will host MEDICINE HAT (March 7) and REGINA (March 8).

DID YOU KNOW: Lifetime KOOTENAY has a 58-61-13-3 record against the RED DEER franchise (34-27-8-1 at home, 24-34-5-2 on the road, 1-4-13-3 in overtime)...The ICE will finish the 2013-2014 regular season with a .500 or better record for a League record 15th consecutive season (KAMLOOPS BLAZERS - 1982 - 1996 - previous record)...KOOTENAY was 11-2-0-0 in the month of February...The ICE are 18-5-0-0 against the EAST DIVISION this season (10-1-0-0 at home, 8-4-0-0 on the road)...SAM REINHART, who set a franchise record for most consecutive games with an assist at 15 (January 29th to February 28th), also set a franchise record for the most consecutive games with a point at 22 games (18-30-48 in span)…REINHART, who is second in the WHL in assists with 60, needs seven more assist to set the franchise record for most assists in one season (66 - set by JARRET STOLL in 2000 - 2001)...MACKENZIE SKAPSKI, who is tied for fifth in the League in save percentage (.917), is tenth in the WHL in goals against average (2.68)…SKAPSKI is tied for first in the LEAGUE for shootout wins with five...JAEDON DESCHENEAU, who is tied for seventh in the WHL in goals scored with 39, is tied for sixth in the League in points with 88 (39-49-88)...AUSTIN VETTERL has played in 195 WHL career games (VANCOUVER / KOOTENAY)...LANDON CROSS has played in 185 WHL career games (KAMLOOPS / KOOTENAY).

INJURIES: Forward KYLE O’CONNOR will be out of the KOOTENAY line up day to day with a lower body injury...Forward JON MARTIN will be out of the ICE line up one week with an illness...Forward TIM BOZON will be out of the KOOTENAY line up for an undetermined amount of time with an illness...Forward RYAN CHYNOWETH will be out of the ICE line up for an undetermined amount of time with an upper body injury...Defenseman TANNER FAITH will be out of the KOOTENAY line up three to five months with an upper body injury.

ONE YEAR AGO: After 65 games of the 2012-2013 season the ICE were 33-30-2-0, after 66 games were 33-31-2-0 and after 67 games were 33-32-2-0.
