Jewish Music Month CelebrationWe are reviving our tradition of celebrating Jewish music month be-tween Purim and Pesach. Jewish music may have certain charac-teristics-melodic nuances, rhythmic patterns, and semiticinstrumental timbres. It expresses certain ethnicity; one does nothave to be Jewish to compose Jewish music. Jewish music can beliturgical, folk, or ethnic flavored music in classical forms. Who canresist stomping feet to a Klezmer band? Who can resist clappinghands to a lively hora? We are going to present a variety of Jewishmusical experiences during this month and we hope you will cele-brate with us.

Lenny Krayzelburg Swim AcademyThe Lillian Schwartz Summer Day Camp is proud to be using the Lenny KrayzelburgSwim Academy for the third summer in a row. Lenny Krayzelburg is a four timeOlympic Gold Medalist who has taught water safety to thousands of children. Hismethod focuses on providing campers with confidence and safety in and out of thewater in addition to mastering new skills.Mr. Krayzelburg explained in an interview that the system he developed “is me-

thodical and detailed”. Children are taught proper body position and how “to givereach”. As a result children “reach a comfort level” and have a sense of “selfsafety”.

The lifeguards at theJCC Summer Camp aretrained and experiencedin dealing with children. Most of the lifeguardsreturn summer after summer, developing bonds with returning campers.Vanissa Piselli is the HKC Campgrounds Aquatics Director in charge of the in-structors and scheduling. Ms. Piselli says that the Krayzelburg Swim Academymethodology has proven to be the most effective in her experience. “We have re-ceived the most positive feedback from parents and children since we’ve had thisprogram in place.” The lifeguards are highly trained, caring and love working withkids”.The Krayzelburg Swim Academy teaches hundreds of children year round in dif-

ferent locations throughout the country. Lenny says his prime motivation is,“teaching kids for life. They’ll enjoy a healthier lifestyle, learn how to meet chal-lenges, persevere and gain a sense of accomplishment.” What will your kids being doing this summer?

R.O.M.E.O.S It started with a milestone birthday lunch for octogenarian ArthurPasenkoff. Then it was another friend’s birthday the month after andbefore you knew it we had 15 gold members gathering for lunch postworkout. During the last three years since this outing began, this groupdeveloped a special camaraderie where everybody genuinely caresabout each other. It was at one of their monthly lunches that they de-cided to create a name for their elite group and ROMEOS was born. The acronym stands for Retired Old Men Eating Out and their dailypresence in the Fitness Center makes the atmosphere feel special forall members, not just their group. We even write the date of the nextROMEO lunch on the hallway calendar in case another member wouldlike to join in, but they have to get the stamp of approval from the ring-leader and Fitness Committee chairperson Richie Hessman (he sayswith a chuckle).

Carol’s CornerHello and I guess by now everyone is aware that I’m back to my re-sponsibilities at the Avis/South Shore as the group fitness coordinatorand instructor. I look forward to continue working with our wonderfulfitness team to help all members maintain an active and healthylifestyle.

• Come to class with a good attitude, enjoy your workout with 100% effort and leave feeling a sense of accomplishment.• Be prepared-always wear proper footwear to protect against injuries during your workout, bring along your water, a towel and of course that positive attitude!

• Be serious about your workout-remember you are here to get the best results for yourself.

• Socializing is welcome as you make many friends in group fitness that support and push each other during class for higher achievements. But please be considerate during classes as there is plenty of time for socialization after class.

So grab your sneakers, water bottles and towels, pick up a schedule ofour menu of classes and LET’S GET FIT. For more info please call718.475.5270 ext 1205

Fitness Center UpdatesWe value the suggestions that the members make to the fitness de-partment whether it be through a note left in the suggestion box, anemail to Melissa or a tip shared with our staff that is shared at our staffmeetings. Member Spotlight: Donna Dawson age 43Donna has been a gold member of the JCCand a prominent fitness buff since the dayshe enrolled four years ago. She joinedwhen her husband Bill retired and shethought it was an activity they can enjoydoing together. She was right. Both staffand members enjoy their daily presence asthey are the fittest couple we know. Her daily exercise routine is as grueling

as it looks: one hour on the elliptical, 30minutes on the treadmill and one pumpclass a week. She has a healthy dietconsisting of lean meats and salads and onholidays her husband deep fries turkeys for a special treat for this fitfamily of four.

She continues to renew her membership because she loves thefriendly atmosphere and the staff is welcoming and helpful. Her fond-est memory was the feature the SI Advance did on her and Bill duringValentine’s Day profiling couples that work out together at the JCC.She and Bill have been married 25 years.
