What is topography?

• The detailed charting of the features of an area; heights,

depth, & shapes of the surface of an area.

HydrosphereEarth’s ocean covers more than 70%, or nearly 3/4, of our

planet.

The continents are used as boundaries to section the one great

ocean into five smaller oceans.

HydrosphereOceans:

HydrosphereSeas are often partially, or even totally, enclosed by land.

Arabian Sea

Mediterranean Sea

North Sea

China Sea

Sea of Japan

Black Sea

Red Sea

Caribbean Sea

Bering Sea

Tasmanian Sea

HydrosphereAs far back as 1,500 years, sailors & navigators were exploring

& charting the ocean.

Scientists continue to study & expand our understanding of the

ocean & its organisms.

HydrosphereWe’ve used the ocean’s resources to support our existence.

• Travel from one landlocked region to another.

• The enjoyment we get from sailing across its waves &

swimming among its miraculous variety of marine life.

HydrosphereScientists have needed to develop special equipment to explore

& measure the ocean:

The Resolution:

• A well known drilling ship capable of collecting samples from

the bottom of the ocean.

HydrosphereThe Alvin:

• Tiny submarine designed to withstand pressure changes at >

4,000 meters.

• Equipped with robotic arms to take bottom samples & collect

marine specimens.

• Also contains a television & photography equipment.

• Unmanned sled-like submersible.

• Contains a camera, lights, & a radar.

HydrosphereScience of oceanography.

The study of the ocean truly became a science in 1855.

• Matthew Fontaine Maury published his research on the

physical features of the ocean.

The British navy launched the H.M.S. Challenger in 1872.

• Warship remodeled to house a laboratory to study the ocean.

• Collected & recorded information on the ocean’s depth, water

temperature, water & sediment samples, currents, & plant &

animal species.

HydrosphereOceanographers group themselves according to their interests:

• Geological oceanographers

• Chemical oceanographers

• Biological oceanographers

• Physical oceanographers

HydrosphereSome oceanographers:

• Search for potential medicines to cure diseases.

• Study ways to predict & even slow the development of

hurricanes & other adverse weather conditions.

• Work to harness the power of the ocean for use as energy.

• Study how to limit our pollution of the seas & create healthy

relationship between human life & marine life.

HydrosphereWhy Study the Ocean?

Climate & weather

• Precipitation from evaporated ocean water.

• Weather on land affected by ocean temperatures.

Ocean as a resource

• Source of medicines.

• Source of chemicals such as sodium chloride (NaCl),

magnesium, & bromine.

• Renewable source of energy; thermal energy & tidal energy.

HydrosphereWhy Study the Ocean?

Understanding the chemical, physical, & biological aspects of

the ocean, we can learn to properly manage marine resources.

Formative AssessmentGrab a ChromeBook from the cart.

• Be sure to grab the number that corresponds to the number

on your desk.

Complete the formative assessment “Unit_01 Hydrosphere

Practice #1” on your own.

• No notes

• This will not affect your grade, it is a measure of what you

currently know about Meiosis.

• This will inform you & I about what areas we need to focus on

for Wednesday’s summative assessment.
