Club meetings, through other messages, etc.

The ProPosalSo given all this, and keeping in mind that the Club has a capital fund for major projects, the SPC believes it’s in the Club’s best interest to pursue a plan that provides for the following:

■ Raise the pool by one storey (we can’t go higher than that without paying significant government fees), replacing it with a new 25 yard lap pool, a training pool and a kids’ swim area.

■ Tear down the Scotts Road building (where the Bowling Alley, Youth Zone, etc. are) which, again, is over 50 years old and replace it with a new, state of the art facility while re-organizing the Club more effectively.

■ Create a level platform off the Eagle’s Nest/connecting it to the pool to facilitate indoor and outdoor dining.

■ Add a much needed centralize production kitchen, enabling us to reduce the size of the other kitchens and the manpower needed to run these outlets. It is also more efficient and cost effective to centralized food production. ■ Update and expand the Gym by 20%, the Union Bar by 30%, and almost double the size of the Business Center.

■ Expand the opportunities and amount of space available to community organizations like SACAC, AAS, etc.

■ Relocate and expand various back of house operations, doubling staff rest areas while facilitating more efficient deliveries, use of space, etc.

■ Centralize activity centers (i.e., all kids’ activities in one area, adult oriented things in another); and

■ Create the Club of the future.

This recommendation is bolstered by our belief that we can accomplish this without closing the Restaurants, Spa, Gym and other facilities of the Club including the Youth Zone (which would be temporarily relocated). We also believe that we can find alternative locations for swimming while work proceeds and, in fact,

PRESIdENTfrom the

o here it is... the big one. Over the last few months I’ve had the

opportunity to tell you a bit about the Club’s current financial situation, celebrate the longevity and success

of many of the Club’s staff while, at the same time, tell you a bit about the challenges we’re facing on staffing, facilities, membership, etc. This message, however, is all about opportunity... our opportunity to design and provision the Club of the future.

The Club’s FuTureAs per my prior messages, the General Committee (GC), working closely with the Strategic Planning Committee (SPC), hired a company named Aedas Pte Ltd late last year to evaluate the Club’s current service offerings, the condition of its facilities, etc., all with a view towards determining how we can make the most out of what we have now and for the next twenty years. Subsequently we retained a company called Realys to work closely with Aedas as the Club’s representative. Collectively these two companies, along with the GC and SPC, engaged in numerous discussions over the last few months to evaluate our options taking costs, timelines, efficiencies, zoning, security, space utilization, anticipated trends regarding the composition of the American community in Singapore, etc. into account. This evaluation took over six months and included a detailed review of the Club’s history including its original blue prints and four detailed proposals by several previous strategic planning committees, ten years’ worth of Annual Member Surveys, interviews with our senior staff and various Club Members, etc. Aedas and Realys have also carefully audited the state of the Club’s current facilities including the pool, buildings and their related mechanical systems with specialized teams. Based on this review, Aedas and Realys presented approximately nine options to the SPC ranging from maintaining the status quo (sort of) to a complete redo of the Club (i.e., tearing it all down and starting over again). Now, after multiple meetings with the SPC, Aedas and the SPC have come to the following conclusions:

■ The concept of completely replacing the Club, meaning tearing it all down and starting over, is simply too expensive, and would take too long. It isn’t an option.

■ Some physical components of the Clubhouse

are simply old, costly and do not comply with current building codes. Some areas lack handicap access, efficient mechanical systems and are generally inefficient. Indeed the Scotts Road building is over 50 years old and structurally shows it.

■ The filtration system, subsurface and tiling of the swimming pool are at the tail end of (or have outlived) their useful life. Some tests even indicate that the water’s weight is the only thing holding the tiles in/keeping it together. The pool will need to be closed for an extended period of time (several months) at some point in the near future to rectify these problems.

■ The Club’s kitchens are not designed to service current demands. They are inefficient and thus unnecessarily increase the Club's operating costs.

■ Back of the house facilities such as staff rest areas, working offices, etc. are too small and do not meet current needs. This is evident as some members of the staff don’t have any place to rest between shifts other than on benches outside of the staff’s cafeteria.

■ The Gym’s music and entertainment system have outlived their working life as well. The current system no longer has product support and therefore should be replaced. Management is currently looking for alternatives but there aren’t many given that reliable internet connectivity would require hacking out the floor, re-cabling, etc.

■ And most tellingly (and this is the most difficult issue to describe as it exists due to many, many reasons), the Club’s design lacks logistical efficiency and is simply not well organized from an operational perspective. The absence of reasonable flow in and out of service areas adds to confusion, cost and decreased service. This is why, for example, Members frequently run into staff carrying food from one outlet to another (i.e., Eagle’s Nest to the Union Bar, Poolside to the Bowling Alley, etc.). It is also why the Club has far more stairs than it should, which, in turn, significantly limit the facilities’ useable space. In short, the Club is ultimately using five different buildings that have been cobbled together during various periods of the Club’s life.

Please remember these statements are general at best. We’ll dig into the details later at

MAY / JUN 2014THE AMERICAN CLUB4

Page 9: Mark Zuckerberg changed the way we see and useamclub.org.sg/files/TAC-magazine-may-jun-web.pdf · Mark Zuckerberg changed the way we see and use technology. With Stamford’s enhanced,

have begun to explore alternative arrangements with other clubs in Singapore. And finally, and perhaps ultimately, this recommendation is predicated upon the SPC’s desire to act in a proactive, responsible manner rather than respond to major facility failures and safety issues as they arise. This said, we recognize that exercising this option will leave us without an onsite pool and Bowling Alley for 1.5 to 2 years and, to be blunt, will be mighty inconvenient.

sPeak uP, be heardSo now... what’s next? Candidly, although a lot of work has already been done, in reality, we’re just getting started. This, then, means now is the time for Members to let the GC and SPC know their thoughts on these topics; in other words, right now is your time to ask questions, provide suggestions, etc. This said, since we believe many Members may have similar questions, we want to communicate with you efficiently and thoroughly. The Club’s Marketing & Communications team, therefore, will create and maintain a Q&A page for the SPC on the Club’s website within the next three weeks to serve as a forum for communications and for reviewing and consolidating questions and answers as they come in. The idea is to provide a single e-mail address for questions and use this site to centralize comments, discussions, etc. regarding the options that have been presented as well as the status of the various work that’s being conducted by the SPC and its advisors. We also plan to host a general Club meeting before May 30 to discuss the topic followed by meetings in late August and finally in late October to facilitate discussions to make sure everyone has an opportunity to be heard before decision time... November 12, 2014 - the Club’s Annual General Meeting. This, then, is just the start... so don’t rejoice, panic or otherwise think anything’s a foregone conclusion; it’s not - although I will say that the SPC believes its recommendation, that being replacement of the Scotts Road building and pool, is the most responsible one given the state of the building, the pool, and our financial ability to correct things now, when we want to, rather than later when we HAvE to. The options, however, will ultimately be decided by the Club’s membership as a whole so please, speak up and let us know your thoughts... we really do want this to be an open, transparent and interactive discussion.

Thanks very much for your attention to this important (and exciting) matter.

6 THE AMERICAN CLUB MAY / JUN 2014

GENERALMANAGER

from the

ummer is just around the corner and I am sure many of you are

getting ready to wrap up the school year and embark on your summer adventures. Unfortunately, we

traditionally see a larger number of Members leave at this time of the year. If

you are one of the Members leaving, I sincerely hope The Club has enriched your Singapore experience and we all wish you great success on the next phase of your journey. To all of other valued Members, here is a quick update:

annual MeMber surveyComing up this month from May 11 to 30 will be our Annual Member Survey. We will be using the same 10-question format from prior years because of the ability to benchmark our performance against past scores. As with previous years, we will be using an external party to implement, monitor and report on the entire survey. This survey is very important because it not only lets us know how we are doing; it also helps set directions on how we proceed for the new financial year and is one of the important kPIs for staff.

For our niche groups, you may recall that we recently conducted the mid-year pulse check. The results indicate that our niche group Members are generally pleased with The Club in many areas such as the upkeep of the facilities, professionalism of staff and timeline of communications. However, improvement needs to be made in particular for the overall range of individual and family activities, quality of Food and Beverage, quality of service at the dining facilities and overall quality of The Club. The overall average mean score for the 10k, 15k and Elite is 3.85. To put this score in context, last year on the Annual Member Survey, we had a mean score of 3.99. We have taken note of many of the issues that were raised during the survey with changes being made to address areas of concern. We hope the changes made in response to this survey will be visible and well-received. Thank you to all of you who participated!

InCrease oF alCohol and TobaCCo duTIes As part of the slew of 2014 Budget measures released on Friday, February 21, the Singapore Government announced that there will be an increase in liquor duties by 25 percent, and tobacco duties by 10 percent. As the new excise duties were effective immediately, many of The Club’s suppliers proceeded to pass on this cost increase to The Club for wine, liquor, bottled

THE AMERICAN CLUB MAY / JUN 20146

and draft beer. We evaluated the possibility of absorbing the cost but unfortunately, the impact of the new duties on beverage cost is quite significant, at about $100,000 a year, so we will be passing the duty increase on to Members. New beverage prices came into effect from Wednesday, March 26 and you can see from the list of Union Bar prices (refer to figure 1) that The Club is merely covering the cost of the excise duty increases. Members continue to enjoy nett prices without service charge and inclusive of Goods and Services tax at The Club.

onlIne sPa reservaTIons Over the years, Members have been asking for a way to book Spa appointments online which will reduce the need to call or walk to the busy reception area. To this end, we are very pleased to share that sên Spa has launched a new online booking system that will enable you to book and manage your basic appointments such as massage, facial and manicure and pedicure services directly from wherever you are. You will be able to see on your screen the services and staff available. It will also feature automated email confirmations so you don’t miss your appointments. The service started on April 1 and Members will need to register on our Club website in order to access the spa feature. For a listing of FAQs, please head to the website. *Please note that due to the complexity of certain services including Hair and Combo treatments, these will not be available for booking online.

enhanCeMenTsaT ouTleTsYou may have noticed that many of our F&B staff at the Eagle’s Nest, Union Bar and Poolside are wearing an earpiece connected to a walkie talkie. This system was introduced to enable better communication between our kitchen and service teams. This should translate into more efficient service and a better overall experience for Members. Operationally it means servers now only need to head to the kitchen when prompted for a food pick up, eliminating phone calls between outlets or wasted trips to check on food orders. This increase in efficiency is most apparent for the food being delivered to the Union Bar. They come from the Eagle’s Nest kitchen, and now busy staff only head to the Kitchen when the food is confirmed as being ready for pick-up. Please also take a moment to ask the staff if they like using the system; the feedback has been very positive and that adds to staff satisfaction as well.

Additionally, we will be undertaking some minor improvements in the Eagle’s Nest and Poolside kitchens. Last year, the Eagles Nest kitchen produced well over 200,000 meals. The original design was not configured to deal with this production volume so the equipment and layout improvements will help with productivity via more efficient food preparation.

b2 Car Park Tree reMoval and rePlaCeMenT For some time, we have been battling with the trees that are beside the ramp going down to the B1 car park. These two trees have been problematic for several reasons, including producing poisonous seeds that affect the bird life, the ‘green’ waste that falls on the car park ramp, the tennis courts that need constant clearing, and the root system which hinders us from doing any rectification work to stop the dirt draining into the B2 car park every time it rains. In consultation with our Landscapers and the House Committee, we will remove these two trees and add a new range of foxtail Palms (refer to figure 2) that will be set in a functional planter box. We will also be adding a ‘green wall’ in the upper car park just on the side facing the B1 down ramp. This work will be done in the quieter month of June. It will obviously take some time for the trees and the plants to mature, and whilst we are retaining the sense of green, the cleaner surroundings will enable our Housekeeping team to focus on other duties in The Club.

41 years oF servICe – Mr. Freddy FooWe have been blessed with many, many wonderful staff over the years who have contributed in a priceless way to our sense of community and driven our consistently high Member satisfaction. Freddy Foo, The Club’s Beverage Manager for the past seven years, is one of those staff. Freddy started back in 1972 as a waiter and held numerous roles over his distinguished career. Freddy completed 40 years of service on November 5, 2012 and last year at our Annual Staff dinner & dance received a standing ovation from the entire team. We finished with a farewell party on The 2nd Floor (photos attached) in March where I presented him with several lovely gifts on behalf of all staff and Members. Other long term staff also spoke, agreeing that Freddy’s legacy was his huge heart and close friendships with staff and Members alike. He will be sadly missed.

FIsCal year (Fy) 2014 / 15The Club’s fiscal year ends on June 30, 2014 and we are positioned to land slightly behind the gross operating profit (GOP) budget, but within the financial breakeven of plus/minus $500,000 as mandated by the General Committee. This year’s projected shortfall is due to two sources: 1. additional property tax per the recent advice from the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) about an increase in annual valuation of the Club property, and an additional provision for unused leave balance arising from the adoption of a more accurate basis (from average basis to actual base wage basis) of accruing for unused leave. This change is per the recommendation from Ernst and Young during the last audit. Outside of these issues, the team has done an excellent job on delivering on GOP targets. More details will be provided once the accounts have been finalized and audited.

We continue to do more and more that taps on technology plus continue to streamline processes to improve operational efficiencies. Some of these measures are obvious to the Members such as e-commerce, as mentioned above – service staff use of walkie-talkies, the online booking of Tennis Courts and Spa appointments, the self service kiosk at Thyme Café and many more of these initiatives are in the pipeline. However, many improvements are not seen by the Members, such as new work order systems, the redesigning of sections of the Eagle’s Nest and Poolside kitchens to improve work flow, e-time payroll system, online purchase requisitions, automated e-SMS for appointment reminders etc. All of these have the objective to either enhance the Member service experience or improve our team’s productivity. Thanks for your continued support as we roll out more of these measures that will ultimately enable us to effectively deal with rising payroll pressures and challenging employment conditions.

WhaT’s haPPenIng ThIs suMMer? You can see from Scott’s President’s message that our Strategic Planning process has been more active in the last 12 months. As there is no conclusion yet on the best way to proceed with major Clubhouse upgrades, management is being prudent with Club funds and only doing some much needed upgrading of facilities, so no significant renovation projects are lined up this year. Some work will be done to enhance the Eagle’s Nest dining area and Library, while some rectification will take place in the Gym. The Poolside area will look like new with a new shade cloth above the toddler pool, new material for the umbrellas and the replacement of the fabric in the lounges and seats. After 5 years of very dynamic use, the Youth Zone, the Teen Room and Youth Space will also be upgraded.

From June 3 to August 10, The Club will be running the Summer Sampler Program. This is open to US and Canadian Citizens only and it’s a great opportunity for you to sponsor friends to enjoy a 2-week trial of The Club before joining as full Members. Limited spots are available and we thank Members with gift vouchers for a successful referral of a new Member.

do keep in mind a visiting Membership for family staying over this period. Just give our Membership Office a call at 6739-4331 and they will be happy to talk you through the details of allowing family to access The Club without you needing to be present and sign them in as a guest.

Also remember that our very popular Stars ‘n Stripes Summer Camp program will run weekly from June 2 to August 15 for kids 2 to 12 years of age. Again, this year’s program is bigger and better and promises to give your child an experience that is both engaging and memorable. For the first two weeks, you can sign your kids up on a daily basis.

If you have any questions or would like to meet up to talk through any aspect of Club-life, please email me at [email protected].

Enjoy your summer!

JUNIOR MEMBERSHIPAGE LIMIT RAISEd FROM 21 TO 25 YEARS

At the Annual General Meeting in November 2013, Members approved a change to Article 13(a) of the Club Constitution. The change effectively raises the upper age limit for Junior Members from 21 to 25 years. This change was recently approved by the Registrar of Societies (ROS). If you have a child or children registered in the Club membership database who are turning 21 or are currently between 21 and 25 years of age, you would have received a letter from The Club highlighting the changes and the options that are now available to you.

Here are the options:

Option 1Apply for Junior Membership for your child(ren) aged between 21 and 25 years at a monthly subscription rate of $170.67. This will enable your child(ren) to enjoy independent access and usage of The Club till he or she turns 25 years of age or gets married, whichever is sooner. Junior Members aged between 21 and 25 years will carry the same color membership card as the principal and spouse Members and will enjoy full membership privileges, including niche group privileges where applicable. All Junior Member dues and Club spending will be billed to the Principal Member account. Simply send us the completed application form which can be requested from the Membership Office with the relevant supporting documents. Option 2Apply for an Associate or Ordinary membership for your child under the Legacy program with a 10% discount on the entrance fee. Please note that only active Junior Members, defined as those who have been paying Junior Member dues for at least 3 years (need not be continuous), are eligible for Legacy membership. The offer for the Legacy program expires when your child turns 25 and is subject to verification by The Club that all eligibility criteria are fulfilled. Option 3If neither of the above options are selected, child(ren) aged 21 to 25 will still be able to enjoy access to The Club as guests, accompanied by the principal and spouse Members.

If you have a child or children who are between 21 and 25 years of age but are not registered in our system or if you would like to register your children in the Club membership database so that we can send you a reminder when the time comes, please furnish us with the name and date of birth of your child(ren) via email to dorothy Ang at [email protected] or Paulette Lee at [email protected].

For more information, please call the Membership Office at 6739-4331.

ART SCENE

Art On Gallery, a Singapore based art consultancy that specializes in korean contemporary art and craft, will be showcasing an exhibition titled “HUE (休): rest” from May 2 to June 30 at The American Club. Art On Gallery has been at the forefront of discovering and promoting rising korean artists in Singapore through its various exhibitions and projects.

With their slogan ‘Art in Life, Life in Art’, art consultancy Art On Gallery strives to bring art closer to the lives of the general public. Through this exhibition at The American Club, Art On Gallery is pleased to introduce artworks that represent naturalism as interpreted through the lenses of korean sentiments. Naturalism is one of the defining characters of Korean art. Many Korean artists have gained worldwide recognition with artworks that can instil a sense of subtle charm through crudeness and roughness. Exhibition guests will be able to engage with the natural beauty and lyrical emotions of korean contemporary art.

The title of this exhibition, HUE (休): REST, is a korean word that means to take a break, to pause or to praise the beauty. In this sense, HUE is an essential part of every human being’s lives, just like a small dose of vitamin is essential to keep a human body to function. Members come to The Club to escape from the busy daily cycles of life and to engage in activities through which they can rest their minds. Whether the artwork is intended for aesthetic appreciation or philosophical narrative, the artwork realizes its true worth and splendor when it exists embedded in people’s lives and offer fulfilment or suggest a dialogue every time a beholder lays eyes on them.

Join us for the art launch on friday, may 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the linkway. For reservations, please call Concierge at 6737-3411. For any inquiries or purchase, please contact Art On Gallery at 6611-8577 or [email protected].

On February 10, Club Members interested in learning more about collecting art attended an evening talk in the Colonial Room given by Mr Ho Sou Ping, owner of the “artcommune gallery” at Bras Basah Complex. An authority on the subject of Singapore art and artists, Mr Ho spent over an hour outlining the basic tenets of collecting quality art – art that would hold its value and perhaps even appreciate in value over time. Judging by the number and quality of questions asked, the detailed answers provided, and the fact that Club staff had to start hinting that it was time for Members to go, the talk was a success!

during the talk, Mr Ho discussed the value of art (in general), why people collect, how anyone can appreciate art, things every collector should know, and the investment potential of quality artwork. He also introduced some “dos and don’ts” for newcomers. Many of the points he made were common sense, but many others were not so obvious. To learn more, Members can visit the artcommune gallery website at www.artcommune.com.sg. Mr Ho offers talks like this, and others, on a regular basis at his gallery on weekends.

For Member enjoyment, artcommune gallery artwork, featuring Singapore art and artists, will grace our walls in November and december. So, you have something to look forward to, including perhaps another talk by Mr Ho!

This event was organized by your Fine Arts Committee, which plans to offer additional talks or interest. Please keep a lookout for our next art talk and bring your friends along – it may turn out to be a profitable experience!

ESSENTIALS

lycaemic indexGand he athlete

What is the glycaemic index (GI)?Glycaemic index (GI) is a numerical system that tells you how fast a particular food triggers a rise in your blood sugar levels. Food with a high GI will cause a fast rise in blood sugar while food with a low GI will bring about a slower rise.

Why is this important for the athlete? Many experts recommend a low glycaemic index meal two to four hours before an exercise session. It is thought that the slower, more consistent, release of energy will improve performance by delaying fatigue. It has also been found that low GI meals produce higher blood sugar and fatty acid levels during the latter stages of exercise. For endurance sports, this is very advantageous.

Formulated and produced in Australia, Gopher+ Low GI Isotonic Drink will be the first in a line-up of products providing slow and sustained energy release over a longer period of time, thus helping to maximize endurance and performance – instead of a sudden burst of energy which fades away quickly.

rban myths abound regarding the use and ingestion of caffeine,

and despite many people regarding it as a stimulant, higher doses have been found to exhibit drug-like

effects on the human body. Hence for a time caffeine was regarded as a controlled drug and placed on banned substances list of the IOC (International Olympic Committee).

Caffeine works by impersonating a chemical in your body called adenosine, binding to its receptors, but without actually activating them. Instead, it acts as a block to the receptors, allowing the brain’s natural stimulant, dopamine, to work more freely. So contrary to popular belief, caffeine itself is not a stimulant but is more a block on the natural “brake” in the body.

Now before you freak out and put Thyme Café on your “not-to-go-to” list, research is ongoing about caffeine and it was moved to the IOC in-monitoring list in 2004 (Wallman, Goh & Guelfi, 2010). That means that if it’s used, but not abused, we shouldn’t sweat it (pun intended).

So what caused the change of heart by the IOC and others towards caffeine? First and foremost, it is naturally abundant in many foods, and secondly, some recent studies done (Alpert, 2012; Glade, 2010) have shown that MOdERATE amounts of caffeine in fact:

by EarricA Mum & dad Special

1. increase energy availability,2. increase daily energy expenditure,3. decrease fatigue,4. enhance physical ANd motor performance,5. enhance cognitive performance,6. increase alertness and wakefulness,7. quicken reactions,8. increase accuracy of reactions,9. enhance short-term memory,10. increase the ability to make correct decisions, and11. increase the ability to concentrate and focus attention.

The list is by no means exhaustive, and begs the question, how much then is moderate? Glade’s research from 2010 concluded that any amount not exceeding 400 milligrams (mg) per day was considered moderate. Further research (Alpert, 2012; Wallman, Goh & Guelfi, 2010) found that 3 – 6 mg per kilogram of body weight was moderate consumption. depending on the type and size of your chosen brew, an average coffee can contain anywhere from 70 to 150 mg per cup.

Do these findings have any implications for weight loss and exercise?

Studies have shown that caffeine ingestion WITH exercise (Smith et al., 2010; Wallman, Goh & Guelfi, 2010) improves muscle mass,

fitness, and lipid profiles in overweight and obese women. For our male coffee drinkers who have yet to hit the gym, or who’ve been looking for a good reason to, studies done by these researchers in 2012 have conclusively shown that there is an ability to do more exercise without an accompanying increase in effort sensation after caffeine ingestion. That means, we should be seeing more of you guys in the Gym really soon!

FALL PROGRAM RE-ENROLMENTAll students who are currently enrolled in our Starfish Swim School Spring Program will be receiving a Re-enrolment Package during their swim lesson. Certificates and Re-enrolment Packages will be Monday, May 26 – Saturday, June 7

This re-enrolment package will include the following items:1. End-of-term certificate2. Fall Swimming 2014 enrolment form3. Letter from Aquatics Manager

For Members who are not in our current program and wish to sign up for our Fall Program, you can collect the enrolment forms from the Aquatics Counter from May 26. All new swimmers to the program will need to be assessed before being placed in the program.

Please note that we will not be disqualifying those swimmers aged 10 and under. Instead, their time will be recorded and the referee will issue them a notice informing them of the reason. They would have been disqualified if this had been an out-of-club swim meet. That way the swimmer will remember and adhere to FINA guidelines next time.

For those aged 11 years and above, disqualifications will be at the discretion of the referee. The swimmers’ times will not be recorded if they have been handed a dQ card.

41 THE AMERICAN CLUBMAY / JUN 2014

If you look up the definition of “team” in the dictionary, it will be along the lines of “a group of people who share a common interest”. Being a part of The American Club’s Shooting Stars team means so much more than that to the

50 swimmers who are a part of it. These kids whose ages range from 7 to 16 learn not only great swimming skills and techniques from our coaches, but also exactly what it means to be part of something bigger than just them. It means

finding a place where they can be themselves. It means challenging themselves and their team mates to become better and faster swimmers, while being surrounded

by others who are doing the same. And it means respecting coaches and making friends, some of whom they will keep for the rest of their lives. It also means learning how to cope and support each other in success and failure.

Since 2010, the coaching team, led by Brooke Skeers, and assisted by coaches Efren Tablan and Raymond Chang have taken the Swim Team to a significantly more competitive level in both training and competitions. The team has gradually increased their competition program from just 3 in-house meets and a few invitational’s to 13 swim meets a season. A big stepping stone was The Club joining the Merlion League in 2011. Along with The American Club, the league consists of The Tanglin Club, British Club, Marsden Swim School and Anglo-Chinese School (ACS). We hosted our first Merlion League Meet in 2012 where we had 190 swimmers competing from the 5 clubs. It was the largest meet in The Club’s history. This increased competition has exposed our swimmers to more consistent racing which in turn has vastly motivated the team to enhance their performance.

This March, the team achieved the highest milestone in The Club's Aquatics history with 10 swimmers competing in 44 events at the Singapore National Junior and Senior Championships. Swimmers were able to compete by attaining tough qualifying time standards in the February Singapore Swimming Association Trials Meet.

The ten swimmers who represented The Club were: Matthew Mitchell, Sophie Rysgaard, Zara Shilakis, Anna Bierley, Emma Bierley, karl Abou Ghannam, Ben vail, Libbey Stephenson, Eliza Fry and Alison Fry. The Singapore National Age Group Championship was a success with 2 top ten finishes, 14 top twenty finishes and 34 personal best times swum. Congratulations to these swimmers who represented The Club at the highest level in Singapore.

We are hoping to add to the Shooting Stars successes with the addition of Shan Goh who joined the Aquatics Team as Head Coach in February 2014. Shan swam very successfully in high-level Singapore competitions before moving to Australia to attend university. She is an Australian bronze level coach who began her coaching career in 2005 at the University of Western Australia Uniswim. Shan has vast experience in teaching a wide spectrum of swimmers from learn to swim, adults to triathletes, as well as having achieved great success in coaching elite swimmers at national age group championship level. We are excited to have Shan as part of our Aquatics Team, and for more exciting achievements ahead for our great Shooting Stars.
