Fire control & weapon systemsUltra is a supplier of specialist navalelectro-optical (EO) surveillance andfire control systems. Ultra providesprecision EO tracking for gun calibresup to 127mm and supports variousfire control modes. Ultra’s productsare deployed on a wide range ofships, from small patrol vessels toaircraft carriers. Ultra has extensiveexperience of designing,manufacturing and integratingsafety-critical weapon interfacemanagement systems. SUBMARINE RFCOMMUNICATIONSUltra is a world leader in underwateracoustic communications technology.The Group’s offerings include a familyof expendable communicationsbuoys, which enable submarines toremain at tactical postures, yetprovide robust and sustained one-way and two-way communications.Ultra’s product range also includesunderwater telephones, advancedacoustic communications sonar,situational awareness buoys,emergency rescue beacons, tetheredand untethered designs for tacticaland gateway missions and SubmarineEmergency Position-Indicating RadioBeacons (SEPIRB). The SEPIRB is aradio signalling device used forlocating a submarine in distress.

MAGNETO-INDUCTIVEUNDERWATER COMMUNICATION SYSTEMUltra’s magneto-inductive (MI)technology employs quasi-staticmagnetic fields as a wireless channelfor signalling, communications, and

navigation. The unique physicalproperties of the magneto-inductivechannel enable it to operate throughalmost any medium including ice,rock, soil, water, and concrete. Ultra’sDiverCOMM is a state-of-the artwireless diver communication systemthat provides secure, short-range,two-way voice communicationsbetween divers in the mostchallenging underwaterenvironments. Operable in both freshand salt water, DiverCOMM offerssuperior performance and reliability inacoustically noisy environments,confined spaces and in areas wherephysical occlusions can interfere withcommunications. The system is highlysuited for diving operations in thelittorals, shallow water, surf zone,waterways, harbours and ports. TheMI channel produces no far field (RF)emissions, thereby eliminating thepossibility of detection outside of theoperating area. This contributes tothe MI channel’s high resilience toconventional countermeasures andprovides low probability of interceptduring covert operations.

RADIATION DETECTION AND MONITORING FOR SHIPSAND SUBMARINESUltra provides an established modularradiation monitoring system for navalvessels, which can be configured tosuit a wide range of different shipsand applications. It providescontinuous monitoring of theradiological threat and ensures thatships’ crews have minimum exposureto any radiation hazard.

COMBAT MANAGEMENT SYSTEMSUltra’s modern integrated approach tonaval Command and Control (C2)and combat management systemsoffers numerous benefits to naviesand coastguards worldwide, in termsof operational capability, flexibilityand through-life costs. Ultra’s systemsenable effective and seamlessintegration of weapon systems, sensors(electro-optic, radar, navigation,meteorological, identification friendor foe, automatic identification systemand electronic support measure), decoysystems and multi-function consoles,in order to ensure maximumoperational effectiveness to combatthe ever-evolving threat.

Ultra has developed the OSIRIS®

combat and mission managementsystem, a highly capable, cost-effectivesolution, readily configurable for anynaval ship. Designed on openarchitecture principles, OSIRIS® ismodular and scalable, enablingintegration of selected sub-systemsinto one rugged, reliable and userfriendly multi-function system.Customer-specific system solutionscan range from a simple situationalawareness and self-defence systemfor a coastal patrol craft, through toa turn-key integrated Command,Control, Communications, Computers,Intelligence, Surveillance andReconnaissance (C4ISR,implementation for a majorcombatant platform. Ultra’s navigationdata distribution systems are inservice with many of the world’snavies, providing accurate low-latencynavigation and meteorological data formultiple time-critical ship’s systems,such as combat management systemsand weaponry. They are based onstate-of-the-art, ruggedised, COTShardware modules and proven, flexiblesoftware applications.

To support the naval C2 combat andnavigation management systems,Ultra has worked with customers todevelop Tactical Local Area Networks(TaLAN), which can link sensors,weapon systems, defensive suites andcombat management systems. NUCLEAR INSTRUMENTATIONAND CONTROL Ultra has been supplying nuclearqualified temperature sensors,thermowells and transmitters,pressure transmitters and fibre-opticmodems for more than threedecades. The Group’s intense focuson quality and reliability hascontributed to its recognition as aglobal leader in these technologiesand its products have been qualifiedfor use in all of the leading reactortechnologies, including pressurisedwater reactors. Ultra is the equipmentdesigner and integrator for thecontrol and instrumentation suite forthe UK Royal Navy nuclear submarinepropulsion system, where significantpriority is applied to design forequipment supportability. This isachieved using obsolescence-tolerantdesign solutions, through well-established and strong procurementlinks to manufacturers and suppliers,together with a positive approach toobsolescence management.

SIGNATURE MANAGEMENT Ultra offers its integrated signaturemanagement capabilities to naviesworldwide. With over thirty years ofexperience in underwater signatureprediction, measurement andanalysis, Ultra is a world leader in thesupply of multi-influence, underwater,fixed and portable signaturemeasurement range systems, on-board systems and magnetic andelectric sensors. These types ofproducts have been implemented forsteel ships, submarines and minecounter measure vessels. ThereforeUltra understands the interaction ofthe ship’s signature and electro-magnetic countermeasures, as well asthe importance of precisemeasurement and control.

The data produced by these systemsis used to reduce a ships’ electric andmagnetic signatures. Ultra suppliesranges suitable for use in open oceanand in harbour entrances, which havea full system modelling capability andare in operation with the UK MoD,the US Navy and other countries’defence forces. Latest productsinclude multi-influence measurementranges for fixed and transportableapplications. Influences measuredinclude: magnetic, electric, acoustic,seismic and pressure, as well asextremely low frequency emissions.The Group also provides capabilitiesin signature analysis, magnetic andelectric field modelling and advancedsignature control systems, includingon-board degaussing.

HMI EQUIPMENTUltra’s technologies and options forgrips and throttles have proven to beideal for use in unmanned vesselcontrol stations. Ultra introduced thefirst fully ruggedised game-stylecontroller in 2004. By using this formof hand controller, familiar to today’swarfighters, Ultra was able tomilitarise a control system whichreduced training time and has becomean ideal controller for the operation ofnumerous unmanned vessels.

Platform systems

ELECTRIC CRUISE PROPULSION Ultra has developed a range ofelectric cruise propulsion systems tosatisfy today’s needs for increasedefficiency, lower emissions and lowoperational propulsion powers,brought on by stringentenvironmental regulations and theescalating cost of fuel. Ultra’s systemsincorporate its high-efficiency,compact, power-dense electronics,coupled with its power-dense motortechnology. By utilising the ‘spare’electrical capacity of the ship’s serviceelectrical systems, Ultra is able toeliminate the need to operate themain propulsion engines during lowpower operations.

GAS TURBINE ELECTRIC START (GTES) Ultra’s GTES system replaces thetraditional hydraulic or pneumaticstart systems for gas turbines with anelectric drive and motor. This deliverssignificant advantages in terms ofefficiency, reliability and reducedthrough-life costs. The GTES systemcan be programmed to deliveroptimum starting torques and rampspeed profiles, which significantlyreduce the gas turbine startingstresses. Ultra’s solution, comprising apower-dense motor and drive, isinherently smaller, lighter and morecost-effective than the alternatives.To date, it has successfully startednot only civil gas turbines, but alsothe latest generation naval gasturbines, designed for use by boththe US Navy and the UK Royal Navy.

POWER CELLSUltra designs, tests and manufacturesthe future of portable power: solidoxide fuel cell technology. Ultra iscommitted to providing dependable,portable fuel cell power, using readilyaccessible fuel, which can be takeninto the wild or into combat. Solidoxide fuel cell power systems haveproven to be reliable in field testingfor military, leisure and emergencyuse. Ultra’s flexible fuel celltechnology will provide the exactsolution required. From poweringunmanned surface systems toproviding portable power to supportexpeditionary operations, Ultra iscreating new options for how militarycustomers power mission-criticalsystems. Ultra’s ROAMIO D245XRand ROAMIO D300 are fuelled by

globally available propane. Theydeliver lightweight, portable powerin the most austere, remote anddangerous locations. This deliversbetter operational outcomes throughreduced weight burden allowing forlonger mission duration.

POWER CONVERSION AND CONTROLUltra is a leader in the ability topackage power-dense staticconverters, whilst maintaining therequired structural integrity, thermalperformance and ease ofmaintenance. The power convertersare highly modular in constructionand incorporate packaged ‘core’modules, used across the range ofequipment. This philosophy facilitatesdesign flexibility and efficientmanufacture. The modularconstruction enables Ultra topackage them to fit into virtually anyspace-constrained location. Ultra’srange of power converters has beendesigned specifically for the harshenvironment of naval applications,giving it a reliability and compatibilitythat is well in excess of commercialequivalents. This level of ruggedreliability is now also available fornon-naval applications. Key aspectsof this fit-for-purpose design includeEMC compliance, climatic rating,operational reliability, a mechanicalconstruction to withstand severeshock and vibration and a greaterflexibility to meet non-standardrequirements.

Ultra has over30 years of experience in designing,manufacturing and integratingweapon interface managementsystems into both combat systemsand weapon systems. Suchcapabilities are key to weapon safety,providing the safety interlock betweencombat management systems andweapon handling and launch systems.The capability and flexibility providedby Ultra’s weapon interface systemshas been significantly increasedthrough the use of COTS-basedproducts. This allows the interfacesystem to be easily upgraded,enabling the integration of a wideselection of current and futureweapons and interfaces.

NEXT GENERATION SURFACESEARCH RADAR Ultra has exploited modern hardwareand software data fusiontechnologies to develop a robustreal-time data aggregation andsynchronisation radar architecture.This has enabled the development ofan affordable, operationally effectivenext generation surface search radar.

This system is based on the AN/SPS-74system that is deployed on the USNavy’s aircraft carrier fleet and isdesigned to offer improved navigationand surface search capabilities to thefleet. It also has the capability todetect submarine periscope targetswith high probability, whilstmaintaining a low probability of falsealarm. Its open architecture isdesigned to enable integration withmultiple types of radar systems toenable a common data acquisitionand processing environment.

ELECTRO-OPTIC FIRE CONTROL Ultra is the UK’s primary supplier ofnaval electro-optical (EO) and firecontrol systems. With decades ofexperience in naval EO, Ultra hassupplied over 150 systems to some 15 navies and coastguards worldwide,including the UK Royal Navy. Ultra’sproducts are deployed on a widerange of ships, ranging from smallpatrol vessels to aircraft carriers. Ultraprovides precision EO tracking for guncalibres up to 127mm and gun firecontrol modes for naval surface, navalair and shore bombardment.

The Group has an extensive capabilityfor the supply of high-performance,rugged naval EO sensors in thevisual, IR and thermal wavebands.Ultra’s sensors have provided reliableservice in hostile environmentsworldwide for the past 20 years.They are in use on the latest RoyalNavy Type 45 destroyer EOsurveillance and fire control systems,as well as being specified for severalnew UK and overseas platforms;ranging from coastguard patrolvessels to the largest fighting ships.

LOGISTIC SUPPORTUltra is committed to offering flexibleand cost-effective logistic supportpackages, which are tailored to suitthe customer’s needs. These canrange from straightforward ‘sparesand repairs’, through to integratedlogistic support contracts, andthrough-life capability services. Theseinclude availability-based contracts,where the Group has alreadydemonstrated its repeated ability tomeet performance requirements atunder target cost. For its portfolio ofproducts, Ultra is able to offer 24-hour on-call support, includingtechnical helpdesks, and contractor-on-deployed-operations engineers.Out-of-area contractor support is alsoavailable. In addition to maintenanceand training, these packages caninclude comprehensive obsolescencemitigation plans. Full cradle-to-graveinventory management is offered,covering products from their initialdesign to eventual disposal.
