Don Zane Phillips

Mariposa Native Donald Zane Phillips

(AKA: Murph) age 72, died peacefully in his sleep

February 12, 2018, surrounded by family and friends

after an evening celebrating his life through fellowship,

food, song and prayer, putting closure to his short but

well fought battle with liver cancer.

Don was born April 6, 1946 to parents Don and

Jean Phillips of Bootjack California (Mariposa County).

A student of the historic Darrah School house before

attending and Graduating Mariposa County High School

class of 1964. “Murph” as he was known by friends and

family developed a solid work ethic on the family

homestead, supporting his father’s back country

packing/guide service, tending to the livestock,

equipment and camps as necessary, while also acquiring

his AA Degree in Business from Merced College.

Hearing the call to duty during Vietnam Don

joined the Army, while on leave he returned to

Mariposa to marry his lifelong love Loretta Shaw. After

serving a tour of duty in South East Asia he returned to

Los Angeles where he finished his commitment to the

Army at the LA induction center. Los Angeles was a

fun and exciting place, but not where the young

Mariposa man wanted to start and raise a family, so

they returned to Bootjack, and settled on the family

homestead (established Late 1800’s).

Back in the familiar hills of Mariposa, Don

once again became an active part of the community.

Not only holding multiple seats in local government

(County Treasurers office 1971-1978, County

Treasurer/Tax Collector 1978-2003, County Clerk

1998-2003, but also as a community leader as an

active member of the Mariposa Masonic Lodge #24

(Holding all the chairs), The American Legion, The

Veterans of Foreign War, he also dedicated his free

time to volunteer work within the Mariposa Fish and

Game (Past President), Coach and Board Member of

Mariposa Youth Soccer, Mariposa Mountain Riders

(Lifetime Member), Mariposa Wagon Train (Past

Wagon Master), Board Member John C. Freemont

Hospital, Bootjack Volunteer Fire Department Pancake

Breakfast, Several capacity’s at The Grove Church

including First Impressions Leader to name just a few.

In addition to his regular community activities, Don

opened his home & family to foster several stray

Mariposa boys during their time of need. Don believed

deeply to be a part of a community you must give back

to that community, which he did physically,

emotionally and financially. His hobbies included

Golf, Horses, Camping and most importantly

spending quality time with friends and family.

Don is survived by his wife of 52 years Loretta

Phillips, Daughter Dayna M. Robinson (Husband Dan,

Sons Tristen & Morgan), Son Donald M. Phillips

“Marc” (Wife Barbara, Sons Branden, Justin, Kyle

(Wife Rachael & Newborn Great Granddaughter

Riatta), Hayden, his Mother Jean Holmes (Phillips),

Brother Emmet Phillips, his horse Cherokee and Dog

Doc. Don was preceded in death by his Father Don M.

Phillips and Step Father Charlie Holmes.

“Murph” requested there not be any formal

services held, the family will honor that request; if you

knew him, take a moment to remember him as he was

at his best, and know that if you were a friend, he is

smiling down at you waiting to greet you again

someday. In lieu of flowers please donate to one of

the following : Bootjack Volunteer Fire Department

or The Grove Church in Ahwahnee. Submitted by

Mariposa Mountain Rider’s FIRST 2018 TRAIL RIDE

April 28, 2018

LONG ‘S MARIPOSA RANCH

4333 OLD HIGHWAY, MARIPOSA

PROMPTLY RIDING OUT AT 10:00AM!

Expect the ride to be about 3 to 3 1/2 hrs. Pack yourself a lunch for when we take a break half way through the ride. This ride is an annual favorite of many MMR members. With mostly single track trails, rolling hills, studded with lots of oak trees,

and creeks. Bring your camera as you will experience some great views and cattle...yes, they do roam throughout the ranch. Also, springtime means we can enjoy the beauty of the fresh bloomed wildflowers.

DIRECTIONS:

From Mariposa & Oakhurst:

Take Hwy 49 South to Old Highway. Proceed approximately 3.3 miles to the main ranch entrance on your right. If you reach the intersection of Old Highway/Buckeye/Yaqui Gulch...you’ve gone too far! Turn right onto the ranch and follow the *driveway past the main house (on the right). You will come to a gate. Pass through the gate and be sure to close that gate once you’ve driven through as there may be roaming cattle! Once through the gate proceed past the shop and park in the grassy meadow near old truck trailers

not far from an occupied mobile home.

*PLEASE DRIVE SLOWER THAN 5 MILES PER HOUR ALONG THE DRIVEWAY... WE DO NOT WANT TO MAKE DUST FOR THEHOUSES.

From Merced:

Take Hwy 140 towards Mariposa. Turn right on Yaqui Gulch Road, proceed for about 3.2 miles to Old Highway. Turn left and go About .6 mile to the ranch entrance on your left. Turn left onto the ranch and follow the *driveway past the main house (on the right).

You will come to a gate. Be sure to close that gate once you’ve driven through as there may be roaming cattle! Once through the gate proceed past the shop and park in the grassy meadow near old truck trailers not far from an occupied mobile home.

*PLEASE DRIVE SLOWER THAN 5 MILES PER HOUR ALONG THE DRIVEWAY... WE DO NOT WANT TO MAKE DUST FOR THEHOUSES.

VERY IMPORTANT! PLEASE NOTE:

Because there may be cattle that will possibly come to your truck and trailers while we are out riding... DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING HOOKED OR TIED TO THE OUTSIDEOF YOUR TRAILERS (I.e. HALTERS, FEED BAGS, LEAD

ROPES, ETC.) NOR LEAVE ANYTHING IN THE BED OF YOUR TRUCK (SUCH AS ANY FEED) THAT THE CATTLE MAY GET INTO...AND THEY WILL!!!

We want this ride to be a positive and enjoyable experience for you.Looking forward to seeing you there!
