Message from the President Blue Valley Quilters Guild - November 2020 Patchworks Zoom Meeting: ……November 4 Location: Village on Antioch 14895 Antioch Overland Park, KS The church is on the northeast corner of 150th St. & Antioch. Social hour @ 9:00 Meeting @ 9:30 Please park on the south side of the church and enter through the south door The Blue Valley Quilters Guild is dedicated to preserving and teaching the fine art of quilting. We welcome all newcomers as well as experienced quilters to be part of this guild. May March April What a great program Kelly Ashton gave at our October meeting! And, what a great turnout of members attending! At one point, Zoom indicated we had 102 participants…up from 71 in September. While those numbers may be off a bit because of members joining the meeting, leaving, and then rejoining again, we still had a wonderful attendance. With the upcoming November program by Trisch Price & Jenifer Dick, I think we will surpass October’s attendance. Once again, the program will be first up so don’t be late. I have finished my Sampler Challenge – just need to take 2-3 photos to mail to Stephanie Dodson by November 24. I have also finished quite a few UFOs…guess semi-quarantining has some advantages. If you did not hear at the October meeting, it was decided that we will not be having Show & Tell as a part of our Zoom meetings. The participation was low and truthfully the quilts show much better when you post them on our Facebook page. So, until we can meet in person again, please continue posting your UFOs and other quilts finished on Facebook. Think I’ll go make a couple of acorn blocks and some present blocks. I have heard the VP Programs are gathering a LOT of very nice prizes for the December meeting. In the meantime, Happy Halloween! Stay informed of all that’s happening during the Guild’s Time Out. Lots of fun in the horizon. Keep up to speed through this Newsletter, our Website and our private Facebook page!

What a great program Kelly Ashton gave at our October meeting! And, what a great turnout of members attending! At one point, Zoom indicated we had 102 participants…up from 71 in September. Sit & Stitch

If you ever have questions concerning Sit & Stitch please email or call me,

Wilma Lamfers, [email protected] or 913-341-3250.

We have two workshops that participants have paid the fees. Those are the machine feet and the paper-pieced Block of the Month star. When we are able to schedule the above workshops you will have the ability to opt-out if you signed up previously and are unable to attend on the scheduled date. Your fee will be returned to you.

We continue to look for a suitable location for the Sit & Stitch work-shops. We're hoping to find a location where we can store our equip-ment. Please contact us if you have an idea as where we might be able to meet.

As always, we would love for you to suggest possible projects and/or your willingness to lead a workshop.

Thank you to all who have finished and turned in quilts for our community partners.

In October we delivered 8 quilts to SafeHome, 7 quilts to Olathe Hospice House, 5

Quilts to Olathe Cancer Center, and 2 quilts and 60 flannel pads to the Overland

Park Regional Medical Center NICU.

Our Avenue of Life project needs to wrap up. Due to COVID, the opening of the

residence for homeless youth was indefinitely delayed. The residence is now

open, but to follow CDC regulations, the project had to be revised. The residence

will now be only girls, ages 16-24. Since each resident must have a private room,

there will be fewer residents. We have 15 quilts on hand, and there are a few more

out there, I think. If those quilts could be finished in November, we will be able to

deliver the entire group before or soon after the December guild meeting.

Applicants are currently being reviewed, and some of the women have small

children. If appropriate, we will supply child quilts from the supply of small Sew

Day quilts we have on hand.

If you finish a quilt for the Avenue of Life project, please post a picture on the

Facebook page, wIth your name and identify the quilt as one for Avenue of Life so

Mindy can put together an album of all the quilts made for this project. This was a

big undertaking, but the guild rose to the challenge. Well done!

As promised, we will draw for a gift card at the November meeting from the names

of those who took kits to finish and returned them in the last two months. You’ve

helped put a small dent in the backlog of kits in the storeroom, but there are

more! Contact Joyce or Judy to get a kit or two!

A last word regarding quilts for charity that you're making at home. PLEASE check

the sizes our community partners request. We received some very lovely 24”

square pieces, but that is just way too small for even an infant. We all want to

make useful items for others, I know, just be aware of necessary dimensions when

planning a donation. We thank you so much for that consideration.

Fall brings visions of colorful falling leaves, cooler weather, and memories of turkey

dinners and family gatherings. Because not everyone can enjoy such blessings, we

are proud to continue to make donations to SAFEHOME and its residents.

The September plea for a ‘Check Shower’ proved to be more generous than we could

have ever envisioned! As checks trickled in during the month of September, we

watched the total grow from $25 to a final total of $1265.00, which was presented by

Barb Frans to Safehome’s Volunteer Coordinator, Hannah Brockway,

Friday, October 9, 2020.

We have specified that $1000 be used for transitional housing and $250 for court

ordered protection expenses – two vital services especially now. Safehome is

currently at a max of 10-15 families due to Covid virus restrictions instead of its usual

60 bed capacity. They need to help settle clients as soon as possible to allow more

room availability at the facility.

Hannah explained that a Protection from Abuse Order (PFA) is difficult to obtain. First

and foremost, it is a courageous and emotional decision the resident alone must

make, knowing that it requires a courtroom appearance with the abuser. Safehome

offers the PFA option and then provides advocates who walk with them through the

court process.

machines to be pieced, quilted, or have binding applied. Keep up the good work! The

Charity gals are especially happy to have those quilts come and go out of the

workshop storage room.

2020 Quilt Challenge

Are you working on, or planning to work on, a sampler quilt for

this year’s December meeting challenge? The deadline has been moved up one week (yikes!) to November 24. Due to our meeting

being held online, I’ll need to have two to three photos of your quilt

emailed to me by November 24 to prepare them to be shown online

at the December meeting. To participate, make a quilt which has at

least six distinct blocks and hasn’t been shown as a finished project

at a BVQG meeting or show. Membership will vote online, and prizes

will be awarded to the top three quilts, plus a special drawing for all

participants. Your finished quilt can be traditional, modern or art…

there is no limit to your creativity. — Stephanie Dodson
