Dear Readers I will take this opportunity to thank you all for the support the parish has given me and my family, over these past 5+ years.

If you are reading this, you obviously haven‘t been too disgruntled or disturbed by my ruminations since October 2005…or you are extra keen to read The Clifton Chronicles cover-to-cover, lest you miss anything that is going on in our village. For that is what is so special about this medium, this vehicle. The Chronicles has been a faithful voice of the many and varied community groups and organisations within the Parish of Clifton for so many years - long may it continue to have its uses. Thankfully, The Clifton Chronicles is also electronically published on the very useful parish web-site – both of which have been contributing factors for Clifton garnering the Bedfordshire Village of the Year three times, in the past eight years. My family and I have been very proud to be a part of this vibrant and wonderful community, one that dates back at least to the Doomsday Book. I can honestly say that aside from one pub, one hairdresser, a window company and a fire security company, that we know of, we have tried to ‗buy local‘, to support our community, and have really enjoyed patronising your establishments. It is with sadness and slight trepidation that we depart Clifton, having made so many friends and acquaintances; but know that you will remain in our thoughts and prayers for many, many years to come. As your Rector, I have had the privilege to conduct your weddings, funerals, and baptisms, so very many school assemblies, to attend so very many meetings and functions, from which I have gained tremendous spiritual reward. You have all been very honest and forthcoming, which greatly contributes to a fulfilling life for everyone. Thank you! And now, if I may, I shall pray that the road always rises up to meet you, that the wind be always at your back, the sun always shines on your faces, and that the rain always falls softly upon your fields and gardens. Pax!

Yours in Faith, M-A+

CLIFTON CHRISTMAS CONCERT

It seems that both the bands and the audience

enjoyed the two evenings on 5th and 6th December

and we are pleased to announce that the concerts

raised £713.98p for Church Hall repairs and a

further £495 shared between the two bands. Thank

you to everyone who supported the concert,

especially those who helped out on each night.

FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL Police Surgery The next mobile Police Surgery in the village will be on Thursday 10

th February in the car park of the ―One

Stop‖ between 2.30 – 3.30 pm when the Safer Neighbourhood Team would be happy to meet any members of the public who have issues they wish to discuss or those who just to pop in and say ―Hello‖. HELP PLEASE As you know the Parish Council and a great many residents in the village take great pride in the state of the village and quietly help pick up litter and dispose of it or do similar tasks. The Parish Council is very grateful to all those people who contribute to Clifton‘s good reputation in the area and hopes that it will continue in the future. At the meeting on January 13

th it was

decided that there should be a:

―Village Spring Clean and Litter Pick‖

26th and 27th March

Volunteers are sought to help with the litter pick and also if one is handy with a paint brush to help paint the 6 public seats and the pond wall. Any assistance would be most welcome.

Clifton Chronicles February 2011

Welcome back, we hope you all had a lovely Christmas

and we wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year.

All the staff and pupils wish Mark Aaron-Tisdale and

his family all the best for the future. We hope you all

settle into your new jobs, home and school. We would

like to take this opportunity to thank you for your involvement in All

Saints V.A. Lower School as Rector and the Chair of Governors. Good

Luck!

January Events

Drama Students from Samuel Whitbread Community College came into

school and performed a short ‘Just So Story’ for the children on 14th

January.

We have been lucky enough to have Bedfordshire Music visit the school on

a regular basis. This year the music will be themed around a Pop Group.

The children really enjoy watching experts play their instruments and

interact with them. Unfortunately we may be loosing Bedfordshire Music

and their talents due to the Government cut backs.

On Monday 31st January we had our annual theatre visit. This year M & M

Productions performed Peter Pan. It is a great opportunity for the

children to experience a live performance.

February

Some of the children will be participating in a Gym competition on the 4th

February.

The last day of this half term is Friday 18th February and children are

back in school on Monday 28th February.

After School Clubs and Extended Care

The school offers various after school clubs throughout the year for

those children who have a particular interest in the activity offered,

these clubs are not to be used as childcare. Woodlands offer extended

care before and after school with a variety of activities. All clubs and

activities change half termly throughout the year.

All Saints Lower School PTA news

Christmas Fayre update This was once again a very busy afternoon and thank you to everyone who came along to support us. Hopefully you and your children enjoyed the many activities. The Fayre is one of our major fund raising events of the year and we raised an amazing £2000 which is shared with the church. Thank you as always to PTA Committee Members, all the staff and of course church members who all made the day so successful. And of course we could not have raised so much without the generosity of the following companies who all contributed by giving us raffle prizes:

North Herts Leisure Centre Sainsbury‘s Morrisons Asda Cineworld Stevenage Monkey Bizness MK Dons The Crown Henlow I Cuts Clifton Will Davidson LV= (Hitchin) Headlines Shefford Paradise Wildlife Park EWG Services Carrie Molloy Pampered Chef Ironing Ladies Shefford Cliftonbury Farm Willows Farm Village Seat GL14 Shuttleworth Thurleigh Farm Centre The Golden Lion Phoenix Trading Little Rascals Play Centre Hitchin

Elvis Night update This was a hugely popular event which everyone enjoyed. We raised over £600. Watch this space for another Elvis night over the coming months.

CLIFTON CARE SCHEME CARE SCHEME AWARD

We are proud to announce that at the end of last year Clifton Parish Council kindly presented the Clifton Care Scheme with a certificate in recognition of the contribution that our volunteers have made to the life of our village.

MILEAGE RATES

As a result of the enormous increase in the cost of petrol and diesel and the rising cost of vehicle maintenance, we regretfully have to increase our rate for providing transport. Therefore, from 1st February we will be charging 45p per mile for this service.

The rates are carefully calculated to ensure that volunteers are properly reimbursed for costs incurred (i.e. fuel, wear and tear, additional maintenance and depreciation), they do not represent the full cost of running a car. Volunteers do not receive any payment for the service which they so willingly render.

DIGITAL SWITCHOVER

With effect from March the current analogue television service will be discontinued. To continue viewing television you must changeover to receive the digital transmission which has already been introduced. If you have any problem or need advice the Care Scheme has registered to provide initial support – just call us.

IF YOU NEED HELP

If you or someone you know needs a bit of assistance; e.g. transport, help at home, or maybe just getting some information - please phone . . .

07817 614654

. . . and we‘ll do whatever we can to help

All Saints’ Clifton Churchyard Regulations

Our village churchyard is a resource and respite for everyone; but it falls to the church council and the Rector to faithfully maintain it, according to the Diocese of St. Albans‘ published regulations.

Regular grass cutting in the summer is paid for by the PCC (from funds provided by the congregation) and by an annual grant from the Parish Council. Other work is carried out by volunteers with many bereaved families maintaining the grave space where their loved one is buried. It is an interesting fact that ‗ownership of all grave spaces remains vested in the parish priest‘ and they do not become the property of the bereaved family.

We are aware that many people will be unfamiliar with the regulations governing good practice in the churchyard and would encourage those who visit the churchyard to look at the Diocesan website or ask the Rector or Wardens for an abridged copy. The Diocesan website is: http://www.stalbans.anglican.org/

Regulations include:

No tombstone or other monument may be introduced, renewed,

removed or altered without first obtaining permission

Grave spaces must be level and grassed by about a year after the

interment

Flower vases may be incorporated into the headstone but separate

flower vases elsewhere in the grave space are not permitted.

Fresh flowers can be laid on the grave or placed within headstone

vases and bulbs may be planted in the grave space

Other articles are not permitted; these include but are not limited to:

artificial flowers, perennials, shrubs or photographs

Articles not permitted within the regulations or dead flowers will be

removed during regular maintenance of the churchyard

We hope to continue to make our churchyard in Clifton a peaceful and welcoming place where the bereaved can visit while also seeking to maintain the rich biodiversity of the area.

CLIFTON MOTHERS’ UNION Happy New Year to you all. We have a full programme fixed for 2011. January 18th will be our AGM. Followed by a social afternoon when we will knit blankets for premature babies. February 15th Don Gray will give an illustrated talk on a ―Trip through the Rockies‖. March 15

th Marian

Read will be our speaker ―Amusing Moments in a Volunteer‘s Afternoon‖ Every year the Women‘s World Day of Prayer is held in a different Church in our area, for all denominations. This year on 4th March it will be in All Saint‘s Church Clifton, at 2.p.m. This service is International and this year the women of Chile have set the service - the theme ―How Many Loaves Have You‖. We only hold this service in our Church once every 10 years, so we hope to be well represented by Clifton women. We meet every 3rd Tuesday of the month in the Church Hall at 2.p.m., and a warm welcome will be given to anyone wishing to join us.

Spurgeon's Family Centre

I write to thank you and the villagers of Clifton for your very kind donation of toys to the Contact Centre. As you may be aware, Spurgeon's Family Centre works in partnership with Social Services, the NHS and other caring agencies on a very wide range of projects to help the most vulnerable and needy families in the local community. Our main area is preventative work, to try to prevent family breakdown and children being placed into care. We also offer private and comfortable rooms at the Centre where families can have contact with those children already in care, run outreach family support groups and befriending, a scheme to appoint voluntary adult befrienders for children in care, a scheme to appoint childminders for children with disabilities and a play-scheme at Bedford Prison. We are focused and committed to further our work in areas such as this where there is a real need. The work would not be possible without donations from people such as yourselves, and we are always heartened when our work is remembered in this way.

Once again, thank you, and best wishes, Spurgeons

WOODLANDS NEWSLETTER

A warm welcome back to all the parents and children. An extra big welcome to our new children, Oscar, Nathan, Lucas and Annabel who are joining us for the very first time. We hope they enjoy their time with us at the Woodlands. We also wish our leavers, Amelia, Brenna and Dylan a fond farewell and wish them well as they start at their new schools.

Our theme this term is Transport. We are hoping to find some Parents or Grandparents who either have an unusual car, or do a job that involves driving different sorts of vehicles. Please contact the office if you can assist!! We will be looking at buses, cars, bikes and trains. We hope to be able to model a car and a train out of ‗junk‘, build a track out of Lego, and construct a road outside complete with signs and crossings for the children to ride the pre-school bikes and cars around. The highlight of this topic will be a visit from a Police Officer complete with car. All the children in session should get an opportunity to have a look in the vehicle and if we are very lucky a chance to hear the siren and see the flashing lights in operation!!

Later on in the term we will be finding out about the Chinese New Year, which this year celebrates the year of the rabbit.

Finally we have started a Bluebirds ‗taster‘ session for our funded 4‘s. All these children have been given a ‗bookbag‘, which contains a book and home task for the children and parents to read and complete at home if they so wish, on a weekly basis. We are delighted to see how well the children have completed these tasks and how proud they are to hand in their ‗homework‘. Long may this enthusiasm last!! Many thanks to the Mums & Dads for supporting the reading and activities at home.

A reminder for anyone shopping on the internet: please go via our easy fundraising link which is http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/ It doesn’t cost a penny extra to shop and you can raise valuable funds for Woodlands at the same time! It only takes a couple of minutes to register by clicking on Register as a user. Please specify The Woodlands Pre-School Clifton so we receive the donations. As many retailers now give extra discounts when you buy on-line, you may even save money!

CLIFTON W.I

Our last meeting for 2010 was a very successful Xmas party. We enjoyed the company of W.I members from Henlow, Arlesey, Stofold, Shefford and Langford. Our

committee had decorated the church hall making it look very Christmassy to enjoy our meal and entertainment. The first course was prepared and served by our Committee, and a delicious selection of desserts provided by our members. Finally tea and coffee was served to all. To complete our splendid evening we were entertained by singer Charmain. Songs that we all knew and readily joined in, ending a thoroughly, friendly and enjoyable night. President Katherine welcomed 33 members and 1 visitor to our first 2011 meeting. Sec Iris read out her monthly report, and Treasurer Chris gave current financial details. Katherine mentioned some interesting events from W.E.Y.E magazine, and also thank you notes from our W.I‘s who joined us for our Xmas party. Members were reminded that the Flower Club starts again in May. Katherine read the proposed Resolutions and the most voted one was – controlled use of Mobility Scooters. Tonight we entertained ourselves with a Beetle Drive, and Christine, Lisa and Teri served us all with tea and biscuits to end a very successful fun night. Next meeting: February 2nd - My stories and Your Stories. Mr Philip Lane. Competition: A storybook. Tea Ladies: Mary Newman, Muriel Webster, Audrey Steeds

We meet at CLIFTON CHURCH HALL 7.30 pm

Poppy Appeal 2010 Thanks to your amazing generosity this years Poppy Appeal in Clifton raised an all time record of £1472. 77pence. We should like to thank everyone who contributed by donating and collecting.

Bedfordshire Police

Bedfordshire Police would like to wish the residents of Clifton a Happy and Safe New Year. Speeding is an ongoing issue in Clifton and on 6/01/2011 a mobile speed check was completed by the Safer Neighbourhood Team in Stockbridge Road. Further checks will take place over the coming months. Calls in relation to anti social behaviour have decreased over the last 3 months but unfortunately crime has seen a steady increase. Residential burglaries have occurred in the area – remember to lock all doors and windows and leave anything of value out of view. Take car keys/mobiles/lap tops and handbags upstairs at night. Remove the opportunity from any unwanted visitors.

A mobile surgery will take place on: Thursday 10 February, 2011,

One Stop Shop car park, 2.30 pm – 3.30 pm

The Safer Neighbourhood Team can be contacted 01234 842567 or SNT.SheffordStotfold&[email protected] or if you require prompt police action dial 01234 841212 or 999 in the event of an emergency.

Biggleswade Sandy Lions Club

A member of Lions International, the largest voluntary service organisation in the world.

MANY, MANY THANKS

Biggleswade Sandy Lions would like to say a very big ‗thank you‘ to all who helped and supported our tin shakes, sleigh runs and our hugely successful Christmas dance – we‘ve already booked the same band for this year. The weather put a stop to one tin shake and the second Biggleswade sleigh run, but we still distributed a record 250 parcels to the lonely and needy. We are grateful to Langford Garden Centre for Santa‘s Grotto and to Asda and Sainsburys for the tin shakes. Many thanks too to G&M Growers who also with Aldi, Jordans, Bedfordshire Growers and the Guides provided the food, not forgetting Rainbow Rentals for the use of a van.

A special vote of thanks and congratulations to Clifton where you gave us a magnificent £670 – a new record.

Our next event is our:

Annual Jumble Sale Clifton Community Centre

CLIFTON PARISH COUNCIL. Speeding Offence Figures for Clifton

Noting and acting on the concerns expressed by the Parish Council, camera enforcement vehicles (CEVs) have been sited throughout the village over the past months. Between February and the 11th November 2010 there were 209 drivers subject to prosecution. The CEVs are manned by civilian staff (not police officers) of the Bedfordshire and Luton Casualty Reduction Partnership. Unfortunately the partnership has been the subject of the recent financial cut backs, causing a reduction in the availability of the enforcing staff. Currently there are a minimum of 214 community concern sites, plus collision cluster sites that the three enforcement staff visit; but they will still endeavour to maintain the checks in Clifton.

Hi Everyone,

Happy and prosperous New Year to you, your family, and friends from all the committee members in Clifton Residents Association.

Our aim for the coming year is to help, and assist you with any community problems in our village. At our next meeting we will be setting up an agenda for the new year, things to do etc., so anything that you think we should know about, please get in touch with either our secretary by ‗phone, myself by e-mail or talk to any committee member.

Just a gentle reminder, because we are a community group, we are not able to take on personal problems. ‗If in doubt, give us a shout‘!

Stay lucky, Den Fensome

Poverty—People made it. People can end it.

Christian Aid is a Christian organisation that insists the world can and must be swiftly changed to one where everyone can live a full life, free from poverty.

We work globally for profound change that eradicates the causes of poverty, striving to achieve equality, dignity and freedom for all, regardless of faith or nationality. We are part of a wider movement for social justice.

We provide urgent, practical and effective assistance where need is great, tackling the effects of poverty as well as its root causes.
