The wait was long overdue and anticipation had built
to an all time high. Over homecoming weekend, the
Pioneers were presented their OAC Championship
rings. The ladies were brought into our new film room
on the morning of homecoming where we talked
about what these rings mean for the program and not
to forget the hard work and commitment it took to get
them. We showed them a hype video of the journey it
took to get the rings, recapping the ups and downs
from the season. This reminded them that the path to
success is not a straight line. There are a lot curves
and detours.
One very special part of the presentation was the
opening of the ring boxes. Majority of the ladies already knew
what the design looked like because the seniors had picked them
out. There was one small surprise we decided to add on the inside
of the ring that no one except the coaches knew about. On the
inside was engraved “Hold the Rope.”
This phrase holds very close to our hearts. We adopted this
phrase last season when we had a
little bit of a bump on our journey. We
talked about what holding the rope
means and how we can apply it moving forward. To us,
holding the rope means you are accountable to yourself and
your teammates. We like to illustrate it as if you were
hanging from a cliff by a rope, who would you want to be on
the other side pulling you up? All members of the team have
to be pulling their weight in order to be successful. The cool
thing about this phrase is that it doesn’t just apply to
basketball, but to life in general. You’ll have to hold the rope
in your family, your work place, your friendships and so
much more. We pride ourselves on holding the rope and the
ring is just a constant reminder of how we did so in order to
achieve the ring.

Pioneer Madness Not only do we get excited for our upcoming season, but our community does as well! One of the best things about being a Pioneer is Pioneer Madness. Students, faculty, staff, families, and community members all came out to Ban Johnson Arena for a fun night of activities, contests and introductions of this year’s men’s and women’s teams, as well as a few words from the head coaches to the fans. This year we were able to have over 700 fans in attendance. The best part about this year’s Pioneer Madness was the OAC Tournament Championship banner reveal! As for the fans in attendance, we always love to see them excited for Pioneer basketball. We lead the
conference in home game fan attendance and it is no wonder when we see the support we get at Pioneer Madness to kick off every year! Sophomore Ellen Vichill commented, “Pioneer Madness is awesome because it brings the men’s and women’s team together for some friendly competition and our fan base gets the chance to meet the new team! It’s a lot of fun and gets us so excited for the season!”

Jo Gets the Crown! Homecoming was a busy weekend for us as we not only
gave our team their OAC championship rings, but our own
Jo Herd-Middlebrooks won homecoming queen! Jo
received the honor at the football game and was escorted
by teammates Bailee Brooks, Katie McIlroy, and Shay Lett.
Part of being voted homecoming queen included a
“Munchies on the Mall” competition where nominees had to
bake treats and get judged on taste and presentation. A
pep rally was also part of
the process. This was
held on Friday evening
and consisted of
nominee’s and their chosen sponsor group
performing a chant. The more creative and
energetic the better. Of course Jo’s sponsor group
was her basketball teammates and they blew the
crowd away with a stomp the yard style
performance!
The squad was super hype during their performance, something that is not
unusual of them.
Munchies on the Mall was a joint effort of baking treats by
Jo and her teammates!
A group of our girls traveled
to Jill and Katie’s hometown
for the famous Pumpkin Show
in Circleville, Ohio!
The squad was cited to unravel our new banner!
Here the team gets ready to compete in the
fan contests!
Our very own Jo Herd-Middlebrooks won queen
and Darrien Fields from the Football team won King.
