Debbie Puls

By Gina Peters

The Spotlight this month is on one of Union Kiwanis’ newer and very active members, Debbie Puls. Debbie has lived in the Union area most of her life. She has been married to her high school sweetheart, Ken, for 37 years. She remembers, “We met at Camp MoVal where we both worked.” They have two sons, Travis and Alex. Travis and his wife, Emily, have a daughter, Ella (3) and Alex and his wife, Shelby, have two sons, Ken (4) and Henry (2). Debbie feels she is very fortunate because they get together as a family every weekend. In her free time that she isn’t spending with her kids and grandkids, she likes “treasure hunting (aka antiquing) or reading which is much less expensive.” Also when the weather allows, “Ken and I love to ride our Harley.” Debbie says, “This summer we will get to watch our oldest grandson play tee-ball. It’s been several years since our boys played ball so it’s time to get back into it.” Debbie taught in Union R-XI’s elementary schools for 25 years. She taught at Central Elementary for three years, stayed home nine years with her boys, and then taught 22 years at Beaufort Elementary before retiring in May of 2018. She joined Kiwanis four months later. Debbie explains, “Since educating youngsters in academics and social/emotional skills was a major focus of my life for many years, I wanted to stay involved with the youth in our community after retiring. “Joining Kiwanis was a way to do that.” So even after retiring, she finds herself in a school for several reasons. She does some substitute teaching, and through her involvement in Kiwanis, she volunteers as an advisor for Builders Club at Union’s Middle School, distributes Terrific Kids attendance awards at Beaufort Elementary, reads to students through the RIF program, assists with the Beaufort K-Kids Clothing Drive, and helps in other roles. Debbie shares, “Working with young people is just part of who I am.” Debbie actively participates in other aspects of Kiwanis as well. She was a member of this year’s Bowling Social Committee, has helped extensively with the Community Table at First Presbyterian Church and is a Co-Chair of this project, currently serves on the club’s Board of Directors, and volunteers with the Wildcat Food Pack organization for the Union Schools even preparing an additional note of encouragement to go in each bag along with the food, in addition to many other community projects. Debbie gives of her time, energy, enthusiasm, and talents to several Kiwanis and other school and community-related endeavors, but none so much as being an advisor for Builders Club at Union’s Middle School. Since becoming an advisor of the group along with fellow Kiwanian-Lucy Scott, the club has participated in Treat or Treat Street, took part in the Cram the Cruiser toy collection, raised and donated money to Unicef, collected for the Salvation Army, and more-all with the goal in mind of being more of a service leadership organization. “As an advisor for Builders Club, I consider myself blessed to be able to help members realize how great service leadership can make them feel. It’s great to see them so full of ideas and then seeing the feeling of empowerment they get after helping their community. Hopefully, the realization of their impact on the world will carry over into their adult lives, and they will influence others to get involved, also.”

Who or what is your “Shining Star”. This will replace the 50/50 drawings until the end of September.

At every meeting for the donation of $1, members will have an opportunity to share whom or what they feel is a shining star to them.

Stars will be placed in a drawing on September 28th. Half of the proceeds will go into our club’s administrative account.

The remaining proceeds will go to the member drawn. They may keep their winnings or donate to the committee or club project of their choice.

Participation is optional. Just thought it’s a nice way to share a positive vibe with the group.

Instead of the Midwinter Conference, in the 2019-20 Kiwanis year MO-ARK is excited to offer regional Mid-Year Education Days. These one day conferences will give all Kiwanians the opportunity to learn more about Kiwanis with less travel. We hope to encourage attendance so more officers, board members, committee chairs and active members can become even more engaged and informed.

The education days will consist of sessions regarding Club Revitalization Plan, Engaging New Members, and round tables discussions about Youth Protection, Fundraising, Signature Projects, Generational Harmony and Building Young Professionals Club (and/or Club Satellite?). The registration fee of $30.00 will include lunch. The luncheon meeting will include Committee reports and awards. For more information and to register: Go to https://moarkkiwanis.net/Page/47015
