Samaritans are offering students a unique chance to trial a dream job and get a taste of what it is really like to be at the top.

Samaritans’ Plymouth branch is asking students to raise as much money as possible for the charity in any way they can.

To enter the challenge, which is being launched week beginning Saturday January 17th, fill out the attached application form detailing how much you plan to raise and how you plan to do it or alternatively log onto www.dreamjobchallenge.co.uk to apply online.

To open your fund-raising account participants are asked to donate the first £10.

The 15 students who raise the most money by April 30th 2004 will get to choose from one of 20 dream jobs in the city.

The fund-raising challenge launch, which runs from Saturday January 17th - Sunday January 25th will be a week packed full of fun activities! Please refer to launch programme over.

Remember to keep us informed of all your activities by logging on to the ‘Dream Job Challenge’ website - www.dreamjobchallenge.co.uk - and always state the two H’s:

- How & Where you plan to raise your money

- How much you’ve raised so far

- The website is full of fundraising ideas and up-to-date news.

To keep tabs on your fellow fund-raisers check out the website league table to see who’s in the lead or who needs to step up the pace!

The challenge has been organised as part of a year-long programme of events celebrating a unique milestone in the history of the city’s Samaritans, Plymouth branch.

The UK’s emotional health charity and the original 24-hour phone helpline celebrated their 50th anniversary on Sunday November 2nd last year and charity members want Plymouth students to join them in the celebration of their golden jubilee year.

The charity is entirely self funded and relies solely on donations. Though finding the volunteers to provide the service is at times a problem, raising money to fund the administration costs of running the branch is a daily challenge. On an annual basis, £25,000 is needed to fund the Plymouth branch.

Everyday Samaritans offer emot-ional support to those in need. The Plymouth branch frequently receives calls from people who are lonely, have mental health problems or are

feeling suicidal – 18 % of all national calls received by Samaritans are from callers who express suicidal feelings.

Listening volunteers admit that it is hard not to take on the caller’s feelings of despair and that they can’t help but put themselves in the callers shoes to try and understand what they are going through.

University life can be a very emotional time for students and they may experience negative feelings not felt before such as loneliness, depression and anxiety, to name but a few. They may not always know how to deal with such feelings.

The ‘Dream Job Challenge’ is aimed not only at raising much needed funds, but also at highlighting the importance of emotional health, boosting awareness of taking time out and being more conscious of other people’s feelings.

Samaritans was founded as a registered charity in 1953. The Plymouth branch first opened its doors to the public on November 11th, 1972.

This branch currently operates with 92 volunteers who commit to atleast 200 hours a year on a voluntary basis. They provide 24-hour confidential emotional support over the telephone, face to face and by e-mail.

Take up the ‘Dream Job Challenge’...

Design Thinking

SERVICE > PROPOSITION > STRATEGY > DELIVERY > RETURNS

13

Design thinking is creative, innovative, and focused on problem-solving. But so is the thinking of many different types of professions: lawyers, engineers, and contractors, to name only a few. So lets remove those as differentiators right away. No, if there is such a thing as design thinking, it’s probably shorthand for these things:

• A Focus on Customers/Users. It’s not about the company and how your business is structured. The customer doesn’t care about that. They are care about doing their tasks and achieving their goals within their limits. Design thinking begins with those.

• Finding Alternatives. Designing isn’t about choosing between multiple options, it’s about creating those options. It is this finding of multiple solutions to problems that sets designers apart.

• Ideation and Prototyping. The way we find those solutions is through brainstorming and then, importantly, building models to test the solutions out. Now, I know that scientists and architects and even accountants model things, and possibly in a similar way, but there’s a significant difference: our prototypes aren’t fixed. One doesn’t necessarily represent the solution, only a solution. It’s not uncommon for several prototypes to be combined into a single product.

• Tough Problems. The problems designers are used to taking on are those without a clear solution, with multiple stake holders, fuzzy boundaries, and where the outcome is never known and usually unexpected. Being able to deal with the complexity of these “tough” problems is one of the hallmarks of design thinking.

• A Wide Range of Influences. Because design touches on so many subject areas (psychology, ergonomics, economics, engineering, architecture, art, etc.), designers should bring to the table a broad, multi-disciplinary spectrum of ideas from which to draw inspiration and solutions.

• Emotion. In analytical thinking, emotion is seen as an impediment to logic and making the right choices. In design, decisions without an emotional component are lifeless and do not connect with people.

Other disciplines, I’m sure, do one or more of these at any given time. But I think it’s the combination of these that people mean - or should mean - when using the phrase “design thinking.”

If you would like a free exploratory meeting call me on 01752 509024 or 07970 791807 and we can do some “design thinking” together!
