Line Dance Classes A Line Dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one or more lines or rows without regard for the gender of the individuals, all facing either each other, contra, or in the same direction and executing steps at the same time. Unlike circle dancing, line dancers are not in physical contact with each other.

Line dancing is practiced and learned in country-western dance bars, social clubs, dance clubs, ballrooms and classes, such as The Towers line dance class.

Line dances have accompanied many music styles since the early 1970s including pop, swing, rock and roll, disco, rhythm and blues, jazz, cha-cha, rhumba and waltz.

Join The Towers Line Dance class! This class is a good way to exercise not only the body, but the mind as well! This class meets every Monday at 2:30 PM in the Mimosa Room and is led by Towers Resident Fran Lineweaver. No experience is necessary and everyone is welcome to join the

The Towers Literary Club (TLC) The Meeting Report

Tuesday, February 7th

The February meeting of The Towers Literary Club was attended by 15 members at The Club to review The Train to Crystal City by a San Antonio author Jan Jarboe Russell. A Texan and educated at UT in Austin in Journalism and Literature, Mr. Russell is an award-winning journalist and short story writer. In 1999, The Washington Post named Lady Bird: A Biography of Mrs. Johnson one of his best books of the year. After almost forty years of contemplation and research, Jan Jarboe Russell finally published this shocking book, which revealed the well-kept secret of the Second World War’s detention camp at the southern tip of Texas. The Club members expressed their dismay as well as ignorance regarding the existence of the camp. “I was practicing in a small town twenty miles from Crystal City and didn't know any-thing about this detention camp,” Dr. Arthur Allison said. The majority of Towers Literacy Club members have expressed the same reaction. The last twenty minutes of the meeting was dedicated to the open mic in which several members read short pieces. We missed those who were unable to attend this informative literary meeting. The Schedule and the Books of the Incoming Meetings:

1. The March meeting is on Tuesday, March 7th; the book, The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George.

2. The April Meeting is on Tuesday, April 4th; the book, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress: A Novel by Dai Sijie.

3. The May meeting is on Tuesday, May 1st. Several members have volunteered to email me a proposed book for the May and June meetings. We welcome your proposal regarding the future selections, preferably any well-regarded novel.

Ballroom Dance Lessons

Tom and Betty are teaching the Waltz in March and April. The March classes are from 2:30 to 3:30 PM on Thursday, March 9th, and Thursday, March 23rd. Please note, this is different from

the regular schedule. All classes are in the Mimosa Room. The waltz is the second most popular dance after the foxtrot/two-step. One of the earliest references to the waltz is a 1580 writing of French philosopher Montaigne who wrote that the dancers in Augsburg held each other so closely that their faces touched (how shocking)! The peasants of Bavaria began dancing a dance called Walzer around 1750 and in 1786 the ladies of Vienna were particularly celebrated for their grace and movements while waltzing. No event ever produced so great a sensation in English society as the introduction of the waltz in 1813, although the Oxford Dictionary considered it “riotous and indecent” as late as 1825. My how times have changed! As always, the lessons are free. Bring a partner and learn to waltz. Come if you just want to watch or listen to the music. See you then.

Schilo’s Delicatessen, located in the heart of downtown San Antonio, has been serving authentic German cuisine since 1917. In fact, Schilo’s is one of the oldest continually operated restaurants in the state of Texas! Housed in an old mercantile exchange building dating back to the 1800’s, Schilo’s embodies a time in San Antonio when the majority of the citizens were of German decent. The exchange’s vault is now their walk-in refrigerator. Old signage, postcards and tile floor continue the German theme throughout the deli. Schilo’s is known worldwide for their famous homemade root beer, split pea soup, Reuben sandwiches and hot mustard. Residents will visit Schilo’s on Tuesday, March 14th, for an early lunch. The Firebird Ballet catapulted the 28-year-old Stravinsky into international fame in 1910. Stravinsky blended Russian folk traditions and brilliant orchestral colors with his unique style of rhythmic irregularity. The first half of the concert features Bartók’s first violin concerto, written two years before The Firebird. The work wasn’t performed until after his death. It was inspired by an infatuation he had for a younger woman. Bartók wrote that the first movement was “idealized Stefi Geyer, celestial and inward,” the second a character that was “cheerful, witty, amusing.” The concert begins with Khachaturian’s incidental music for a play that is best known for its waltz theme. Keep It Simple

Keep my life simple Uncluttered and free. Let there be silence For contemplation and me. Surround me with space And clean, open air. There must be a place Aside from worry and care. GUEST SPEAKER PROGRAM PRESENTS RED MCCOMBS “TRUMP-GOOD OR BAD?” AND “IS NOW THE TIME TO BUY OR SELL”

There is certainly a great difference of opinion on the topics of the presentation, but there is no dispute about the qualifications of Red McCombs our speaker. A very brief review of his background:

Education: Southwestern University, University of Texas School of Business, and Law School.

Business: Red McCombs Automotive, McCombs Energy, Real estate development and sales. Clear Channel Communications (with partner Lowry Mays.)

Professional sports: Previously owned NBA Denver Nuggets, NFL Minnesota Vikings, San Antonio Spurs.

Leadership roles: In numerous national, state, and local organizations including chairmanship of University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, awarded Distinguished Alumnus award by University of Texas and had its nationally-acclaimed business school renamed The Red McCombs School of Business. Many more awards and honors have been awarded to him which are not included in this look at the prolific and successful accomplishments of our guest speaker.

As we consider the questions posed in the title to his talk, and look for an enlightened discussion, who best to do this but Red McCombs.

Join me in welcoming Red McCombs on Tuesday, March 21st, at 10:00AM in the Mimosa Room. Hope to see you there.

Culinary Corner

Join fellow Residents in the Ped Mall for a Culinary Demo with a Towers Chef on Tuesday, March 21st, at 3:00 PM. The dishes that are demonstrated are often a preview for a new item set to be featured in the Gardenia dining room, and you get to be the one to take it for a taste test! No sign up needed, just come down and see what’s cookin’!

For one bustling Manhattan apartment building, the real day starts after the folks on two legs leave for work and school. That’s when the pets of every stripe, fur and feather begin their own nine-to-five routine: hanging out with each other, trading humiliating stories

about their owners, or auditioning adorable looks to get better snacks. The building’s top dog, Max, a quick-witted terrier rescue who’s convinced he sits at the center of his owner’s universe, finds his pampered life rocked when she brings home Duke, a sloppy, massive mess of a mongrel with zero interpersonal skills. When this reluctant canine duo finds themselves out on the mean streets of New York, they have to set aside their differences and unite against a fluffy-yet-cunning bunny named Snowball, who’s building an army of Ex-Pets abandoned by their owners and out to turn the tables on humanity…all before dinnertime. Residents will view The Secret Life of Pets, on Thursday, March 23rd, in the Club. Lunch is Chef’s choice to include dessert and choice of tea or water. The cost is $6.00 per person and is served at 11:45 AM. The movie starts promptly at 12:00 PM. Residents are welcome to bring lunch from home or the deli. Be sure to sign up with Veronica or the Front Desk no later than Friday, March 17th, even if you do not plan to order a lunch. Remember...for all in-house events where lunch is ordered you must cancel with a 48-hour advance notice.

SA Symphony Presents: From Piano duo to Cinderella

The ballet Cinderella is one of Prokofiev’s most popular and melodious compositions, and has inspired a great many choreographers. The composer wrote, “What I wished to express above all in the music of Cinderella was the poetic love of Cinderella and the Prince, the birth and flowering of that love, the obstacles in its path, and finally the dream fulfilled.” The concert begins with Dukas’ symphonic poem The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. It is now best known as part of Walt Disney’s Fantasia featuring Mickey Mouse, but it was originally

inspired by a poem by Goethe. Also featured is the most famous concerto for two pianos by the French composer Poulenc, performed by a dynamic twin-sister duo. Residents will attend From Piano duo to Cinderella at The Tobin on Friday, March 24th. Tickets start at $15.00 and can be purchased by calling The Tobin Box Office at 223-8624. Once you have purchased your ticket, be sure to sign up with Veronica or the Front Desk for a transportation reservation. The bus will depart at 7:00 PM. Remember…to avoid a transportation charge you must cancel with a 48-hour advance notice.

SA Symphony

Presents:

The Unfinished

Symphony &

Mahler No. 4 Schubert and Mahler are masters of the symphony and the song. Mahler’s Fourth Symphony includes a song he wrote that conveys a child’s vision of heaven. The song appears in various fragments in the first three movements and is sung in its entirety in the last movement. The text ends, “The angelic voices gladden our senses, so that all awaken for joy.” Schubert’s Ave Maria is one of his most beloved melodies out of the over 600 songs he composed before his death at age 31. The “Unfinished” Symphony has been called the first romantic symphony with its emphasis on expressive melody. It remains a mystery why Schubert left it incomplete with only two movements. Residents will attend The Unfinished Symphony & Mahler No. 4 at The Tobin on Friday, March 31st.
