2012 off to a great start

Business News

Melissa CoulsonPresident

My second term as president started just like last year – with the exciting whirlwind of the sports celebrity dinner and Auction. this year marked the 10th anniversary of the event and it was every bit as memorable as the previous nine years. spectacular celebrities including curtis Joseph and Jesse Barfield, an entertaining master of ceremonies in Gord stellick and a wonderful evening put on by a committee of hard working volunteers. one of those volunteers has been a face around the chamber for many years and is now stepping down from his role of co-chair of the sports celebrity committee. Angelo deMedicis of Home Hardware Building centre here in Milton has served on this committee for 10 years and is also a past board member of the chamber. We thank Angelo for all his hard work and dedication over the years and wish him well in the future. The purpose of this fun filled evening is to raise funds for our scholarship Program which currently provides 6 Milton students with $1,000 to assist with their post secondary education. As our community grows and new high schools are added, we anticipate that the need for scholarship assistance will only increase and events like this, along with our Bacon-on-a-Bun cart that you see at the Farmers’ Market, help us get closer to our goal of achieving our target of having a self-sufficient fund. the sports celebrity dinner raised in excess of $18,000 for the scholarship program. As I write this update, the Mayor’s Breakfast is scheduled to take place in february and it is expected to bring together over 220 business leaders to

hear the continuing news about Milton successes. This year, I have been invited to be a panelist and speak to the audience to share the chambers views on pointed questions asked by Milton cAo Mario Belvedere. Milton has been given the dignified distinction again as the fastest growing community in canada and i am interested to see what kinds of questions Mario will pose to the panel this year. this event is always like a “state of the Union” address for Milton and i will be very interested in hearing what the next few years hold in store for our town. Last year at this time i was very excited about our upcoming trip to china. this year, the Milton Chamber is hosting a trip to china and i’m very excited for the 52 people who are planning on attending this trip in April. i know from my own experience that this trip will prove to be educational, enlightening and also exhausting. With the Prime Minister announcing new trade agreements with China just recently, its proving to be a very opportune time to visit the land of the rising sun. You never know where business will take you and expanding horizons can bring opportunity. Upcoming events include our community Awards Gala and Biz to Biz trade show. Make sure you come out for a night of excellent food and fanfare with many of Milton’s business leaders in April. see you at the next event!

customer service in a changing world … An article from the canadian champion from 1969 reads like this: Just thinking about attending the annual meeting of the Milton chamber of Commerce tonight, got me thinking about a piece i read somewhere which was apparently written by a disgruntled customer. I’d like to quote it, with a dedication to everyone involved in servicing customers in the town of Milton: “remember me? i’m the fellow who goes into a restaurant, sits down and patiently waits while the waitresses finish their visiting before taking my order.” “i’m the fellow who goes quietly into a department store and stands quietly while the clerks finish their little chit-chat.” “i’m the fellow who drives into a service station and never blows his horn, but lets the attendant take his time.” “You might say i’m the good guy. But do you know who else i am?” “i’m the fellow who never comes back.” “it amuses me to see business spending so much money every year to get me back … when I was there in the first place.” “And all they needed to do was give me some service, and extend a little courtesy.” Have things really changed that much in 2012? We all want to be appreciated by the business owner, and be treated with courtesy and respect by staff. Not ignored, not left standing, waiting for service. I ask you to reflect on the above article and ask yourself some hard questions: • What is the first impression given by your front-line staff? • Are your premises sparkling, inviting and customer friendly? • Do you keep customers waiting while conducting personal business? • Do you know what your clients want/ need/expect? Perhaps we all need to take a look at how we provide customer service to our clients, customers and members. Are we paying attention to their wants and fulfilling their expectations? Begin with a smile; follow the golden rule and listen to what customers want and try to answer their needs honestly and quickly. the world may be changing but excellent customer service will never go out of fashion. if we all train our staff to be friendly, courteous and attentive we will not

experience: “i’m the fellow who never comes back.” community awarDs sElEction ProcEss (briEf ovErviEw) every year i get asked how we determine the recipients of our community Awards Gala. the process we use has been revised and improved over the past 20 years and most significantly over the past six. In December, January and February we seek nominations for all the categories from the general public and business community.once we receive the nominations the co-chairs meet with me, and two committees are formed with 5 members on each. each committee is populated by 10 different individuals who are Chamber members, former recipients or staff. the purpose of two committees to ensure a transparent selection process is undertaken. committee 1 reviews the nominations and selects the top 3 based upon the information provided in the nomination. committee 2 then discusses the candidates and makes the final selection out of the three. committee 2 members then contact the nominees and ask if they will accept the nomination. in the business categories all three nominees are highlighted at the gala and the recipient is announced at the black tie event. committee 2 selects the Lifetime Achievement and citizen of the Year recipients and informs them they have been selected as recipients. once all the nominees and recipients have agreed to stand then they are interviewed for a video that will be played during the community Awards Gala. during the evening the recipients are announced and asked to say a few words to those gathered to pay tribute to success in our community.

Join us for an evening of celebration on Friday, April 13, 2012.

January Business After Hours

changes to the canada Pension Plan

the Milton district Hospital foundation was the host of the first Business After Hours of 2012. Over 70 Chamber members and guests attended the January Business After Hours at the Milton district Hospital. Attendees networked over yummy food and drinks. thank you to the Milton district Hospital foundation for a great evening.

As you may know, changes to the Canada Pension Plan (cPP) will continue to be introduced until 2016. However, many have come into effect on January 1, 2012.

what’s nEw? Here’s an overview of the cPP changes:1) individuals retiring before the age 65 will not have to stop working to begin receiving the cPP retirement pension.2) The new Post-Retirement Benefit came into effect on January 1, 2012, which means that: • If your members are under age 65 and working while receiving their cPP retirement pensions, both the members and their employers will have to make cPP contributions (these contributions will go toward the new Post-Retirement Benefit, which will be added to the members’ cPP retirement pensions). • If your members are at least 65 but under 70

and working while receiving their cPP retirement pensions, they will make CPP contributions that will go toward the Post-Retirement Benefit unless they elect not to contribute. • The monthly CPP retirement pension amount will increase by a larger percentage if taken after age 65. • The monthly CPP retirement pension amount will decrease by a larger percentage if taken before age 65. • The number of years of low or zero earnings that are automatically dropped from the calculation of the cPP retirement pension will increase.

Note: These changes do not apply to the Quebec Pension Plan.

Milton rises to the top with “this Way Up” campaign

the town of Milton was the recipient of three national awards for its “Milton this Way Up” postcards at the 43rd Annual National economic developers Association of canada (edAc) conference in Peterborough in october 2011. the town of Milton’s economic Development Office was awarded with the following: • 1st Prize – Printed Collateral (Best of the Best) • Cup Contender – for “Best of Show” • EDAC Cup Winner – for “Best of show” the purpose of the postcards is to entice businesspeople visiting Milton to learn more about why Milton is the best place to invest. the catchy designs and themes encourage them to visit the website www.miltonthiswayup.ca or contact the Economic Development Office for more information on opportunities, features and benefits of the community. edAc’s 2011 Marketing canada Awards program attracted 206 submissions from across canada. the town of Milton is the second winner of the EDAC Cup, which was initiated in 2010. the 2010 winner was the city of calgary. edAc is canada’s national organization of economic development professionals, representing all provinces and territories across canada with more than 900 members. New economic development marketing strategy leverages “this Way Up” themeThe Town’s Economic Development Office is developing a new three-year economic development marketing strategy for Milton that will build on the highly successful “Milton this Way Up” campaign. the 2011-2013 marketing strategy

aims to raise Milton’s profile and promote Milton’s identity as the ideal place for business and investment driven by its tremendous assets, through the themes Knowledge Lives Here, Milton Makes It Happen, and The Art of Better Living. Additional themes will be developed to point to Milton’s excellent location and geographical attributes. the new campaign will employ a variety of media including print, multimedia, and web to communicate its message, as well as a launch event to engage the local business community in the program. The Town has contracted local agency, BANG! Many group benefit plans provide emergency health insurance for travelers. But what if the traveler is your dependent child, whose destination is a post-secondary school outside your home province? With Chamber Plan, dependent students are covered. To qualify, your firm must include one of the Chambers Plan’s health benefits in its group benefit plan. And the employee has to be insured for family, rather than individual benefits. This extends coverage to a spouse and dependant children. Under the Chamber Plan, family benefits include all dependant children up to age 21. Over that age, dependants whom are full time students are cover up to age 25 (age 26 in Quebec). When an eligible dependant is at school outside the employee’s normal province of residence, the Chamber Plan can provide emergency medical benefits. An emergency would include an accident or an acute illness, but not routine medical services. regular check-ups are predictable appointments must be scheduled at home! the plan will cover many expenses arising from an emergency, if the student contacts the out-of-country coordinator at the outset. the experts at the emergency centre will help the student find appropriate treatment and will work with the student’s medical practitioners to consider repatriating the student as quickly as possible. Benefits also include help with travel arrangements, a bedside visit by a parent, and return of vehicle services. However an emergency unfolds, the chambers Plan’s emergency medical benefits provide a safety net for students enrolled outside their home territory. if you have a family member planning on

competing and winning in international markets

20 March / April 2012

When the global recession hit, it walloped the aerospace industry. tourist travel collapsed. Business flying was curtailed. orders vanished. But that wasn’t the story at Alta Precision Inc., a fast-growing, family-owned maker of landing gear parts in Montreal. sales barely dipped and have since recovered completely. At the height of the downturn, Alta was even able to secure a major new customer in europe. Alta has reaped the benefits of a strategy to become a global competitor in the aerospace industry. It refined its product line, invested to boost operational efficiency and aggressively tackled foreign markets. It’s all added up to a more robust, innovative and productive business that’s a model for other canadian entrepreneurs to follow as they confront intensifying global competition. “If you have just two or three customers, you’re vulnerable,” says Guillermo Alonso, Jr., who took over from his father as Alta’s president in 2006. “For us, being international has meant security. our backlog of orders is healthy.” Alta’s current success stands in contrast to the company’s fortunes just a few years ago. At the beginning of the decade, Alta faced big troubles. The 9/11 attacks had just taken place, and the airline business was on life support. the economy was being wrenched by the dot-com stock collapse, and customers were becoming increasingly demanding.

the company had done well supplying Montreal-based aerospace concerns like Bombardier, CAE and Pratt & Whitney since Alonso’s father, Guillermo, Sr., founded it in 1979. But the sudden cascade of new challenges made change a necessity. Alta started knocking on doors in the U.s. and in 2003, won its first big deal, a military contract. the U.s. now accounts for 50% of sales. Just as important, the sales helped recession-proof the company because they diversified Alta’s sources of income. Alta’s experience reflects that of many small and medium-sized canadian companies. Going international is often not just about expanding; it’s about survival. But how do you compete internationally? is it even the right step? those dilemmas are top of mind for many business executives who approach carl Gravel for assistance. “Many entrepreneurs see immense risks, and it makes them hesitate,” Gravel says. “Our job is to show them that yes, there are risks, but you can manage them.” Gravel is national director of global competitiveness at Bdc. He heads a support team that helps canadian companies seeking to build their businesses internationally. Before heading into international markets, Gravel says, companies must ensure their fundamentals are in order, in areas such as sales and marketing, innovation strategy and operational efficiency.

The last one is the most important, he says. “If you’re not competitive locally, it’s going to be hard to work internationally.” that means investing to boost productivity even when things are tough, Gravel says. He also encourages companies to look at countries beyond the U.S., including emerging markets, which have shown high rates of growth in the economic recovery. Another potential market: multinationals operating in canada. Going global doesn’t necessarily require exporting directly to international markets, he says. it can also mean selling into global supply chains, much as Alta has done as a supplier to major canadian aerospace concerns. this can eventually open doors to new markets where these multinationals operate. entrepreneurs need to proceed with care when expanding internationally, says Dominic Deneault, co-author of Le Québec sur le podium (French only), a study of 25 successful large and small Quebec businesses operating abroad. the biggest mistake he has seen is companies failing to adapt their business model or product and service portfolio to their targeted foreign market. “You have to make sure you fit the needs of your client,” says Deneault, who is a corporate strategist at deloitte inc. in Montreal. “that means you have to redesign your product or service and adapt your marketing pitch, operational processes, strategy, branding—

often your entire value chain.” Apart from a solid global competitiveness strategy, business leaders also need internal fortitude, Deneault adds. That means ambition, tenacity and an appetite for risk. Back at Alta, Alonso and his family (his father is still involved in the business as chairman, while sister Sonia is vice-president of administration) realized they had to retool their business as they went international. “customers are more demanding. it used to be that quality and on-time delivery were the most important things in our industry,” Alonso says. “Today, quality and delivery are givens. If you don’t have those, you aren’t even selected. Now, it’s price, price, price. And you can’t reduce your price without changing the way you do things.” Alta responded by focusing on adding value in the area where the company excelled—making landing gear. It dropped

aircraft engines and fuselages from the product line-up. “We want to become the best in the world at supplying landing gear parts.” Alta also hired Bdc consulting to implement a lean manufacturing program, which aims to streamline production and improve international competitiveness with a just-in-time manufacturing process. Since 2000, Alta has grown from 30 employees to 75, and plans to expand to 120. “If we didn’t have the international sales, we would have struggled a lot more than we did,” Alonso says. “Now we are ready for the upturn of the economy.” global comPEtitivEnEss basics Before you start eyeing a lucrative new international market for your business, you need a plan. Poor planning and execution are the culprits in nearly three-quarters of

failed corporate expansions, says business strategist dominic deneault. Here are some important elements of a globalization plan. 1) funDamEntals You should be sure your fundamentals are in good shape and can be replicated from country to country before embarking on an international expansion. that means focusing on such things as your sales and marketing, supply chain, operational efficiency and innovation strategy. You also need to be sure you’ve got the financial capacity to stay the course until sales start rolling in. 2) stratEgy Are you expanding as part of a carefully thought-out growth strategy—or just for growth’s sake? Good reasons for going global can include diversification, pursuing market leadership, acquiring complementary assets, developing new competitive advantages and creating synergies with current operations. 3) tEnacity entrepreneurs who successfully navigate international waters often have a specific mix of personal qualities—tenacity, ambition and an appetite for risk. “The first international venture often doesn’t work,” Deneault says. “That can lead entrepreneurs to question their international ambitions. If they don’t have the ambition, tenacity and a burning desire to learn from mistakes, they may have a problem.”
