Located in the heart of the Mother Lode Country, it was one of the first caves discovered in California, in October 1850, just 2 years after the discovery of gold at Sutters Mill 50 miles away. It is believed to have been the first commercial cave in California. (Halliday 1962) In 1855 it was used as a meeting place for a local political party and also for local dances, so why not previously as a campsite by a miner and his daughter. The song is usually credited to Percy Montrose (1884), although it is sometimes credited to Barker Bradford. One source tells us that It is unclear when, where and by whom the song was first recorded in English for others to hear, but the first version to reach the Billboard charts was that by Bing Crosby recorded on June 14, 1941.(Anon. 2019) However, research has turned up an earlier version recorded in 1938 by The Ranch Boys for Decca Records. SONG BACKGROUND:

No doubt the best-known of the marginal cave songs, it starts right out with the cave in the first verse of the first stanza –

In a cavern, in a canyon Excavating for a mine Dwelt a miner, forty-niner And his daughter, Clementine

The mention of the “forty-niner” clearly sets the scene during the California gold rush in 1849. Caves were investigated for gold, but few were actually mined for it because gold doesn’t occur in limestone. But to find the cave where the miner and his daughter lived, you need to look in those counties in the northern Sierra Nevada Mountains where the gold rush started.

Calaveras County has the greatest concentration of limestone caves in the state. A likely candidate there would be Cave City Cave, “one of the best-known landmarks of California during the 19th Century. Its history is closely associated with that of gold in the state. Located in the heart of the Mother Lode Country, it was one of the first caves discovered in California, in October 1850, just 2 years after the discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill 50 miles away. It is believed to have been the first commercial cave in California.” (Halliday 1962) In 1855 it was used as a meeting place for a local political party and also for local dances, so why not previously as a campsite by a miner and his daughter. The song is usually credited to Percy Montrose (1884), although it is sometimes credited to Barker Bradford. One source tells us that “It is unclear when, where and by whom the song was first recorded in English for others to hear, but the first version to reach the Billboard charts was that by Bing Crosby recorded on June 14, 1941.” (Anon. 2019) However, research has turned up an earlier version recorded in 1938 by The Ranch Boys for Decca Records. This western folk ballad is placed with world music as a song that has entered the aural tradition. The first known recording by Floyd Thompson & His Hometowners in 1928 was an Old-Time song, but many of the other versions are traditional folk and several versions cross over into other genres, such as popular, children’s, rock, and jazz. ASV/ Living Era 5187 (Tk 1) Notes: Carson Robison was one of the pioneer Old-Time music recording artists. “He played a major role in promoting country music in its early years through numerous recordings and radio appearances. In 1924, he moved to New York City and was signed to his first recording contract with the Victor Talking Machine Company. Also that year, Robison started a professional collaboration with Vernon Dalhart, one of the era's most notable singers.” (Anon. 2019) Carson did the guitar accompaniment for probably all (sometimes uncredited) of Vernon Dalhart’s versions of “The Death of Floyd Collins” and was featured as part of Dalhart’s Texas Panhandlers on the “Floyd Collins Waltz” (see Country Music – Floyd Collins Ballads – First Jenkins Ballad – Floyd Collins Waltz – Other Floyd Collins Ballads).

12” 33rpm (Sd 2 – Bd 1) B. British LP: AN EVENING WASTED WITH TOM LEHRER (1960) Decca SKL 4097 12” 33rpm (Sd 2 – Bd 1) Notes: Tom Lehrer is a well-known satirist and Harvard lecturer. The “Evening Wasted” album was recorded on March 20–21, 1959 in Sanders Theater at Harvard. "’Clementine’ is a parody of the old folk song ‘Oh My Darling Clementine’ as it might have turned out had it had been written by various composers in widely different styles of music. The first verse was in the style of Cole Porter (suggestive of ‘Night and Day’).” (Anon. 2019) The spoken introduction goes – I should like to consider the folk song, and expound briefly on a theory I have held for some time, to the effect that the reason most folk songs are so atrocious is that they were written by the people. If professional songwriters had written them instead, things might have turned out considerably differently. For example, consider the old favorite, with which, I'm sure, you're all familiar, Clementine, you know:

In a cavern, in a canyon, Dadada dadadada...

...a song with no recognizable merit whatsoever - and imagine what might have happened if, for example, Cole Porter had tried writing this song. The first verse might have come out like this:

In a cavern, in a canyon, Excava-ha-ha-hating for a mine, Far away from the boom-boom-boom of the city She was so pretty - what a pity, Clementine.

Los Hooligans were a Mexican rock 'n roll band formed in Mexico City in 1960. Pioneers of the first wave of Rock sung in Spanish where the translation to Spanish of current rock 'n roll songs was the norm. This Mexican rock group should not be confused with the American group, Los Hooligans, that recorded “Alley Oop” in 2003 (see under Rock Music – Alley Oop 1967-2003).
