Te wiki o te Reo MaoriKia Kaha Te Reo Māori was the theme of this year’s Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. Our Marist whanau wholeheartedly took part in the activities organised embracing the opportunity to learn more about Te Reo and Tikanga. The celebrations started at 12pm on Monday when we joined thousands of others in the country in the Māori Language Moment. Throughout the week we sang many waiata, played Māori games and Kahoot quizzes, learnt our pepeha and took part in competitions. Our Kapa Haka group gave a concert at Marist Primary, while socially distancing.

Our special thanks to Whaea Jane, Matua Terry’s wife who taught us how to weave beautiful flowers from flax and made delicious Parāoa Parai, Māori fried bread for the staff on Friday.

Although Te Wiki is coming to an end for another year, we encourage everyone to keep learning and using their Te Reo. As New Zealanders, it is our taonga and we are all responsible for making sure it will not only survive but will thrive.

On Wednesday 16th Break 2, Marist students joined with Whaea Jane (Matua Terry’s partner) to learn how to make some beautiful roses made from flax for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. We were very grateful to have this opportunity as Whaea Jane was so skilled with flax-making. The students ended up making around a dozen flax roses all together. Thanks Whaea Jane!

Emily Seal (Yr 10)

The Kapa Haka group had a great time preparing and performing for Marist Primary for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. We felt privileged singing our favourite songs to our little brothers and sisters. Making fried bread was really fun and seeing all the staff with their happy faces brought smiles to ours. Kia ora Whaea Jane for sharing your culture with us along with Matua Terry and to Whaea Viki Jonas for all your help with our Kapa Haka.

Sophie Sorenson (Yr 10)

Gateway Work Experience in Tourism! Two Year 13 students were scheduled to complete a Gateway Programme in tourism with Air NZ at the Auckland Airport domestic terminal in the April holidays … until Covid-19 arrived and killed that plan. With the borders closed, lockdowns, and greatly reduced flights, Air NZ cancelled all plans for work experience programmes for the foreseeable future, and there are no international tourists touring NZ at present. This posed a significant problem for how these students could still gain meaningful work experience. Fortunately an attraction close to the airport and open to tourists became an option – Butterfly Creek offered to host Muriel and Sarai for work experience in the July holidays. It was a great opportunity for them to get to work with tourists in an interesting environment. When I visited them they were very excited to show me around the attraction and demonstrate how much they had learned about it.

Jenni Catley, Gateway Coordinator

“I was disappointed when I heard that we couldn’t work with Air New Zealand because I was looking forward to it but it was good to go to Butterfly Creek instead, the people were nice and we had a lot of fun.” Sarai Time-Matafeo“Working at Butterfly Creek was fun, I gained a lot of experience from it. It was nice that I knew some of the girls who work there because they used to go to Marist.” Muriel D’Cruz

Year 10 Outdoor Education Mountain Biking day The class had an epic day out at Woodhill mountain biking, while demonstrating their responsible behaviours. They had a great attitude and showed resilience with the harder courses. So proud of their effort!

Swimfit! Our third session of swimfit was a hard one! The girls pushed themselves to keep going, and we are seeing improvements each week. It’s been a great success so far.
