Financial reports on operations for the year ended December 31, 2014, will also be presented during the annual meeting.

Capital Credit Checks to GV Members in MayHow much is being paid out? Ten percent of the remaining capital credits allocated for 2000, and 10% of the 2014 capital credits--a total of more than $469,000--will be mailed in May.

In 1989, eighteen local telephone companies, including Garden Valley, formed a company named Northwest Minnesota Special Access (NWMSA) to put together a network that would enable the schools and libraries of northwest Minnesota to be connected to each other and to Region 1 (a regional software and service provider for the schools). NWMSA has once again won the bid to provide this network, and will continue to provide Ethernet services to over 40 libraries and over 100 schools. The network covers over 20,000 square miles and utilizes over 2,500 miles of fiber optics. The schools and libraries are free to purchase connection speeds up to 10 gigabits per second if they have a need. This network is just one example of what can happen when the small local telephone companies work together to provide high-speed services to joint customers, and all companies involved are heavily invested in the communities they serve.

Over the years, Garden Valley has joined forces with several companies for joint ventures, including a few different networks, a directory publishing company, and most recently, a company named Cooperative Network Services (CNS), which is a consortium of the communications cooperatives around the state. This company was formed to combine our assets for services that in many cases wouldn’t be financially possible for small companies to justify on their own. A place you are most apt to see a CNS vehicle in our area is near our construction projects during the summer. We utilize engineering services for the large projects, and it’s sure nice to be paying a company that we are an owner of when we need outside help.

In my last article, I mentioned that there are changes in the works. In May, I will be joining the ranks of the retired telephone worker. I have had the pleasure of working at Garden Valley for over 34 years, the last just shy of 19 as the General Manager. It seems like last week that I started working as a summer temp as I earned a college degree, and joined the force full time in 1981. I’m sure anyone who has ever approached retirement would agree that you wonder every day where all that time went. My entire working career, as well as getting married and raising two wonderful girls to be responsible adults, has revolved around working at this Company. I think I still owe my wife the honeymoon we didn’t take so I could be back to work three days after the holiday weekend wedding. So while I’m saying goodbye to the family we have here at Garden Valley, I’m looking forward to spending more time with my real family. (I wonder if my wife is ready for that?)

Anyway, it has been a pleasure to serve you for all these years, and I know the Company will continue to be in good hands and provide the services you need long into the future.

It’s been great!

Manager’sReport

George W. Fish General Manager

Sincerely,

Board Election Process

Have you ever wondered how Directors are elected to Garden Valley’s nine-member Board of Directors? Hopefully this information will help you understand.

We do not have a nominating committee, nor do we have mail-in ballots. The entire election process is handled at the annual membership meeting.

This year, the election process will consist of Districts 3, 6 and 9 caucus meetings being held at the Win-E-Mac School during a recess of the annual membership meeting on June 2. Members from any of those districts may attend their district caucus meeting during that recess. During each district caucus meeting, a caucus chairman is chosen and nominations are called for. Their list of nominees is announced when the annual meeting is called back to order.

Once the annual meeting has been called back to order, nominations will also be called for from the floor for Districts 3, 6 and 9. All nominees, those nominated from the district caucuses and from the floor, are given an opportunity to address the membership before the ballots are collected and counted. Members in attendance from all districts may vote for one person per district, and again, those districts this year are District 3 (Red Lake Falls and St. Hilaire exchanges), District 6 (Clearbrook, Gonvick and Leonard exchanges) and District 9 (Gatzke, Goodridge and Grygla exchanges). The winner for each district is the one with the majority votes.

Board of Directors’

PERSPECTIVETo Garden Valley Members

It is with regret that the Board of Directors accepted the retirement announcement from General Manager George Fish at their meeting in December, 2014. George has been an integral part of the success of Garden Valley, is respected by the Board, staff and his peers in the industry, and has been an active community member. He has also served on various industry organizations and committees, including the Minnesota Telecom Alliance Board.

Since George assumed the position of General Manager in June, 1996, the assets of Garden Valley have more than doubled, increasing from $35-million to nearly $71-million. He has worked hard to meet the cooperative’s goal of providing members with the services they need at the lowest possible costs.

George’s leadership and great work ethic have made our member-owned cooperative very strong and successful. George has always shied away from recognition for his efforts, believing that you work hard every day and give your best to make your company successful. George has many wonderful accomplishments and we are fortunate at Garden Valley to have had his many years of dedicated service. He leaves the cooperative in great shape, both financially and infrastructure, allowing our access to the latest technology available.

President Vernon Hamnes stated, “I was on the Board when George was hired and I have never been sorry he was hired. In my position as President, he has been a pleasure to work with.” The entire Board feels the same, extends their best wishes to George on his retirement and thanks him for his years of service. May he enjoy his retirement, working on the hobbies and projects that he has set aside while successfully leading this Company in a professional manner.

GV Represented at Telecom

ConferencesRepresentatives from

Garden Valley’s Board of Directors and management staff attended the 61st annual meeting of NTCA–The Rural Broadband Association, in Phoenix, Arizona, during the week of March 9; and the 106th annual convention of the Minnesota Telecom Alliance (MTA) in Minneapolis, March 23 through the 25th.

These industry conferences featured notable speakers who addressed topics of importance for telephone companies and their subscribers.

In February, General Manager George Fish and Finance Manager Mark Klinkhammer met in St. Paul with area legislators during the MTA “Day on the Hill” to discuss issues of concern to the telecommunications industry.

This month, Director Edgar Olson will be representing Garden Valley at the NTCA Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.

Personnel NewsService Milestones

In March, Office Clerk Kristi Benson completed 10 years of service with Garden Valley, and Central Office Equipment employee Steve Holzer and Network Supervisor Mark Thompson completed 20 years of service.

GV Supports Area

Communities

Donations, given in the form of cash or merchandise, are a way Garden Valley gives back to area communities. Our donation policy allows for an annual amount, based on the number of access lines in an exchange, that is designated to be used on a first-come, first-served basis to non-political and non-religious organizations within our service area.

Since January 2000, Garden Valley has provided donations to area community organizations totaling more than $78,000.

To request a donation, qualifying organizations may call us at 800-448-8260.

After 34 years with Garden Valley, General Manager George Fish, who began full-time employment with Garden Valley on June 1, 1981, has announced his retirement effective June 1.

George worked for Garden Valley as a temporary employee in 1978, 1979 and 1980. He became a full-time construction lineman in 1981 and later that year became an installer-repairman. George was promoted to the

Nondiscrimination & Equal Employment Opportunity Policy StatementsEach year, Garden Valley Telephone Company prints a Statement of Nondiscrimination and Equal Employment Opportunity in area

To comply with this requirement, Garden Valley is now requesting new members to identify their racial/ethnic group (a. White, b. Black, c. Hispanic, d. American Indian or Alaskan Native, e. Asian or Pacific Islander). The form sent to new members advises them that their responses are optional, and that any information provided will be used only for federal government reporting purposes.

Statement of NondiscriminationIn accordance with Federal law and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s policy, Garden Valley Telephone Company is prohibited

from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, or disability. The person responsible for coordinating Garden Valley’s nondiscrimination compliance efforts is the Personnel & Administrative

You may also write a letter containing all of the information requested in the form. Send your completed complaint form or letter by mail to U.S. Department of Agriculture, Director, Office of Adjudication, 1400 Independence Avenue, S.W., Washington, D.C. 20250-9410, by fax (202) 690-7442 or email at [email protected].

Statement of Equal Employment OpportunityNo person shall be discriminated against in employment because of sex, race, color, religion, creed, national origin, age or

disability. All supervisory personnel at every level of management are on notice that our equal employment opportunity policy must be conscientiously and comprehensively applied throughout the Company’s operations.

Applicants for employment who believe they have been discriminated against have the right to notify the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; 1801 L Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20507 or an EEOC Field Office by calling toll free (800) 669-4000, or if hearing impaired, call toll free TDD number (800) 669-6820; the Federal Communications Commission; Washington, D.C. 20554; or other appropriate agency.

April 1995, he became facilities manager and safety director. The Board of Directors hired George as general manager in June 1996.

George has served on various industry organizations and committees, including the Minnesota Telecom Alliance Board; and he currently is president of Northwest Minnesota Special Access.

We wish him well in his retirement!

UNIVERSAL SERVICE CHARGE

The Federal Universal Service Fund Charge (FUSC) increased in April from $1.34 to $1.39 per line for most residential and single-line business customers, and from $2.05 to $2.12 per access line for most multi-line business customers.

The new FUSC amount for cellular service is calculated by multiplying the FUSC factor against your cellular plan charges. Effective in April, that FUSC factor will increase from 6.2328% to 6.4554%.

Beginning in mid-May and running through the first week in July, sales executives from Pinnacle Publishing will be contacting area businesses concerning classified listings and advertisements in the Yellow Pages of Garden Valley’s 2016 telephone directory. Both our printed and online directories are great tools for a business to increase visibility and connect with their customers.

Requesting proper identification will eliminate any confusion with salespersons who solicit ads in our area for other directories, as only persons associated with Pinnacle Publishing in Bemidji are authorized to sell directory listings and advertisements for Garden Valley. Not pictured but also working on our directory as telephone sales reps are Katherine Egelhof, Amber O’Beirne, Karen Rengel, Rogene Rogers and Shelly Stephens. If Pinnacle reps have not contacted your business or organization by the middle of July, please call Garden Valley’s office at 800-448-8260.
