In the twinkling of an eye, the second term came and whizzed by. It was yet another eventful term for the school, one that was peppered with many exciting activities and programmes ranging from the annual Sports Day and Cross-Country, the leadership training camps for the different groups and cohorts of pupils,

educational trip to new Zealand26 pupils from sec 1 to sec 3 together with Mrs selina lum, Mrs Judy Wong and Ms Hazelin embarked on an educational trip to New Zealand from 23-31 May. The pupils benefited from their interaction with an environmental scientist even as he guided them through activites such as beach profiling at Mt Maunganui, river and landforms studies at Mclaren Falls Park and volcanic studies at the Whakarewarewa geothermal reserve. they had the opportunity to look at geographical features such as the plunge pools, geysers and tombolos.they learned about innovative practices employed in the production process of the kiwi fruit. they also did their part in conserving the environment by planting native trees such as the flax and manuka trees.at the school immersion programme at aquinas College, our pupils were paired with pupils from aquinas even as they attended lessons there. in return, our pupils organised an exhibition highlighting the Malay, Chinese and indian cultures, traditional games and attractions in singapore. they also immersed themselves in the Maori culture as they spent one night in a marae (community hall). they ate food the Maoris love, learned how to weave flax and even had a go at the traditional dances of their hosts! the 3-day trip from 28-30 May allowed our pupils to experience the Malay kampong lifestyle and to learn about Malay culture and traditional handicrafts. We stayed at the homes of our host families and had the chance to converse in the Malay language.

We enjoyed playing traditional games such as congkak and ‘coconut bowling’ and trying our hand at handicrafts such as basket weaving. We also had a chance to experience kampong fishing, visit a goat farm and cook traditional dishes. We experimented with the traditional musical instruments of the Minangkabau such as the gong and rebana and had a go at the traditional dance.

On the second night, all of us wore traditional costumes to attend a mock wedding ceremony and to perform a dance and music item. it was certainly an enriching experience.

Youth Delegation trip to MalaccaFrom 18-21 May, i went on a Youth Delegation trip to Malacca with 13 other youths from various schools in singapore. this trip was truly an eye-opener and i had the opportunity to soak up the culture of Malacca. When we were there, we had the honour of meeting two ministers of Malaysia – Datuk idris Haron who is the Deputy Minister of Higher education and Datuk seri Mohd ali rustam who is the Chief Minister of Malacca. We also visited the World assembly of Youths (WaY) and st. Francis institution (sFi). at WaY, we discussed problems youths around the world face, such as cyberspace addiction. at sFi, a prestigious boys’ school in Malacca, we were given a tour around the campus.

this year’s sec 1 'i-Discover' camp was held from 16 – 18 May. the theme of the camp was F.u.n. - Friendship, unity and new mindsets. the camp aimed to help sec 1 pupils discover their leadership potential and forge new friendships. each day focused on one aspect of the theme of the camp. the camp included a day of games at sentosa. as for the sec 3 camp committee, they took home valuable organisational experiences and walked away with new friendships.

'We conquer'- a most fitting theme for the Sec 2 camp held at Jalan Bahtera on 23-25 June. the girls roughed it out and took part in activities like abseiling, tackling the high ropes, rockwall, zip line and kayaking. they also got their creative juices going preparing for their presentation during campfire. It was a precious time for the girls to learn more about themselves, conquer their fears and bond with girls from the various classes.
