National Association of School NursingPosition Statement

• School nurses provide leadership in promoting health and safety, including a healthy environment.

Position Statement

• It is the position of the National Association of School Nurses that the Registered Professional school nurse is the leader in the school community to oversee school health policies and programs.   The school nurse serves in a pivotal role to provide expertise and oversight for the provision of school health services and promotion of health education.

Common Core Standards

• These standards define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K‐12

• education careers so that they will graduate from high school able to succeed in entry‐level,

• credit‐bearing academic college courses and in workforce training programs. The Standards

• are (1) research and evidence based, (2) aligned with college and work expectations, (3)

• rigorous, and (4) internationally benchmarked.

STATE GOAL 22:  Understand principles of health promotion and the prevention and treatment of illness and injury.

• Why This Goal Is Important:  Nutrition, exercise, rest, hygiene and safety are the bases for personal, family and occupational health.  From an early age, students can recognize healthy habits and understand why they are important.  As students become more sophisticated in their understanding, they learn and can adopt a variety of ways to minimize illness and enhance health.  Learners will be able to apply the effects of health‐related actions to success in the workplace.  Students who develop an effective understanding of basic health promotion can establish the foundation for achieving and maintaining personal health and well‐being by making informed wellness decisions now and throughout their lives

Illinois State Law

• Every child, prior to enrolling in any public, private/independent or parochial school (including nursery schools, preschool programs, early childhood programs, Head Start, or other pre‐kindergarten child care programs offered or operated by a school or school district) in Illinois shall present to that school proof of immunity.

Conclusion

• School nurses are a school’s first line of defense against contagious disease.

• School hygiene policies and immunization requirements are the best defense against serious infectious diseases. 

• School nurses must be participants in the development of policy and ensure compliance of students to the immunization requirements to promote the highest level of health among the student body.
