Mark Twain wrote his famous essay as a comment on his exasperation with German grammar. Trying to learn this language seems to have been mere torture for him. „I heard a Californian student in Heidelberg, say, in one of his calmest moods, that he would rather decline two drinks than one German adjective.“ The text appears in excerpts, accompanied by mezzotint etchings which Eckhard Froeschlin created while tra- veling in California and New England.
