March Movie: UnforgivenKen Watanabe Exchanges Six-guns for a Samurai Sword in Japanese Remake of the Clint Eastwood Classic

Ken Watanabe (Inception) stars in director Lee Sang-il’s visionary remake of Clint Eastwood’s iconic Academy Award winner. Continuing a rich tradition of cross-cultural adaptations, Lee swaps six-shooters for samurai swords, transposing the classic western to Meiji-period Japan. The film was screened in the Special Presentation section at the 2013Toronto International Film Festival and was described by Artistic Director Cameron Bailey as follows:

"Jubei Kamata (Ken Watanabe) is a widowed father and infamous former swordsman who spends his days tending a struggling farm. His commitment to pastoral tranquility is tested when Kingo Baba (Akira Emoto), an old comrade in arms, brings news of a bounty substantial enough to secure his children's future: the prostitutes of a neighbouring village have pledged 1,000 yen for the lives of the bandits who mutilated one of their own. Rustily and somewhat reluctantly, Jubei joins Kingo in the saddle, along with a brash young braggart named Goro (Yûya Yagira). Together, they fancy themselves more than a match for the wanted men. But they are also destined to encounter a far more formidable faction, led by a sadistic lawman (Koichi Sato) with a distaste for soldiers of fortune.

Lee wisely retains the spine of David Webb Peoples's acclaimed screenplay, but adds several notable flourishes of his own.A subplot concerning Japan'sindigenous Ainu squares his update with the broader western tradition of depicting the plight of aboriginal peoples at the hands of so-called civilizing forces. Lee also refashionsthefilm'sclimacticstandofftostunningeffect,conceivingafierynewfinalethatiscertaintoseehisUnforgivenbecomeiconicinitsownright.”

We will also be joined that evening by Goro Koyama, internationally acclaimed foley artist whose most recent work, on Robert Redford’s All is Lost, is nominated for this year’s Academy Award for best sound. Goro helped create the sound effects for Unforgiven and will demonstrate for us some of his techniques for creating sound effects for a major international film. His other credits include The Help, 42, Elysium, Alice in Wonderland and American Hustle.

The screening will also be proceeded by the announcement of the Toronto Japanese Film Festival 2014 line-up.

Seeking Volunteers for JCCC Monthly Movie NightThe JCCC is currently seeking volunteers to help out regularly at our monthly movie night. Movie nights are usually scheduled on the last Thursday evening of each month (no movie in December), and we are looking for volunteers who are able to help with ticket sales, snack sales, and tidy up the theatre after screening. JCCC Annual BazaarThe JCCC Annual Bazaar committee is busy organizing our biggest one-day fundraiser of the year! So mark your calendar for Saturday May 3, 2014 from 12:00pm to 4:00pm. You won’t want to miss any of the bargains!! As usual, the Annual Bazaar is a shopping extravaganza with great deals on Noritake tableware, logoware, lawn accessories, gardening items, starter plants, baked goods, etc., plus lots of white/pink elephant treasures and of course our Silent Auction with some great products to bid on. There will also be lots of food for sale such as sushi, udon, tempura - for take home or dining in while you take a break from your shopping spree. Please come and support your JCCC! We welcome donations of all kinds – baked goods (including cakes, pies, cookies, squares, etc), Japanese food (including manju, sekihan, chirashi, bento, etc), white elephant, new products, etc. Non-perishable donations can be dropped off at the JCCC reception desk anytime after April 1st. Perishable donations that can be refrigerated can be accepted on May 2nd and of course on the 3rd. While we appreciate everyone’s generosity, we ask that you DO NOT donate clothing. Bazaar Volunteering OpportunitiesThe Annual Bazaar provides many opportunities for volunteers of all ages. From now until the day of Bazaar there is lots of work that goes into making this event a huge success. NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY to be a volunteer and there are jobs for young people who need high school volunteer hours as well as the “young at heart.” Time commitments can be tailored according to youravailability, from a few hours to a few days, whatever you are willing to commit to. New for 2014 - Manju BeeOn Sunday April 27, 2014,wewillbeintroducingthefirstBazaarManju Bee. This is an opportunity for people to help us make a few different types of manju (red bean cakes) to sell at our annual Bazaar. In the past, this date has traditionally been our Mochitsuki Day. While we appreciate the many years of support for this activity, we have found that demand for mochi has dwindled over the years. We hope that all our previous volunteers will still come out to join in and that we can entice some new volunteers as well. The day will run from about 10:00am to mid-afternoon. No experience is

necessary and we can use lots of volunteers on this day, so come with your family and friends!!!

Preparation DayPreparation day will be held on Friday May 2, 2014 from 9:30am to late afternoon. We will be using this day to set up the areas for our sales, to make the Inari sushi (from 12:30pm) and to do some light food preparation work.

Sushi BeeWe will be using the same approach to the preparation of sushi this year as we have the past few years. As we want to offer the best quality sushi as is possible, we will be rolling the sushi in the morning before the bazaar. We realize that this means an early start to a busy day, but we request that anyone available to help come to the JCCC on May 3 for 7:00am! Kamp Kodomo Summer SessionsMark your calendars and don’t miss out on the all the summer fun at the JCCC!!! Kamp Kodomo’s summer session is getting ready tostart registration. Joinusforabusyweekfilledwithsessionscovering a wide range of activities including martial arts, ikebana, origami, folklore, language, and so much more! The camp operates from 9:00am to 4:30pm from Monday to Friday. Sessions will run on July 7 – 11, July 14 – 18, and July 21 – 25. Fees for this program are $200 per child for a 5-day session. A 10 % discount will be applied for JCCC members and additional children from the same family will receive a 5% discount. If you register before April 30th, you get the early-bird pricing of just $180 per child! Extended camp care is available from 8:00am to 9:00am and from 4:30pm to 6:00pm with an additional cost of $35 per session. Camp fees cover all materials, two nutritious snacks per day, and a special activity each week. Campers are required to bring a lunch and drink. Registration begins Monday March 17 and the registration deadline is June 30, 2014. Kamp Kodomo’s maximum attendance is 20 children per session. Introduction to Bonsai ClassBonsai is the art of growing trees, or woody plants shaped as trees, in containers. In this course, students will learn the history, theory and practice of bonsai through informative lectures, multimedia presentations, demonstrations and hands on training. Topics will include the artistic principles of styling bonsai, sourcing and selecting raw material, pruning, wiring, watering and transplanting. At the end of the course, the students will have their very own beginner’s bonsai to enjoy and the knowledge to care for it.

Etegami – Picture Letter ClassAre you interested in drawing and watercolour painting but have never tried it before? Etegami (Picture Letter) is a perfect thing to try for someone like you! Previous art experience is not required. Etegami is a communication tool to send your feelings to someone for whom you care about. Why not make an original postcard? Family participation welcome! How to wear a YukataA yukata is a casual kimono worn in the summer. In this 3 session workshop, you’ll learn how to wear yukata including 2 styles of obi tying and practise basic skills such as walking and sitting while wearing yukata. You will have the opportunity to return in June, after the workshop has finished,forareunionsessiontoreviewand practise your yukata wearing skills, and learn some bon-odori leading up to JCCC’s Natsu Matsuri in July.

Spring & Summer Ukulele Class Ukulele is a Hawaiian instrument that has also gained much popularity in Japan. In this popular class, students will learn to play and sing lots of Hawaiian as well as Japanese and English folk songs. There are 2 classes running at the JCCC – high beginner and low beginner. Sakura Gala Rescheduled to November 22, 2014

The JCCC has rescheduled the Sixth Annual Sakura Gala to Saturday November 22, 2014. The rescheduling is to continueinthefinetraditionof a Black Tie Social on a Saturday night, while respecting the traditions of the Jewish Community and the Sabbath. This was a carefully considered decision that will ensure a very successful Gala and an enjoyable evening for all attendees.

The 2014 Sakura Gala posthumously honours the courageous Chiune Sugihara, the Japanese diplomat who served as Consul-General in Lithuania during World War II. During this time, he risked his career to issue visas to Jewish refugees so they could travel to Japan. In less than one month, he issued over 2,000 visas, resulting in his saving over 6,000 lives. The 2014 Sakura Gala will also honour the Jewish community in Toronto for its friendship and support of Japanese Canadians following the Japanese Canadian internment. Leaving Behind AnswersAlthough the brunt of this year’s harsh winter weather is hopefully past us, the loss of family, friends, and community

members in recent years as well as more recent months, brings to the forefront the place and role of leaving behind a record. If we leavebehindanswers,futuregenerationswillbeabletofindthatmuch more meaning behind the questions which will inevitably be posed.Andfindingameaningfulwaytorecordandpreserveyourmemories and history, can be an experience that also brings much laughter and creates wonderful new memories. Sedai would like to thank Mitsy Kuwahara for the contribution of her time and memories of her late father Shigeyuki “Shig”Yoshida, the warmly remembered Boy Scout Leader in Tashme. Shig Yoshida remained in the warm collective memory of several of Sedai’s interviewees, and through preserving his legacy, we hope to honour his contribution to the community. Also, as mentioned last month, the JCCC’s annual Sakura Gala would like to highlight and honour the countless Jewish Canadians who showed great humanity to many Japanese Canadians resettling east of the Rockies following WWII. To those who have already stepped forward with letters and phone calls, we give our thanks! This piece of Canadian history has gone largely unacknowledged – many Canadians in and outside of the Jewish Canadian population have little knowledge of this time period nor this historical gem of Canadian multicultural acceptance, and we hope to pay proper tribute to those who pushed aside racism during adifficultperiodoftime. And for those who may have anecdotes or recollections that could aide the JCCC and Sedai in better understanding the connections that were made between the Jewish Canadian and Japanese Canadian communities, we eagerly invite you to step forward and contact us. Save the Date!! Nostalgia Night is July 5, 2014Nostalgia Night is coming on Saturday July 5, 2014, and after last year’s sell-out success, you won’t want to miss this event! Nostalgia Night’s main focus is to recognize the work that various organizations within the Japanese Canadian community have contributed towards the cultural and social development and well-being of our community over the years. It has also become a great opportunity to catch up with friends and acquaintances, mingle with members of the clubs and organizations being honoured and - of course - enjoy great Japanese Canadian food!! This year’s Nostalgia Night honours four clubs - Bunka Shishu, Ikebana, Shodo, and Sumi-e - each of which have supported the development of Japanese cultural arts over the years. So mark the date on your calendar to join us for this wonderful celebratory event, and look for information in upcoming newsletters!!

Transformation Ochawan continues to March 31by John Ota

The edible part of the exhibition reception on Sunday afternoon, Feb 2 was ochazuke – green tea on steamed, white rice with a selection of colourful toppings: umeboshi, furukake, tidbits of nori and takuwan, and assorted tsukemono. Yum! The 71 ochawan on exhibit in the gallery boast a similar diversity of ingredients. Starting with blank, white

bowls, artists and non-artists (participants ranged from 5 to 88 years of age) used materials such as bamboo, brown sugar, indelible markers, finger-nail decals, photographs, alabaster,gummy worms, and raw rice to express beautiful thoughts, humour, and social concerns. There were bowls that had been cut in half, or broken and reconstructed (one was left in shards). Some were painted or written on. All were fancifully altered in appearance and meaning. Elegantly presented on wall shelves, display stands and a central banquet table, Transformation Ochawan is a glittering visual feast and well worth going back for second helpings. It’s a lot to digest. Many of the ochawan are for sale by silent auction which ends on the final day of the exhibition.Gallery hours are9:00am – 9:00pm daily. As spring nears, it’s time to note the date of the Hiroshima Kenjin Kai get-together. Whether you have Hiroshima connections or not, you are cordially invited to welcome spring early at our party on Saturday April 5, 2014, at the Toronto Buddhist Temple, 1011 Sheppard Ave. W., Toronto. The Bento is expected to cost $15 but is free to members over the age of 80. Membership is $5 per person. Toronto’s premiere Japa-nese taiko drumming group, Nagata Shachu, proudly presents as part of its 2013/2014 season, a collaborative concert with shakuhachi master Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos on Saturday, March 15, 2014.

Ramos is one of the leading performers of the shakuhachi (Japanese

end-blownbambooflute)intheworldtoday.HereceivedhisDaiShihan(masterlicense)in2008makinghimthefirstCanadianandone of only a handful of non-Japanese to receive this esteemed honour. He will collaborate with Nagata Shachu and its founder, Kiyoshi Nagata, in an exciting evening of new works, traditional Japanese folk songs and exhilarating drumming. 浴衣着付けワークショップ一人では着物を着られないと思っている貴女、まずは浴衣から始めてみませんか？この3回のワークショップでは、浴衣の着方と2種類の帯結びを学びます。コース修了生には、JCCCの夏祭りに備えて、着付けのおさらいと浴衣を着ての盆踊りの講習会を、6月に予定しています。

基本的なお茶の点前と茶道の精神を学びます。指導は裏千家淡交会トロント支部の先生方です。受講日時： ２０１４年３月２１日、２８日、４月４日、１１日、２５日、５月２日、９日、１６日 夜のクラス：　午後７時から午後９時料金*： ＄７０+HST持ち物：袱紗、古袱紗、楊枝、懐紙（これらのものはJCCCギフトショップでお買い求めいただくことができます。）クラスでは白いソックスか足袋の着用が基本となります。*クラス料金とは別途にお茶菓子代として＄２５を最初のクラスでお支払い下さい。

絵てがみクラスとワークショップ

絵てがみとは。。。大好きな人、気にかかる人、励ましたい人、感謝したい人への直筆の絵入りの手紙です。だから、ヘタでいい。ヘタがいい。気持ちが伝わればいい。書道筆を用いて、絵を描く。下書きなしの一発真剣勝負。色は日本画用の顔彩を用い、透明感のある明るい彩色。あとは、気持ちを伝える素直な言葉でてがみを書き、仕上げは宛先。ポストイン。あなたの心を届けましょう。 初めての方、親子参加、絵てがみ上級者、どんな方も気軽に参加できるワークショップです。スケジュールは以下の通りです。今月は季節の絵てがみを描いてみましょう。移り行く季節の中で、今あなたの廻りにある物を良く見て感じて描き写し、季節に相応しい言葉を探して書き進むと、今の自分の心が見えてきます。

第４回キッズ＆ユースミュージカルワークショップと公演：歌って・踊って２０１４日本のミュージカル劇団員と共に、ミュージカルを通して学ぼう・楽しもう

子供ミュージカルワークショップがひと夏のお休みをはさみ、２０１４年に戻ってきます。日本式指導の元、日本の劇団員と共に過ごすワークショップです。日本組みとカナダ組み、双方が刺激し合い、約２週間の練習を経ての成長が楽しみです。そして今回も素晴らしい感動を多くの人に与えてくれることでしょう。 まだ若干名の空きがあります。お申し込み詳細は下記の通りです。参加経験者も初めてのお子さんも大歓迎。

変貌するお茶碗展示３月３１日まで

日本人なら誰でもなじみがあるお茶碗。そのお茶碗をターティストから一般の方に配り、その人ならではのお茶碗アートを創っていただきました。普通の白いお茶碗がどのように変貌を遂げたのか、ぜひご覧になってみて下さい。展示は２０１４年３月３１日までＪＣＣＣギャラリー内にて。

月例映画鑑賞会のボランティア募集中ただいまＪＣＣＣでは月例映画鑑賞会のお手伝いをしてくれるボランティアを募集中！ 映画鑑賞会は毎月最週木曜日の7時から上映しています。（12月はお休み）仕事内容はチケット販売とスナック販売、映画終了後のシアター内の簡単な清掃です。お手伝い下さるボランティアの皆さんにもその日の映画を楽しんで頂いています。ご興味のある方はvolunteer@jccc.on.caまで由希宛にご連絡下さい。

夏休みキャンプこども

日系文化を取り入れた小学生向けのユニークなキャンプが２０１４年も夏休み中（7月７日ー１１日、７月１４日ー１８日、７月２１ニシー２５日）に行われます。申込詳細はｐ3、または同封のチラシをご覧下さい。お申し込み期間は３月１７日から６月３０日までです。参加人数に限りがありますので、お早めにお申し込み下さい。

３月映画鑑賞会：許されざる者

３月の映画は李相日監督作品、渡辺謙主演「許されざる者」です。この映画はクリント・イーストウッドのアカデミー賞受賞作受賞作の日本映画リメイク版です、２０１３年のＴＩＦＦで上映された話題作です。上映日時は２０１４年３月２７日（木）、午後７時から、入場料はＪＣＣＣ会員＄８、非会員＄１０です。日本語音声、英語字幕。 今年の６月に開催されるトロント日本映画祭の上映映画が映画鑑賞会の前に発表されます。また、「許されざる者」のサウンドに携わり、他にも数々の作品を手がけているフォーリーアーティストの小山吾郎さんをお迎えし、どのようにこの映画の音作りをしていったのかをお話していただきます。乞うご期待！

あらすじ：江戸幕府崩壊後の明治初期、北海道開拓時代の歴史の中で、かつて「人斬り十兵衛」と恐れられていた男が、再び戦いに身を投じていく姿を描く。幕府の命の下、幾多の志士を斬りまくり、恐れられた釜田十兵衛は、幕府崩壊後いつしか姿を消し、人里離れた場所で静かに暮らしていた。やがて月日は流れ、妻に先立たれた十兵衛は、貧困の末に再び刀を手にすることになる（映画．comより）

Kamp Kodomo Summer 2014

Our Mission To provide a stimulating and educational Japanese and Japanese Canadian cultural experience for young

children.

Who can register? Children ages 6 (as of December 31, 2013) to 12 Years

Dates Session 1 – July 7 – 11 Session 2 – July 14 – 18 Session 3 – July 21 – 25

Times Camp Hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Extended camp care is available daily from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. and from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.

Fee $ 200/week

Early bird discount $180/week if paid in full by April 30, 2014 10% discount for JCCC Members

5% discount for additional siblings attending the same session (not available with an early bird registration)

Extended care is $ 35/week per child.

What is included?

Children get to participate in a variety of hands-on sessions including:

Drama Martial Arts Music Cooking

Dance Language History Arts and Crafts

Geography And More!!!

There are two snacks each day and one special activity day per week that may include an offsite trip.

Children must bring a nutritious lunch and drink each day.

Why register? Kamp Kodomo is run by a head instructor as well as many dedicated volunteers. This team

knows that exposure to culture is the best way to ignite interest and to hand over tradition to the next generation. Together, they work to ensure that the children have a wonderful time in a safe

environment.

person or via fax. Enrollment is limited to 20 children per week. Registrations will not be accepted until after March 17, 2014
