LESS TIME IN THE DRYDOCKMORE TIME AT SEA

HEMpADuR 47182

Hempadur 47182 accelerates the coating process by 24 hours

Drydocking is expensive for any vessel. There are labour and paint costs, and then there’s the biggest expense: the business you lose every day your ship is stuck in the dock.

Hempadur 47182 saves money by cutting up to 24 hours off your drydocking time. It does this thanks to a new anticorrosive, highsolids formula that eliminates the need for a second coat of primer. The result? Less time idle and more time at sea – where your ship can generate revenue.

One less coat also means lower labour and material costs. Add that to the money you’ll save by getting your ship back to sea sooner, and you have a tiecoat that delivers a very fast return on investment.

25% less solvent emissionsYour customers face growing demands for ecoaccountability throughout their supply chains – including transport. With its highsolids formula, Hempadur 47182 slashes solvent emissions by 25% – meaning better eco performance for you and your customers.

Formulated for flexibilityFor shipyards, flexibility is a key competitive parameter. While other tiecoats demand overcoating within days, Hempadur 47182 has been formulated to extend the overcoating window and give shipyards the flexibility they demand.

HEMPADUR 47182replaces secondcoat of primer.

Dutch carrier has long historyof success with Globic NCt

Hempel is the world’s only paint supplier to reinforce antifouling systems with microfibre technology

Producing a topperforming antifouling is a balancing act, where needs for thickness, effectiveness, polishing and mechanical strength sometimes conflict with each other. In particular, application of high dry film thicknesses per coat has been known to create mechanical stresses that lead to cracking.

To enhance the mechanical strength of Hempel’s antifoulings, we use a patented microfibre technology that minimises cracking and peeling. Unlike plasticisers, microfibres have no effect on polishing or performance. Years of practical experience have confirmed that the microfibre reinforcement in the antifoulings works just like the steel reinforcement in concrete, adding strength and elasticity.

Fibres in antifouling. To preserve surface smoothness, the fibres run parallel to the surface.

Anthony Veder, a Rotterdambased leader in liquefied gas transport, has chosen Hempel’s GLOBIC NCT antifouling based on years of positive experience with the proven hull coating.

“For Anthony Veder, the environment is a top priority, and we have seen that Globic NCT enables us to save fuel and reduce our CO2 emissions throughout the service interval,” a company official says.

The key, according to Anthony Veder, is Globic NCT’s superior selfpolishing and selfsmoothening properties. And the results? “It gives us greater flexibility and reliability, and this has enabled us to prolong our service intervals, reduce fuel costs and further polish our reputation on the environment,” the official concludes.

Ask a coating advisorQ: What is a coating advisor’s most important

role in the docking process?

A: Basically, our main role is to determine how well the yard is doing its job, and whether they are complying with verbal agreements and written specifications. We do this by providing advice on how to meet specifications and agreements, performing inspections to ensure compliance, and preparing reports on our findings.

This is our main job, but our work also includes taking part in early project planning with the owner and contractors to help make sure that paint specifications and workflows are optimised from the start. We help to assess the capacity and skills of subcontractors’

capacity, and we assist with paint ordering to make sure the right

quantities are procured.

We also help ensure that all the processes are managed

effectively, so that paint spe ci fications are adhered to,

consumption stays in line with budgets, and no unnecessary

delays affect the product schedule. We address any instan ces of noncompliance and follow up on corrective measures. And we pro vide all final project documentation.

SPANISH NAVY APPLIES HEMPASIL X3 TO A NEW SERIES OF MILITARY VESSELSIn July 2011, the first of four “Meteoro” vessels was delivered to the Spanish Navy, coated with HEMPASIL X3. A new type of military vessel, Meteoro is small enough to make it perfect for coastal and antipiracy operations. X3 was chosen for its special Hydrogel properties that provide excellent antifouling performance even when a vessel is idle.

Hempel rolls out a new standard for assessing marine coating performance

What is success if it can’t be measured?

When Hempel launched HEMPASIL X3 in 2008, we were so confident in this breakthrough product, we became the world’s first marine coating supplier to offer a fuelsavings guarantee. To help customers accurately measure their fuel savings, we helped put technology in place that would objectively measure how much fuel the vessel saved after coating with X3.

Now, we are rolling out a new standard for evaluating antifouling performance – the Antifouling Performance Index, or API.

putting a number on foulingAPI is a numerical method for assessing the performance of an antifouling on a scale of 1 to 100. The index takes three main types of fouling into account: slime, algae and animals. Each of these is included in the calculation, based on its observed appearance on the surface analysed.

The index can be used on real vessels, which are inspected during drydockings, after full service periods or in diving inspections while the vessel is in service. It can also be used to evaluate panels during testing in fouling control laboratories, where real life conditions are simulated.

Based on an AStM International normHempel’s Antifouling Performance Index is based on ASTM D699005, a standard practice for evaluating biofouling resistance and physical performance of marine coating systems.

Although we developed the index primarily to measure and improve the performance of our own coatings, we believe that measurable performance is the way forward for the entire coatings industry.

Antifouling and fouling release both serve the same purpose – to prevent fouling on vessel hulls. But they get the job done in different ways. The better you understand the differences between antifouling and fouling release, the better prepared you’ll be to make the right choice for your vessel.

Antifouling vs. fouling release

Get the facts straight on how antifoulings compare with fouling release systems

COMpARISON

Antifouling

Antifouling works by releasing biocides in a controlled manner to prevent fouling organisms from attaching to the hull.

Upon exposure to water, the top layer of the coating is dissolved, and the biocides “leach” to the coating surface, where they keep biofouling organisms away. When the biocides have been depleted, the empty binder layer at the surface is hydrolysed by seawater and gradually polished away to reveal a smooth new active layer.

This continuous cycle of selfpolishing and leaching keeps the antifouling coating clean.

With antifoulings, upfront costs are relatively low, but so is the return on investment, measured over the vessel’s docking period.

This is due to higher fuel consumption resulting from a coating surface that is rougher than the surface provided by fouling release systems. There are, however, differences in grades of antifouling, with the highergrade products delivering a faster ROI.

Antifoulings can be specified for any service parameter. Most are available in a range of polishing rates, depending on the vessel’s trading pattern.

The number of coats of antifouling required depends on the vessel’s trading parameters.

An applied specification is valid for selected service parameters only. If these change (for instance, if the vessel slow steams or is laid up), the antifouling might not be able to prevent fouling.

Antifouling technology is well known and easy to apply. It can be applied at any dock in the world.

What’s more, its drying properties enable it to be applied in any temperature.

Vessels coated with an antifouling must be fully recoated after the service period, as the antifouling will have been polished away by the end of the period.

How it works

What it costs

Which vessels

How it’s specified

How it’s applied

How it’s recoated

Fouling release

Unlike antifouling, fouling release systems don’t rely on biocides.

Fouling release systems normally work by creating a smooth nonstick surface on the hull.

This makes it difficult for fouling organisms to attach to the hull and easy for them to be removed by the drag of the water when the vessel is in motion.

Fouling release coatings entail higher upfront costs, but they deliver a higher return on investment.

The relatively high ROI resulting in less friction from fuel savings made possible by the smoother surface (and this less friction) that fouling release systems provide.

To be suitable for coating with a fouling release system, a vessel needs to sail at 8 knots or more and have an activity rate of at least 50%*.

With fouling release systems, specification is independent of the vessel’s service parameters, and only one topcoat is needed for 60 months protection.

Dedicated spray equipment is required to apply a fouling release system, but most yards nowadays are fully able to handle the job. Certain limitations apply regarding application in low temperatures.

After a fiveyear docking interval, a fouling release coating can be overcoated with a new coat.

This reduces the cost of the second docking.

*This is the case for Hempel’s Hempasil X3 other FR systems have other requirements

RECONSTRUCTING AN OFFSHORE CONSTRUCTION VESSEL

CASE StORY

Hempel helps CROATIA’S ZAFIRO MARINE turn the M/V SAMPSON into new flagship

About the vessel

Sampson is a class-leading offshore/subsea construction vessel.

This multi-functional vessel is equipped with class 3 dynamic

positioning and a full field development spread including a 1600mt

heavylift slewing crane, S-Lay pipelay spread and a subsea active

heave compensated crane. The vessel also has substantial

accommodation in the form of 300 high-quality berths.

When CEMEX Mexico needed to recoat one of its vessels, the global supplier of cement, readymix concrete, aggregates and related building materials again turned to Hempel for its coating solutions.

Carried out at the Talleres Navales del Golfo shipyard in Veracruz, this project was the second Hempel has been involved in for CEMEX. As the company operates its own fleet of vessels, we hope these first two projects will be the start of a longlasting relationship between Hempel and CEMEX Mexico.

In October of 2011, the M/V SAMPSON by Zafiro Marine arrived at Viktor Lenac shipyard for the reconstruction job. The M/V SAMPSON is one of two Offshore Construction Vessels in the Zafiro Marine fleet. Sampson has been designed with true combination capabilities in mind. With a 1600t fully revolving crane, deepwater SLay pipelay system and a dedicated 200t subsea AHC crane she is a truly multifunctional vessel and the highest specification vessel in the Zafiro fleet. The reconstruction job which is in progress, consists of assembling new sections on the main deck. Those sections include a pipe line tunnel, as pipe laying will be a main purpose.
