H. P. CLIMBING HAMMOCK
This studio assignment required us to design and construct a prototype of a furniture piece that could suit a child and an adult. The H.P. Climbing Hammock serves as a fun, climbing experience for children, and a relaxing hammock for adults. This hammock gets its name from the shape, hyperbolic paraboloid, which is the shape of the base of this hammock. The prototype of this model was made at quarter scale using wooden dowels and rope.

TESSELLATION CREATION
4
The design challenge for this project was to create a conceptual toy. The process of making this toy began with sketching and making models of ideations. From there I decided that I wanted to make a wooden puzzle that the user could customize. During my developmental process I experimented with tessellations, the name origin of the puzzle. I wanted this toy to be personal for each user so I stained one side of the pieces a light shade, and the other side a darker shade allowing the user to create his/her
own puzzle design.

“Tessellation Creation is a puzzle that never stays the same. Every piece has a lighter shade on one side and a darker shade on the other. You can change the design of the puzzle by flipping the pieces over and placing them into the frame. When you are done with your creation, put it on display or take it
apart and do it again!”

For this project I was required to utilize the same concept from my previous toy design to make a household object. In my Tessellation creation puzzle, I used the concept of tessellation joinery which stays the same, but also allows for change in the design and use of the product. After sketching and making ideation models, I decided to make candle holders that can be stacked or separated. When stacked, they give the illusion of being
connected because the weaving creates a tessellation pattern that unifies them.
6
These Tessellation candle holders come in a set of three with three flameless candles included. Although real candles won’t work (fire hazard) for these holders, battery powered candles are used to give off similar dim lighting. This project gave me a greater sense of
form, joinery techniques, and weaving techniques.

This particular design challenge was assigned to me and my fellow classmates by Steelcase. The task was to design NEXT University, a two-story higher-education facility that strives to enforce active learning environments in every useable space. The requirements to enter in this annual design challenge were: 3-5 rendered perspectives, a logo, a reflected ceiling plan, alternative furniture layouts, and elevation views. A large portion of the
furniture used had to be manufactured by Steelcase.

While working on this project I learned the value of designing spaces around the needs and wants of the clients, which in this case was Steelcase and the potential students of NEXT University. I also learned about active learning spaces and ways to design commercial spaces that benefit all types of occupants. This project significantly improved my knowledge of
Revit and my rendering skills.

Because this is a transitional home, I planned on having built-ins in almost every room to eliminate the need for the residents to buy a lot of furniture. A challenge I faced with this assignment was designing around the existing parame-ters, such as the exterior walls, windows and plumbing. To overcome this I designed the space with an open concept to make the space appear larger. I also added an ample amount
of lighting to make up for the lack of natural lighting.
Photography, like design, is a passion of mine that I would like to incorporate into my future career path. I have been practicing freelance portrait photography since 2012. My photography experience includes, senior portraits, nature, products, events, family portraits, and more. Working with clients has given me a better outlook on dealing with the
wants and needs of others while expressing my creativity.

Change Purse is a non-profit organization that sells donated purses to raise money and awareness for victims of sex-trafficking. Below, are products that I have
photographed for Change Purse’s online store.
These are photographs I took of spaces during tours of both North Carolina State University and Elon University.

These photographs feature some of the purses and accesories on Change Purse’s online website. I chose to capture these shots with
models to show off the purses in a practical way.

MISSION STATEMENT
Through my exploration with design, I have found that I am most interested in designing residential products and furniture. I have a strong sense of detail and craft, and I enjoy designing hand-made items. My signature style is designing dynamic products that serve multiple functions depending on the user’s wants or needs. I mostly enjoy working with wood and other various sustainable materials. My passion for drawing and photography has helped me develop the skills I need to create good design. As a designer, I am constantly exploring new mediums and
learning new software to enhance my skills.
