A s I write this, my last article as your Commandant, I do so with a

humble appreciation of you allowing me to represent your Detachment for these past three years. Throughout this time it has allowed me to kindle a great number of cherished friendships. Many great things have been accomplished through the team efforts of you, the Marines of the Tar Heel Detachment. As your Comman-dant you have heard me say that there is no “I” in team and you continue to exude that in many ways. For this you have my sincere thanks and gratitude. I wish to congratulate James Cox as Com-mandant and his staff, by stepping up to take the helm and wish them great success to take the Tar Heel Detachment to bigger and better endeavors. I encourage each of you to get behind him and help your De-tachment to even greater heights. This year will prove to be a great chal-lenge in that the Tar Heel Detachment will host both the Department and Mid-East Division Convention. This will be in addition to the annual events, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and our outstanding Detachment Marine Corps Birthday Ball celebration. Again this will take a great team effort to continue making them the success expected. At our March meeting we had a large number of special guests including Patri-cia DeZetter and Randy Baher from the Raleigh Durham USO. We presented them with a check for $500 to help in sup-porting their great cause. We also had two Young Marines present, Cooper Johnston and Gavin McKendrick, along with their Commander, Doug Smith. We presented them a check for $2000.00 to help support this great youth program. In addition we sent out checks to the Wounded Warrior Battalion, Hope for Warriors and Military Missions in Action, all great programs that we are proud to support. Also at this meeting three outstanding Midshipmen from the NC State NROTC program were presented as candidates for the detachment to present an Officers Sword at the May Graduation to the one selected as the most outstanding. Mid-

shipmen 1st Class Bridget Glynn, Jacob Lockhart and Austin Sutter were accompa-nied by Captain Barry Merino, Instructor in the NROTC program. Bridget Glynn was voted by those Marines present at the meet-ing as the choice to receive the sword. We wish each of them great success in their career in our United States Marine Corps. We also had RJ DelVecchio as a guest and we look forward to him becoming a mem-ber of the Detachment at our next meeting. In addition, David Butler was voted in as our newest member. We welcome him and look forward to his being an active part of the Detachment. We have a number of our Detachment Ma-rines and their spouses who are dealing with sickness or distress. (Please see the minutes attached to our Scuttlebutt listing who they are.) As always, please keep each of them and their families in your thoughts and prayers. Your Detachment has many events coming up in the next few weeks. In addition to the Eagle COH’s (see announcements), each of you are invited to the Installation of your new officers and staff at Devils Ridge Golf Club on March 12th beginning at 1600. We look forward to seeing each of you there. Other events to put on your calendar are as follows: April 8th the Spring Breakfast Fundraiser at the Golden Corral in Fuquay Varina (see the flyer in the Scuttlebutt.) We need eve-ryone to sell at least two tickets to this fun event. Will you do your part? April 22nd we will have our fourth Annual Pig Pickin’ for both the Detachment and the Young Marines, this is to include family members also. So plan to attend and enjoy great food and lots of camaraderie. This will again be hosted at the home of Gayle Dilday, 812 White Meadows Drive, Fuquay-Varina. See you there!! Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to be your Com-mandant. Semper Fi

I f you ever have the privilege of visiting the Marine Corps History museum in Quantico pay special atten-tion to the display case that commemorates the battle

of the Chosin Reservoir. In the bottom of the display you will notice something that may seem a little out of place and wonders why someone would have put a piece of trash in the bottom of the display. Surely the curators of the museum wouldn’t have left that on accident, so what is the importance of the Tootsie Roll wrapper that was left there? For the generations of Marines who followed, the Marines who fought at the Chosin Reservoir are legends. The sto-ries of fighting hard against over ten divisions of Chinese and even harder against Mother Nature are enough to stir the fires of greatness in anyone’s soul. We are all aware of the climate these brave men faced while fighting there. The most valuable weapon that they could use was the 60mm mortars. With supplies running low an emergency air supply was needed, an urgent request was made for several cases of mortar rounds to be dropped. The code word for these precious mortar rounds was Tootsie Roll. As the Marines were pinned down in the ice and snow with very little food or ammunition the waited for the crates of mortar rounds to show up. There was one prob-lem, the radio operator who received the urgent call did not have a copy of the radio code sheets with him. He knew it was urgent and he got to work right away. I can-not imagine the look on their faces when crates of actual tootsie rolls ended up landing in their area. Soon those hard chargers did what Marines do: they improvised, adapted, and overcame. They learned that the Tootsie Rolls could be easily thawed out and consumed, shaped into patches for bullet holes in fuel tanks, or patching cracked radiators. The sugar and caffeine from the choco-late provided energy to sustain these warriors through the battle and helped stave off starvation since almost all of their other food was frozen solid.

In the face of seemingly unwinnable odds, even the small-est blessing can turn the tides of battle. Most of us would have been so beaten down by all of the things going wrong in life that we would have missed a blessing in dis-guise. God is always there, we must have the faith to see the blessings that we are given and use them to our own success. When it seems that the world is against you, stop and look for what you have been given no matter how small appreciate them with gratitude. Let us pray:

“Supreme Commandant, master of all of time and destiny, we give you thanks for the blessings that we have re-ceived. We pray that you continue to show us mercy through your grace and that we may be able to prosper in your name. We ask that you grant us the wisdom to find the blessings that you give when all else seems lost. These things we pray in your name. Amen.”

DETACHMENT ACTIVITIES

SCUTTLEBUTT March 2017 PAGE 11

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- Everyday Marines injure themselves in a variety of ways, from overexertion during a physical training session to step-ping on a curb the wrong way walking into the Marine Corps Exchange. Sometimes, those injuries are severe and require surgery and long stints on light duty. However, sometimes the injury can be handled with a specific and direct regiment of treatment and exercise. That is where the two Sports Med-icine and Reconditioning Team clinics located on Camp Lejeune and Camp Geiger come into play. “We come into play when someone has a mild to moderate injury, one that, given proper treatment, can be virtually pain free and healed within a couple of weeks,” said Lt. Cmdr. Walter Bew, as-sistant director for muscular and skeletal services. “We work alongside the surgeons and the physical therapists to return Marines to the field as soon as possible.” The two SMART centers have proven to be wildly popular with both the in-jured Marines, and their commands, which are seeing recov-ery times cut drastically. In the previous system, injured Ma-rines were either referred to the rehab clinics, which could take upwards of a month, or were sent to the physical thera-py clinics, which are designed for more serious injuries and post-surgery treatment. “What we really have here is a blend of civilian sports medicine and our military rehabilita-tion clinic,” said Bew. “We have special training in sports medicine, which allows us to initiate treatment and diagnose injuries. We are really a one-stop shop. You can get enrolled here and rehabbed in one day.” The history of the SMART center begins four years ago, when treatment for routine, yet painful injuries such as rolled ankles and strained shoulders were taking too long. The SMART center is the bridge between injury diagnosis and treatment. In the old system, a doctor would diagnose an injury and prescribe a referral to another specialist for treatment. These referrals could take upwards of a month to complete, resulting in Marines on light duty waiting for up to 30 days for an appointment. With the SMART centers, a doctor can diagnose and refer an injured Marine to the local clinic where they will be seen within three days. Another change is the reduced dependence on orthopedist’s, which specialize in the surgery and treatment of severe injuries such as broken bones and torn ligaments. “We act as the intermediary between a general doctor and an orthopedic surgeon,” said Lt. Cmdr. Keith Stuessi, department head of sports medicine. “We free up the surgeons to spend more time on those with serious injuries, while we work on getting those with more manageable injuries back as quickly as pos-sible.” Getting Marines healthy and back into the fight as quickly as possible has been a priority for the hospital ever since the Global War on Terrorism began more than three years ago. “The SMART Centers are critical to restoring the physical fitness of Marines and Sailors so they can perform their mission,” said Navy Capt. Richard C. Welton, com-manding officer of Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune. “Data shows that Marines and Sailors who have early access to the services provided in the SMART Center return to duty soon-er, have fewer surgeries, and fewer separations from the mil-itary.” Since the SMART center opened more than three years ago, approximately 88,000 patients have been treated. And with an estimated 20 patients each day, the centers are

21 Tar Heel Detachment Marines alone with family and friends and Young Marines and family and friends turned out in February to assist Marine

keeping quite busy. However, even with the high number of patients, the center continues their ‘everyone who needs to be seen, gets seen’ policy. “With us helping to take the pressure off the orthopedic surgeons, Marines are getting necessary surgeries quicker,” said Bew. “Getting the Ma-rines back to work is what we do. If a Marine comes in here and needs to get treatment, they will get it. If they don’t have an appointment, it’s on a first come first served basis. But, no matter how many people we have in a day, we will see them all. We want to get these Marines back behind the trigger as quickly as possible” The clinic is an offshoot of the civilian idea of sports medi-cine, according to Stuessi. It’s an offshoot of the idea that Marines are ‘Warrior-Athletes.’ The technicians and doc-tors who work at the clinic are all specially trained to treat and diagnose sports-related injuries common to training Marines. “Our training is based on civilian sports medicine practices,” said Stuessi. “That civilian training fits our needs like a glove. In the civilian world, a sports medicine trainer deals with basketball and football injuries like sprained ankles and twisted knees. The activities we do here, martial arts and long hikes produce the exact same injuries.” It’s this training and the constant battle between maintaining physical readiness and keeping Marines healthy that keeps the SMART center filled with more than 1,100 patient visits a month. “Marines have the hardest job in the world,” said Bew. “It’s our privilege to help them get healthy.”
