Pirates hijacked the MT FAIRCHEM BOGEY, a Marshall Island flagged and Indian owned tanker, with a crew of 21 Indians on 20 August 2011.

Hijacked while it was anchored within the port of Salalah, Oman.

Hijacking of the MT Fairchem Bogey from the anchorage at Salalah (within Oman's Territorial Waters) confirms the increased capacity of the pirates.

Current Military Update        The South West Monsoon has weakened in the Gulf of Aden and the area is now conducive for small boat operations. More attacks are likely in areas of calmer weather like closer to the straits of Bab-el-Mandeb and into the Red Sea. Monsoon conditions have also weakened over the eastern Indian Ocean and calmer weather is predicted. Areas of concern remain the Southern Red Sea, Bab-el-Mandeb, Gulf of Aden and the Somalia Basin.

MT POLAR, Greek owned and Panama flagged tanker, was hijacked on 30 October 2010 with a crew of 23.

Released on 26 Aug. 2011 after payment of ransom. Cargo (marine fuel oil) used to power other vessels. Ran the most mother ship operations; and broke the record for furthest movement out to the northeast and southeast.

Up to 50 pirates on board at one time, as well as 10 skiffs; served as a forward operating base and had mid-level leadership on board.

NCIS (US Naval Criminal Investigation Service) conducted the Crime Scene Investigation (including debriefing of crew members) in Salalah, Oman (the port of refuge), on 29-31 Aug. 2011
