WWW.SWSWATERCOLOR.ORG MARCH, 2017 Next Meeting: Tuesday, March 14, 2017, 7:00 pm, LLUMC Asbury Hall Iain Stewart is a watercolor artist / illustrator and a signature member of both the American and National Watercolor Societies. His work has re- ceived numerous awards in international competition and he is a sought after juror and workshop instructor. He is also an architectural illustrator with an international clientele- a business he has run for the last 20 years. Iain maintains a studio in Opelika, Alabama. Artist’s Statement: “I rely on instinct a great deal and my sketchbook when selecting subjects for my paintings. The lion’s share of my work is done in one sitting as my real struggle in painting is to capture the initial vision for any given piece. I am most often motivated by capturing a definitive lighting condition and how it influences shape and value rather than faithfully representing the subject as witnessed. Watercolor is uniquely suited for this task as “light” is reserved from the first brush strokes and must be pro- tected throughout the painting process. The underlying narrative in my work is not based on any theme in particular but quite simply how “place” is inhabited and used daily. I often use remember atmospheric and lighting conditions in my work and say that I paint from life and memory simultaneously. My watercolors are not only a translation of what I see, but more importantly, an expression of how I choose to view the world.“ Come watch Iain demonstrate his award-winning technique at the March meeting. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

“Art is a reflection of poetry and beauty of the heart and mind without the use of any words.” !― Debasish Mridha!

An exceedingly mild February creates an anticipation of early, early spring. Trees in bud, in-sects in abundance, robins hopping about, doves cooing – time to get out in the sunshine for some fresh air and plein air painting!!!The guest artist for March is highly acclaimed Iain Stewart who will be conducting a three-day workshop and also doing the demonstration at our monthly membership meeting – you won’t want to miss this. !!The work done by the Nominating Committee in securing leadership for next year is greatly appreciated. Led by Jerry Kagay, Chair, Betty Anderson, Robert McLaughlin, Ron Stephens and Bob Voges, the committee has done an outstanding job. If you have been asked to fill a role for next year, thank you! New leadership will be introduced at this month’s membership meeting! We will also vote on the nominations at this meeting as well as our modest dues increase that was presented at our February meeting. !!We have a very special treat coming in our April meeting…Naomi Brotherton, our SWS founding member, teacher extraordinaire, passionate painter, dear friend and supporter of us all will give a demonstration Tuesday evening April 11th at our monthly membership meeting. Please make plans to attend this special evening.!!Also in April will be our spring paint-out on April 21 & 22! Gaylord O’Con, Lou Bono and Ron Stephens have created an exciting and fun filled painting location in historic Palestine (found-ed in 1848). I hope you’ve seen the flyers and the agenda for the weekend. In addition to painting in Palestine, we will gather at Buffalo Ranch (about 25 miles SW of Palestine). The ranch is also available for folks to use for plein air painting on Saturday. Our bull, Mirabeau Lamar, sports an SWS brand on his left hip and loves to have his picture painted!! That evening we will host an early dinner and review all the wonderful work created by participants! !!!!Bryce A. Weigand!!

SHARON SERRAGO Spotlight on Artist of the Month

My first memory of painting was when I was five, proudly showing off a “picture” I had drawn for my mother. Her “oohs” and “ahs” have continually been my inspiration. Memorable encounters were at my mother’s side, herself an artist, both of us painting on the same canvas. As I grew older though, art took a back seat to my music career, and it wasn’t until the late 70’s that my childhood inspiration finally worked its way to the surface and I started painting again. Very quickly I found a market for portraits and landscapes on consignment that supplemented my income while raising my three children. However, I began to feel stifled because I wasn’t painting what I felt inside: I was painting what other people wanted. When I finally began painting “my way,” I was met with most interesting comments. Questions like “Were you on drugs when you painted that?” became common. I call myself an abstract artist because that is where my heart is, and frankly, some of my work does look a bit bizarre, but sometimes that special moment happens when the paint just takes over and the painting suddenly appears. It’s times like these that my heart sings. That’s why I keep painting and why I am so in love with it.!!Eventually I moved out of oils and into watercolor after seeing a body of Jane Jones’ art at a show. The trans-parency of watercolor was enchanting. However, going from oils to watercolor was not such an easy task. My first real lesson ended abruptly with me in tears and running out the door because I could not control the paint. It was a mess. But Perseverance is an artist’s best friend, and after years of study, I learned to control that medium. Today I work in almost all mediums: oils, watercolors, pastels, acrylics, and collage. Acrylics and collage are currently my favorites. !!I am what some would call “a workshop junkie.” I love studying with new artists and am always interested in how they approach their subject matter. My studies with Jane Jones, John Salminen, Ken Hosner, Jan Sitts, and Lana Grow have been most influential in my work. I am a signature member of SWS and have been accepted into Western Federation WS, Alabama WS, Georgia WS, Illinois WS, Irving WS, Houston WS, and many others. A teacher by profession, I am always honored when art clubs and organizations invite me to present demonstra-tions, offer critiques of members’ works, and judge competitions. I love to share what I have learned from others. Perhaps my most important belief is that anyone can learn to paint. With a foundation in design and color theory, we artists can stretch beyond the boundaries of “rules” and can create wonderful works of art that truly touch the soul. My goal is to do more of that.!Website: www.serrago.com! !
