PTK Hosts Spring Induction
Lone Star College-Tomball’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) inducted 35 new members on March 20 in the Beckendorf Conference Center. PTK recog-nizes the academic achievements of two-year college students and promotes scholarship opportunities. It is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 2 million members and 1,200 chapters worldwide. Students who are invited to join must have and maintain a 3.5 grade-point-
average.
Under the advising of English professor Dr. Bo Rol-lins, Alpha Rho Mu, the LSC-Tomball PTK chap-ter, has received numerous honors this semester. Thus far in 2012, the chapter has been awarded the following distinctions: Texas Top Chapter; Dis-tinguished Honors in Action Project – Education; Advisor Award – Outstanding Service to the Texas Region; the Five-Star Chapter Award; the Pinnacle Award; and the Chapter of Service Designee. In addition, Alpha Rho Mu President Marilyn Comer was elected PTK Texas Regional President, and she was selected for the Texas Hall of Honor for Outstanding Members.

Hispanic Forum
LSC-Tomball continues to support Hispanic outreach initiatives through sponsorships of various events. The college provided t-shirts to Waller High School students to wear at the Houston Hispanic Forum on Saturday, February 25. Approximately 92 students wore their LSC-Tomball t-shirts as they walked the floors of the George R. Brown Convention Center, where they learned about education, career planning and financial aid for college. LSC-Tomball sincerely thanks Waller ISD Bi-lingual Director Jorge Alvarado for coordinating this effort with Dr. Irene C. Gutierrez Briggs of the Recruiting, Outreach and Diversity Initiatives Office.
Gulf Coast Intercollegiate Conference Choral Festival
The Gulf Coast Intercollegiate Conference Choral Festival was held on March 23 in the Performing Arts Center. Gwendolyn Guthrie
Gwendolyn Guthrie will be the first to admit that college is not al-ways easy. However, she will also be quick to add that perseverance will overcome frustrating times. Her appearance on the President’s List each semester she has attended LSC-Tomball might indicate that she knows what she is talking about.
Guthrie, a 21-year-old resident of Plantersville, followed her eldest sister and brother to LSC-Tomball. She began taking classes in January 2010, studying the diverse subjects of dance and business. Her inten-tion is to earn her associates degree and then, perhaps, to transfer to Sam Houston State University.
In Guthrie’s mind, higher educa-tion allows students the opportu-nity to gain experience in all facets of life. To that end, she works part time in the Financial Aid office in addition to taking classes. When asked what advice she might give to college-bound students, she says, “Don’t give up. Everyone reaches a wall. It’s the heroes who break through it.”
Doug Boyd Receives Grant
English professor Doug Boyd has received a grant from the Tex-as Bluebird Society to install bluebird nest boxes on the LSC-Tomball campus. The grant includes five nest boxes and funds to buy materials such as poles and hardware. The installation of the bluebird nest boxes is another addition to the college’s envi-ronmental and beautification efforts. The grant requires that the
boxes be monitored for a year through Cornell University’s NestWatch.
Faculty Spotlight
Mark Hammerbacher
Mark Hammerbacher has been teaching most of his life. Even when he was in ju-nior high, he tutored his sister – and she was in high school! He has been teaching at LSC-Tomball for the past five years. His classes include developmental math, college algebra, trigonometry, pre-calculus, elements of calculus, and calculus. Hammerbacher can also be found tutoring in the Math Center twice a week.
Richard Huerta
Police Officer Richard Huerta has been with the Lone Star College System for 9 years. Prior to joining our college po-lice force, he retired from the Houston Fire Department where he worked as a firefighter and EMT for 24 years. Ad-ditionally, he worked for 10 years as a campus police officer at Houston Baptist University. Officer Huerta has been a certified CPR instructor with the American Heart Associa-tion for 15 years and hosts the CPR certification classes when they are held on campus. Huerta’s primary duties on the LSC-Tomball police force include pa-trolling the campus and investigating incidents. He is bilingual and finds that his language skills often come in handy in his daily routine. Interacting with the fac-ulty, staff and students are what he enjoys most about his job. Outside of work, Officer Huerta is an avid deer, quail and dove hunter.

Buddy Wiggin
Melvin “Buddy” Wiggin, the LSC-Tomball manager of facili-ties and plant operations, has been in his current position since June 2006. He manages the maintenance of buildings and grounds on campus. “I oversee everything from the landscape outside to the air conditioning inside,” he explains. “My main goal is to ensure a safe, comfortable educational environment for our faculty, staff and students.” Previously, Wiggin worked
at Loyola University New Orleans for over twenty years. “I love that LSC-Tom-ball is small and tight-knit compared to Loyola. I also appreciate the fact that the community still has a hometown feel. You get the opportunity to know and work with everyone.” When Wiggin is not at work, one of his pastimes is cooking on a large scale. “When I lived in Louisiana that meant lots of Cajun food. Now that I’ve moved to Texas, of course it means barbeque!”

In addition to teaching, he serves as the faculty advisor to the Math Club and is co-chair of the Lone Star College In-vitational Math Bowl, a competition for area high school students. He also serves, as needed, on various LSCS com-mittees, which have included Achieving the Dream, Strate-gic Planning, and Foundations of Excellence.
Hammerbacher loves teaching because he knows that education gives people op-tions. He says, “Education helps people make sound choices - both in the direc-tion of their own lives, as well as in the direction of the country and the world.”

Educational Partnership Council
On March 8, the Lone Star College-Tomball Educational Partnership Council (EPC) met for the first time. Community leaders in attendance were: John Neu-bauer, Superintendent, Tomball ISD; Ken Odom, Analyst, Hewlett-Packard; Anita Hebert, Executive Director of Curriculum, Magnolia ISD; and Bruce Hil-legeist, President, Tomball Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Susan Karr, Dr. Lee Ann Nutt, Ann Johnson, and Dr. Lisa Morales presented data identifying key indica-tors of student educational experiences from early childhood through college and examined educational trends leading to 21st century best practices. The group acknowledged that the field of education is undergoing rapid change, re-sulting in a real need for increased support throughout the various levels of the educational system. Further, each member saw value in a comprehensive review of student success issues from preschool to college completion. The meeting cul-minated with a discussion of specific ways to foster collaboration across teaching disciplines and grade levels in order to explore mutual goals related to college readiness. The Educational Partnership Council aspires to be an active leader in the creation of a culture of learning and citizenship in the larger community.

Office of Technology Services HostsTechnology Open Forum
Associate Vice Chancellor for Technology Services Link Alander led an interac-tive open forum on March 8 for LSC-Tomball faculty, staff, and students. Al-ander and his staff gave updates on the various projects the Office of Technol-ogy Services (OTS) is currently overseeing. Alander revealed a marked increase in customer satisfaction with the LSCS Service Desk since its operations were brought in-house last year. He also explained that a LSCS Learning Management System (LMS) Committee has been established to identify and recommend a new LMS by the end of the year.
Executive Director of OTS Client Relations Marian Burkhart discussed the dan-gers of phishing and announced that OTS would soon develop its own strategic plan. Associate Vice Chancellor of Technology Services Mario Berry discussed the drop in iStar help-desk requests and commented on iStar’s three-year anni-versary this semester. Director of Network Services Sherry Watson updated the audience on the System’s use of WebEx as well as a scheduled voice-over IP up-grade. Executive Director of Campus Technology Services Butch Juelg discussed plans to institute Thin Client Computing, a system that allows constituents to maintain a virtual desktop available when they log into any networked computer in the System.
