YEAR 12‘Your education is a dress rehearsal for a life that is yours to lead’

As we farewell Year 12 this week we congratulate them on being our first MCCP Year 12 cohort and we are very proud of them. They are here today as the precipice of the future. It is not a distant reality anymore. They began high school as children 6 years ago and they are leaving as young adults. We wish them all the very best of luck in whatever they decide to do, work, university, TAFE or travel, ultimately they will each journey their own path with their own story.

This week has been very busy with the end of their formal class lessons, Year 12 breakfast at Club Central Hurstville, Final whole college Assembly at Hurstville Civic Centre, Graduation Mass, Graduation Awards ceremony and dinner at the Conca Dora Lounge, and finally the formal at Doltone House at Pyrmont. An enormous amount of preparation went into the organisation of these events and we would like to especially thank the many staff who organised these outstanding celebrations. Special thanks must also go to the students who displayed exceptional leadership and creativity. Special mention to Chris Spyrou, James Robson, Sam Mattheos and Ryan Morgan.

The graduation certificate that Year 12 will receive in their hands this week is really just a learner’s permit for the rest of the drive through life. Remember, you don’t have to be smarter than the next person; all you have to do is be willing to work harder than the next person.

Well, we may not all have the power to inspire the entire world to strive for success, but we do have the power to try to achieve it for ourselves - To Aspire to be Inspired. Our challenge to each Year 12 student is to do all that you can do to reach your full potential. If each of the Year 12 students in this graduating class of 2016 is able to do that, just imagine the effect that would have. The future is truly in your hands, so let’s make the most of it.

God BlessMr Ray Martin and Mrs Carmelina Eussen

YEAR 12 GRADUATION MASSOn Wednesday 21 September the College community gathered at St Declan’s Penshurst to celebrate the Graduation Mass for the Class of 2016. It was a wonderful ceremony full of prayerful reflection and uplifting singing throughout. The Class of 2016 processed into the Church to commence the Mass. This occasion also marked the final time that Fr John will preside at a College Mass as he begins his retirement. Mr Martin acknowledged Fr John’s outstanding contribution to the life of the College during the past 16 years and also his commitment to the parish of St Declan’s. Br Tony along with the Choir, Year 11 and the Class of 2016 led those gathered in a rousing rendition of the Sub Tuum and School Song to conclude a memorable moment for all present.

On Tuesday 20 September Year 12 celebrated in style with their Final Assembly at the Hurstville Entertainment Centre. Celebrating the numerous achievements and contributions of our community is an important part of what makes us a Marist school, as we continue to strive in everything we do. Over the course of the Final Assembly the College acknowledged our new student leadership group for 2017 with a formal leadership changeover ceremony - a passing on of our faith tradition. Those present were also entertained by the College Band and Class of 2016 as they reflected on their time during their six years at the College. We wish them well for the future.

YEAR 8 HISTORY INCURSIONOn Friday 9 September, Year 8 experienced a unique opportunity to delve into the world of Medieval Europe and Japan. The incursion was conducted by Living History Australia and provided a valuable experience for our History classes to consolidate, and extend upon, what they have learnt in class. Our students gained an insight into the lives of different classes of people such as knights, peasants and nobles; crime and punishment; and weapons and armoury used in this period of time.

There is an upcoming event for Medieval Europe enthusiasts’ – the St Ives Medieval Fair, which some students have expressed an interest in attending in their own time. It runs from September 24th - 25th and comes with the recommendation of the Living History group. Details can be found at the following website for those who may be interested: http://stivesmedievalfaire.com.au/

Miss Lydia CurisYear 8 History Teacher

Over the course of three days in Term 3, six students from Year 9 and 10 joined other Gifted and Talented students for the STARS (Science Thinking and Research Skills) Challenge. The students travelled to Marcellin College Randwick, where they collaborated with students from other schools, learning to create deep inquiry-based questions, perform literature reviews and propose creative solutions to current social and environmental problems.

The theme for this year was ‘Transportation in the 21st Century’, specifically looking at transport options such as autonomous cars (driverless), solar powered cars, Tesla electric cars and maglev trains. The Year 9 group, composed of Edward El-Jalkh, John Hefka, Ross Green and Daniel Canduci, researched the use of Straddle Buses, which are a means of public transportation that span the width of the road and allow traffic to pass through underneath them. These students created a video summarising how these buses work and the potential impacts of their use.

Our two Year 10 students. Zac Pitkethley and Christopher Kesoglou, created a video encompassing the technological implementations in autonomous cars to reduce traffic congestion. They researched the scientific concepts involved in the use of autonomous cars and how these could be beneficial in preventing the common causes of traffic congestion.

In the final session, the students met Scott Youlton who is currently studying Molecular Biology at the Garvan Institute and were given the opportunity to listen to Scott present the speech that awarded him the winner of the 3-minute Thesis Competition.

Overall, the STARS Challenge was a wonderful experience and I commend the students for the enthusiasm, dedication and passion they displayed throughout all three days. The videos they created will be eligible to enter into next year’s Eureka Science Competition. This video competition is open to any students who is interested in communicating a scientific principle in an engaging way. Please speak to your science teacher for more information.

Thank you to Mr Kon Georgiadis who drove the team to Randwick for each of our Challenge days.

SCC FOOTBALLYEAR 7As a team of such enthusiastic girls, I am so proud to announce that the Year 7 Girls SCC Soccer team have made history! Being the first girls at Marist Catholic College to bring a trophy home to celebrate such a fantastic final win!

Winning our semi-final against Mount Saint Joseph 1-0 to a penalty taken by Lainey Grech, it was a tough game! All 15 girls have made such great improvement over the past 9 weeks, building strong friendships and even better soccer skills. On Thursday the 22nd of September our girls turned up in fine form ready for a tough match against Bethany College, held at Kinch Reserve, Condell Park. The match was a huge test of endurance, held to a nil all draw at the end of normal time. With the golden-goal extra time awaiting commencement, the girls were fired up by Coach Miss Gabriella Constantinou, Principal Mr Ray Martin and Sports Co-ordinator Mr Paul Burg. With a whole team of Year 7 and 8 supporters on the sidelines, the game was put to an end with a brilliant free kick taken by Lara Savet-Buck (7-6). The girls were dancing, screaming and celebrating their victory! Their sportsmanship and dedication to fairness and to their team mates is to be congratulated. Special thanks to Dion Taylor and Leon Efthimiadis of Year 12 for giving up their time to help the girls at training and to be with them on game day!

I am so very proud to have been part of such an amazing team of girls. They have been such a pleasure to work with and a joy to be around!

Miss Gabriella Constantinou - CoachINTERMEDIATE

In the final game of the regular season, the team came prepared to play against St Charbel’s College. The girls all played a great game of soccer and celebrated in their own special way when Melissa Novevski scored in the 19th minute - acrobatic tumbling up the field. Our game was sadly interrupted by a severe injury to Abbie Hayes’ right knee. The happy news is that, while still on crutches, Abbie will be OK. Unfortunately, the team didn’t make it into the finals this year but all the girls deserve a huge congratulations for their hard work this season.

Not the end to the season we had hoped for, however the girls did come home strong, even if the scoreboard didn’t support this. Unfortunately we had a number of illnesses and injuries in the last few games which meant we were often dependent on six players. Nevertheless, each girl played strong, supporting each other both on and off the court. I am extremely proud of the way the girls have played this season, as it was definitely a step up from the Year 7 competition in which we were finalists last year. Each player gave 100% on the court, from those who have been playing for many years to those for whom this was their debut season. Every player improved on their game, but most importantly they improved as a team, playing and training as a cohesive unit. I am looking forward to next year, as I believe the combined Year 7 and 8 team will be formidable.

I’d like to thank Don Qiu, Stephen Den and Isaac Sartor for the invaluable support that they have given both basketball teams this term, showing up each week without fail to score for us. It was much appreciated!

Grand Final: MCCp 14 were defeated by MSJ 49

A fantastic season has come to the end with the result not beening our desired outcom. I am proud to say the girls put in an outstanding performance on Thursday and truly demonstrated the spirit of Marist Catholic College. We knew going into the Grand Final that we were the strong underdogs, but the girls put in 110% till the final whistle. I can successfully say we now have a team of 9 Basketballer’s rather than Netballer’s. The girls have developed as individuals and as a team throughout this whole season, and I truly look forward to next year hopefully knocking MSJ of their perch.

A big thank you goes out to Mr Fisher and Ms Thompson for all their help and support throughout the season, without them we could not have converted so many Netballer’s to Basketballer’s. Finally, thank you to the parents who have supported the girls throughout the season, it is always so enjoyable to have a cheer squad who come to every game. Next year is going to be a good one!!!
