For this grant, coinvestigator Julie Levy developed the sample collection protocols. This is a multicenter project which I am coordinating and participating in. I have done all statistical analyses and edited manuscripts. The objectives of this project are to compare immune responses to naturally occurring disease and vaccination using the new FIV vaccine in cats for the currently available PCR and antibody tests.
7. ASPCA Partners in Caring Principal Investigator: “Spaying and Neutering Feral Cats for the Veterinary College Feral Cat Surgery Program.” $5000; November 2002 to October 2003. These funds go to support spay and castrations surgeries for community feral cats in the feral cat surgery program.

Data collection will occur in Teramo Province, Italy (in Italian) by staff of IZS. I provided the objectives and outlined the approaches for the project and have been directly involved analysis and survey design. This project collected telephone survey information on pet ownership, husbandry and opinions about freeroaming dogs and cats and evaluate the population dynamics of owned dogs and cats in the region.

Interventions include spay/neuter, vaccination and identification of owned cats, assistance with cost, transportation and any other barriers as well as trap, neuter and return of feral cats in the neighborhoods. Current handling involves animal control trapping and removal of cats on complaint. Most cats are euthanized after being brought to the local shelter.
