UK Marine Industries Growth Strategy By 2020 the UK marine industries will be renowned • for the quality and value for money of its high technology

products, systems and services globally; and

• for its overall and substantial contribution to the UK’s economic, environmental and social well being.

• Through industry and government cooperation produce 4% Compound Annual Growth Rate, leading to Gross Value Added of £25 billion by 2020.

Value of marine and maritime industries • Leisure, commercial, naval, offshore renewable energy and

marine science; • 5000 companies employing 90,000 people and contributing

£3.5 billion of Gross Value Added. • The ports, shipping and maritime business services sectors

employ 263,000 people and contributing £13.8 billion of Gross Value Added.

• Strategic partnerships have been produced for ports and shipping. Professional and business services has an Industry Strategy. All of these will contribute to the growth agenda for the marine and maritime.

Delivery of the strategy • Marine Industries Leadership Council • Working groups on strategy, technology, exports,

regulation, skills, supply chain and image of the sector.

• Development and promotion of the sector through a unified voice; promotion of UK Marine Industries Alliance as a recognised brand within the UK and abroad; Promotion of the marine and maritime sector as a strategic import one compared to other sectors.

• Support for exports in key international markets; • Increased investment in research; • Focus on skills development including graduate training

and increase the number of apprenticeships; • Enhance the leisure boat sector supply chain.

UK Export Strategy • UK Trade & Investment will develop a campaign approach on High

Value Opportunities, for example Brazil, to maximise the opportunities in growth markets

• Marine inward investment – opportunities to invest in sub-sectors of marine navigation, marine equipment, electronics and marine energy

• Encourage significantly more marine SMEs to export

• Assist medium sized and larger companies to win major contracts

• Ensure there is marine participation in ministerial led trade delegations to key markets

• Luxury leisure boats are part of the China ‘GREAT’ campaign

Deliverables • Launched UK Marine Export Strategy in January

2013 • £7 million collaborative research competition in

2013, and a second competition for £5 million in 2014, and £1 million for European ‘MARTEC’ competition. There will be a maritime autonomous systems competition later this year.

• Oxford Economics report on the economic impact of the UK marine sector in January 2013

• Increased coverage by media and greater participation by government ministers.
