Understanding by Design:Comparing What’s Changing
in the DepEd Lesson Plan
Mark Fullmerhttp://writing.markfullmer.com
Why do we need to change?
According to DepEd…1. “Society is changing, and our
students need to keep up”2. “National achievement scores
indicate an ‘Educational Crisis’ in the Philippines”
2010 Secondary Education Curriculum Guide in English. March 26, 2010. 2010 National Secondary Education Curriculum ('UbD curriculum'). http://eduphil.org/forum/ubd-rbec-nsec-bec-psslc-pelc-etc-materials-t-2927.html
UbD Philosophy in a Nutshell
Traditional Planning “Backward Design” (UbD)
“Teachers start curriculum planning with activities and textbooks instead of identifying classroom learning goals and planning towards that goal.
“Teacher start with classroom outcomes and then plans the curriculum, choosing activities and materials that help determine student ability and foster student learning.
Putting it another way…
Write lesson plan & choose materials
Determine grading criteria
Design assessment
Identify what students learned
Reflect on what students should learn

Order of Planning Emphasis on Critical Thinking Terminology:
Higher Order Thinking Skills = Facets of Understanding
Another way of saying HOTS…
Higher Order Thinking Skills
Facets of Understanding
Evaluation / Creating Self-Knowledge
Synthesis / Evaluating Empathy
Analysis / Analysing Perspective
Application / Applying Apply
Comprehension / Understanding
Interpret
Knowledge / Remembering Explain
