Next Sunday, I will begin a message series in the Bible’s book of Galatians. In it, we’ll discover why the Gospel matters and how it brings freedom and forgiveness to life and relationships. I hope you’ll join me for this series that will offer real hope and encouragement for life’s journey.

GOD’S GRACE COMPELS SCOTTSDALE BIBLE

It has been an exciting season in the life of Scottsdale Bible Church! After celebrating 50 years of ministry in 2012, Pastor Jamie began the new year by unveiling a bold new plan for our next 50 years of ministry. A four-fold vision, “Compelled by Grace” includes a campus remodel, additional multisite campuses, new church planting partnerships, and expanded outreach in Western Europe and the Middle East.

Compelled by Grace was born out of concentrated prayer by our elder board. “Pastor Jamie showed us a documentary tracing the beginning of all revivals to concentrated, extraordinary prayer,” said Jeff Goble, chairman of the board of elders. “We realized we needed to ask God to help us have the same compassion for lost people that He does. We took a month to pray daily for revival—in our hearts first, and then for those who do not know Jesus Christ.”

At the same time, we began facing space issues on the Shea campus. Children’s Ministry, Club 56, and Special Ministries all started to run out of room. Children were turned away from classes due to lack of space. Solutions had to be found. A design was developed to make optimal use of our 18-acre Shea campus.

“We prayed diligently for God’s leading, and He gave us the direction we had been seeking,” said then chairman Kory Schuknecht. After seeking counsel and praying fervently, the elders agreed this was God’s plan for our future.

“We wanted our church family to understand the need to go forward with this plan,” said Pastor Jamie. “Christ’s love compels us… (2 Corinthian 5:14) to make room for more people to meet Jesus and grow in their faith. When we learned 87% of people in Scottsdale do not attend church, we knew we had to make space for more of them to come.”

As a church, we embarked on a spiritual journey in February and March. We read devotionals, met in small groups, and prayed together. Our purpose was to ask God what He would have each of us do in response to His vision. On March 10, the congregation responded heartily, bringing their three-year giving pledges during a time of worship and communion. It was an inspiring time as together we offered back to God what He has so graciously given to us.

Scottsdale Bible’s Vacation Bible eXperience is coming this June. We offer two weeks of dynamic teaching combined with lots of fun for kids. We hope you and your family will join us to encounter Jesus and the love He has for each of us—children and adults alike!

Our theme this year is Colossal Coaster World! Our campus will be transformed into an exciting adventureland where children will experience thrilling music and teaching, super-charged games, and fun crafts—all designed to communicate life-application lessons that showcase the Apostle Paul’s courageous walk with God.

As a young child, Robin Mason often experienced difficulty and sadness. Her father died when she was very

young and she didn’t know about God or faith. Growing up, she longed for a love she couldn’t define—one she hoped would fill her emptiness. When she was ten, a Christian neighbor invited her to attend Vacation Bible School (VBS). From that moment on, Robin’s life was significantly and forever changed.

Robin’s VBS teachers showed her a love she had never known. They openly expressed their care for her and shared God’s loving promises—something she had never heard before. On the second day of VBS, Robin received a postcard from the teachers inviting her to return and letting her know she was important to them and to God. She also received a special “Jesus Loves You” pencil. To this day, Robin keeps these precious mementos in a treasure box and considers them some of her most prized possessions.

Her experiences at VBS planted a hunger in her that would grow and deepen, even during turbulent teenage years when she became involved with a partying crowd. She continued to long for the love she felt as a child during VBS. Upon receiving her driver’s license, Robin drove to a church and asked what she could do to get closer to God. Though she didn’t find answers in the class they suggested, she never let go of her desire to form an intimate relationship with Jesus—she simply didn’t know how.

At age 20, Robin sought out a Bible study at a local church and for the first time, asked Jesus to enter her life and began a relationship with Him. Shortly after, she watched her brother’s marriage end and saw the impact it had on her three-year-old niece, Ashley. This was a loud awakening for Robin. She didn’t want the same uncertain childhood for Ashley as she had experienced. She wanted to give her an unshakable hope that would sustain her through life, and she knew the solution was to introduce Ashley to Christ through Vacation Bible School.

Robin brought Ashley to Scottsdale Bible’s Vacation Bible eXperience (VBX), but discovered high enrollment meant a new class leader was needed so more kids could attend. Without hesitation, Robin answered the call and has been teaching VBX at Scottsdale Bible ever since—for more than 20 years now! Ashley encountered God’s love at VBX too, and now, at age 23, joins Robin, her husband, Wes, and their children to teach each year.

“My passion for VBX comes from the love I received as a child during those weeks,” Robin proudly states. “As a family, we plan our vacations around VBX and would not miss this important opportunity to love children and demonstrate the love of Christ. I wish I could shout to the world the significance of VBX!” Robin will forever remember the impact this program has had on her life and the lives of her family members. She has made it her life’s mission to share the love and joy of Christ with children who are in desperate need of receiving it.

Where is the best place for students to develop their creativity and worship God at the same time?

AT THE 5TH ANNUAL SCOTTSDALE BIBLE SUMMER ARTS CAMP, JUNE 3-7! This camp offers an exciting opportunity for 4th–12th grade students to gain training in music, theater, dance and visual arts from talented Scottsdale Bible staff and volunteers. The lasting relationships formed at Summer Arts Camp have become foundational in the lives of many students at our church. Students gain valuable training, but more importantly, are inspired to worship God with their gifts and talents.

A dual program will be offered again this year, with morning and afternoon classes for multiple age groups. Creative Kidz is for students entering 4th through 6th grades. They will meet each morning, 9–11:30am, with track offerings in singing, art, dance, drama and stomp band. Their camp week will culminate with a showcase for parents on Friday at noon.

Student Arts Leadership Training (SALT) is for students entering 7th through 12th grades and meets in the afternoons, 1–3:30pm. SALT students choose from track options in vocals, band, art, dance, drama, technical arts, and photography. This year, we are also adding tracks in graphic design, costumes/sewing, and Garage Band.

Camp week for SALT culminates with our Night of Worship on Friday, June 7, at 7pm. At this event, families will enjoy student-led worship and a display of all of the students’ talents and creations crafted and honed throughout the week.

We believe the next generation of worship leaders and creative artists will be born out of these experiences our students enjoy in their younger years. Don’t miss

“When I attended SALT Summer Arts Camp, I had only been playing guitar for about five months and had never served at Scottsdale Bible. The band directors were really helpful and taught us the worship songs and how to play with other band instruments. By the end of the week, I was able to play my guitar in the Friday night worship service and then the next week for VBX. Now I play regularly in the Children’s Ministry Worship Band. This has helped me get closer to God by getting involved in ministry at Scottsdale Bible.

At ROYAL FAMILY KIDS’ CAMP (RFKC), these kids find the warmth and love of family and create powerful, positive memories. Our ratio of staff to campers is high to ensure success and safety, meaning we need many volunteers who love Jesus and kids! Training is provided and there is no cost to attend.

A bride and groom stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon, with the sun slowly setting and long shadows cast over

the guests in the white folding chairs. As the minister pronounced them husband and wife, the couple noticed an aisle runner leading to the edge of the cliff. The pastor pointed toward the crowd saying, “That direction is your past.” Then handing the couple two blindfolds, he pointed to the far side of the canyon. “That direction is your future—the other side awaits.”

Marriage is a blind leap. We say “I do” and then hold tight to the other person’s hand as we step into the unknown. Derek and Kelli Wert took that leap in their marriage and continue to do so in their faith. They’ve

made a habit of seeking God’s plan and purpose for their life, even when they weren’t sure where the next step would lead.

One of their first leaps involved leaving their Arizona home for Portland, Oregon to help start a new church with less then 20 people. They jumped in, assuming multiple volunteer roles, while Kelli worked a full-time job and Derek cared for their three children. With no extended family support, they recall it as a lonely time, but a time that helped them come together as a family. Money was tight, but they embraced a simpler way of life and learned contentment.

With their busy schedules, however, they found themselves communicating

strictly on an informational level. “How are the kids?” “What does the schedule look like this week?” They focused on the pressing needs of the moment, while the “uncomfortable stuff” that causes underlying tension and conflict was easier to bury. They didn’t have the energy to discuss troubled feelings about their family responsibilities or finances.

“We went to church—we loved church, we loved serving—but we weren’t living with God as the center of our marriage or family,” said Kelli. “We were going through the motions.” Gradually, they recognized what was missing. They realized they were pouring themselves out, but no one was pouring into them or they into each other. Derek sought out a group

of guys who modeled family leadership and gave him tools to help his marriage and relationship with Jesus.

Then God led them to take another leap, back to Arizona, where Derek accepted a new job. They visited a few churches, including Scottsdale Bible. “It was so very big!” they remembered thinking. “But each time we visited, we were drawn to the children’s program, the wealth of resources, and specifically, the marriage ministry.” They were encouraged to take a “Marriage Proactive” relationship assessment. From it, they learned how much they avoided communication. “Surprisingly, we scored low on communication, but high on conflict resolution,” said Kelli. “We discovered if we could talk about conflict, we were willing to do the work to resolve it.”

“I think things have gotten a lot better in our marriage” said Derek. “When we first got married, there was little to no communication and it was hard to discuss money and issues like that. It was very uncomfortable.”

“We just ignored issues and didn’t bring them up,” added Kelli, “because we didn’t know how to talk about them and didn’t want to stress each other out. If we did bring up an issue, one of us would get defensive about how the other person was feeling. It was all about blame and pointing fingers. We could never get past that point to actually hear what the other person was saying.” Now Derek and Kelli are working on changing those patterns.

When the couple first came to Scottsdale Bible, Derek was reluctant

to get involved in the marriage ministry. He wasn’t sure why they needed to fix something that “wasn’t broken.” But after diving in, discovering the areas they needed to address, and joining a small group of couples, they were amazed at the growth in their marriage. The deep canyons seemed smaller because Christ was changing their perspective.

The Werts continue their faith journey and now serve with the Cactus Campus Marriage Ministry. As they make progress in reconnecting with each other, they continue to step out in faith, knowing God is faithful to carry them to the other side.

Kate Accola’s story is a lot like many of ours. She grew up in a religious home, lived a moral life, and was taught to believe in God—but she had never met Jesus in a personal

way. When life got overwhelming, her faith suffered and she began to obsess over self-image, success in athletics, and popularity.

Words of affirmation from others no longer filled her spiritual void, and Kate was left wanting more. “Little did I know I had made the most dangerous mistake of all—I had separated myself from God,” recalls Kate.

Tragedy struck when her father was diagnosed with brain cancer and the friends she once counted on abandoned her. She felt completely hopeless and alone.

A friend invited Kate to attend the Venue at Scottsdale Bible in summer 2012. Right away, she could tell something was refreshingly different about the church. She experienced a sense of community, unconditional acceptance, and God’s grace in a way she never had.

Though she enjoyed attending worship services, Kate still had a difficult time forgiving herself of her past and she struggled with guilt and shame. Finally, God’s grace invaded Kate’s heart and she realized He extended forgiveness even when she couldn’t forgive herself.

“I will forever remember my early Sunday morning jog this past July. It had rained the night before and all was still. The cool breeze was against my face and the sun glistened behind Pinnacle Peak. Listening to my favorite melody “Hosanna,” I gazed in awe at the soft pink and purple colors of the sky. It was then that I knelt to the moist desert floor and began to weep with tears of joy. I accepted Christ into my life and immediately felt a spiritual renewal in my heart.”

Since giving her life to God that day, Kate has been actively involved at Scottsdale Bible. She found a mentor, a close-knit community of friends, and is growing in her walk with Christ. She even publicly declared her faith and was baptized last October.

Harry Walmsley is an avid balloon twister. He can take a balloon, fill it with air, and with a few strategic twists, hand you a work of art. Give

him two balloons and he can quickly twist them into a sculpture of a bear holding a heart.

In balloon twisting, sometimes balloons pop. The twister has little choice but to discard the burst balloon and start over with a new one. Three years ago, Harry’s life looked deflated, much like a hopelessly ruptured balloon.

“I made a series of choices that put my marriage and relationships with my children in crisis,” Harry said. “I wasn’t handling my life well. I was putting my job at risk as I became overwhelmed by the consequences of my choices.”

Harry never intended to be at this point after 25 years of marriage to Joan. “As a child, I was taught it was important to go to church every Sunday,” he said. “I was taught the formality and obligation of it, and I continued attending into adulthood.” When he met Joan, they continued these same religious observances.

“I converted and was baptized,” Joan said, “and we brought our kids to church every week.” Harry and Joan are parents to Kim, 26, and twin sons, Jim and Wil, 23. After the twins entered college, Harry and Joan’s marriage nearly collapsed.

“When Joan learned of what I had done, she sought legal separation,” Harry said. “I didn’t want that, so I knew I needed a change.” His sister, Jannette McDonald, invited Harry to Scottsdale Bible to hear his brother-in-law Jim sing in the choir.“When I heard Pastor Jamie preach, it was like nothing I had ever heard in church,” Harry said. “He explained the Bible. He gave opposing views. He offered biblical answers. I had never heard that in all my years of going to church, week in and week out.” Motivated by this new experience, Harry wanted more.

“I went to Scottsdale Bible’s website and saw the men’s ministry. I attended the Tuesday night class and found

a place where men were being transparent about their lives. They shared the Bible passages showing God would rather you work on your marriage than just divorce. I had never seen Scriptures that spoke to these matters,” he said.

With a new perspective, Harry had fresh hope and a new resolve. “I had to find answers for myself,” he said. “My son Wil had been active in Young Life as a student. He told me to turn to the Lord and pointed me to the book of John because he said it wonderfully shows God’s love. God used this to open my eyes and show me how loving and almighty He is, and how He wants us to be.”

God was also working in Joan. “I was crushed by what had happened,” she said. “I was considering a divorce, but I determined to start with a time of separation and I asked God to reveal Himself to Harry in a new way.” Joan left to take a job in Portland, but Harry called and texted daily. At one point, a Scottsdale Bible friend generously gave him an airline voucher to visit her.

“While we were apart, God opened my eyes about becoming the spiritual leader of my family. I read everything I could get my hands on. I went to the men’s retreat, the Foundations classes, and then Men’s Fraternity. I joined an

accountability group and asked for and received a mentor who I’ve been meeting with once a week,” Harry said.

When Joan returned to Phoenix, Harry’s mentor encouraged them to deal with their past as God healed their relationship. “Joan started attending women’s ministry and my mentor’s wife began investing in her and enlightening her about Jesus,” Harry said. “As she saw God working in me, Joan began asking me more about the Lord, and I shared what I was learning.

“I realize the choices I made in all areas of my life were an outgrowth of not having a relationship with God. I turned all of my messes over to Jesus and He is rebuilding everything,” Harry said. “God has brought me close to my kids, and now Joan and I are walking hand-in-hand like never before.” Baptized in 2012, Harry said, “I wanted to announce to the world that Jesus is my Lord and Savior, and I’m giving my all for Him.”

Today, Joan is active in women’s ministry and serves on staff in Scottsdale Bible’s Special Ministries. Harry can be found in men’s ministry and other weekly growth opportunities. “Best of all,” Harry said, “we’re working on our marriage. We take part in a couples’ Bible study on Fridays, and every Saturday, I set aside time just for Joan.”

Harry and Joan are humbled that God didn’t discard the deflated remnants of their past, and instead brought them new life together in Christ to build a beautiful sculpture of His love.


“Three years ago, I attended a class at Scottsdale Bible to help me discover my gifts and passions. The results led me to investigate the Burmese Refugee Ministry. A swift, friendly reply from Scottsdale Bible’s Local Outreach team encouraged me to continue on this unknown and slightly uncomfortable path.

Since then, I’ve been introduced to a culturally different group of people whom I have learned to admire, love and respect. The Burmese Refugee Ministry strives to reflect Christ’s love and care to a group of people who have been pushed from their place of birth and deposited here in Phoenix, in need of our help. Each volunteer on this team shows extraordinary generosity and unwavering love as they care for these wonderful people.

While volunteering, I’ve also learned about and become an admirer of MentorKids USA and their awe-inspiring efforts for Phoenix-area youth. They have established a Refugee Hope Promise Neighborhood that wraps its arms around kids by finding committed Christian mentors to walk alongside and encourage them.

I was matched with ten-year-old Zar Ni Oo and it has proved to be a God-inspired choice. Our relationship has grown with each day we spend together. From helping with homework, to having the pleasure of watching Zar Ni climb onto a horse for the first time, and seeing her sit across from my children at our Thanksgiving table—mentoring continues to be a commitment well worth the time and effort.

I’ve discovered that being a mentor is more than the things we do; it’s the time we spend together. Even enjoying quiet car rides gives us the occasion to speak from the heart and share our lives with one another. God put this mentoring relationship in my path, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity.”
