It’s all about creating an awareness, allow-ing children to see, feel and experience ani-mals and agriculture. That’s how entrepre-neur and vegetable farmer Russell Roydescribes his latest endeavor — the Red BarnFarm Tour — a mobile agriculture exhibitand petting zoo all in one.

The Red Barn Farm Tour opened its doorsfor the first time to visitors at the recentBaton Rouge Balloon Festival. For three dayskids and parents alike shuffled past rabbits, chickens, pigs and an old 1937 John Deeretractor nicknamed Mr. Huey.

One of those making his way through theRed Barn at the early August festival wasCommissioner of Agriculture and ForestryMike Strain.

La. Agriculture & Forestry Today

Commissioner Mike Strain,D.V.M. said Louisiana Departmentof Agriculture and Forestryenforcement officers andWashington Parish Sheriff’s Officedeputies arrested a Mississippiman in late July suspected of tim-ber theft.

Anthony Charles Dillon, 38, 811Minnesota Avenue, McComb,Mississippi, was arrested byLDAF Forestry Enforcementinvestigators Mark Singleton andRoy St. Pierre Jr. on July 31 forallegedly stealing timber valued at$4,674.

Dillon, hired to thin a 30-acrestand of trees near Kentwood offHwy. 38, allegedly sold six loadsof the thinned timber productunder his name instead of therightful owner’s.

Singleton and St. Pierre arrestedDillon with the assistance ofInvestigator Lee Barkdull of theMississippi Agriculture TheftBureau and Detective Roy Stevensof the Washington Parish Sheriff’sOffice.

Also, a joint LDAF LivestockBrand Commission and IbervilleParish Sheriff’s Office investiga-

tion resulted in the July 25 arrest ofa 19-year-old and a juvenile forunauthorized use of a motor vehi-cle and criminal damage to proper-ty.

Darnell Hawkins of Maringouinand the juvenile, also ofMaringouin, allegedly used twotractors to shorten their journeythrough a cane field to travel fromMaringouin to Rosedale.

The tractors sustained damage totheir spray equipment during theunauthorized use.

An arrest of a second juvenile isexpected, investigators said.

LDAF Brand Commission offi-cer Johnny Steib and IbervilleParish Sheriff’s Office CaptainMike Sparks conducted the inves-tigation and made the arrests.

Strain said the LDAF investi-gates all criminal activity pertain-ing to the forestry and agriculturalindustries.

“Foresters and farmers havelarge investments in their land andequipment,” Strain said. “Theftand damage to woodlands andfarm equipment is a serious matterand will be investigated and prose-cuted.”

LDAF investigations yield arrests

Betting the farmcontinued from page 1After consulting with Tim Page, an animal science professor with theLSU AgCenter, Roy began construction of the mobile farm this past May.

“We try to show the children a slice of agriculture, allow them to seefirst hand the different varieties of chickens, goats and pigs. I just hopethat when they leave my mobile farm they have a better understanding offarming and agriculture,” Roy said.

Roy first began to take note of people’s fascination with agriculturewhen consumers would frequent his Amite vegetable farm. Roy grew

enough organic vegetables on hisfarm to supply nearly 500 familieswith fresh seasonal produce.

However, since August 2005 whenHurricane Katrina laid waste to mostof his produce farm, Roy has beensearching for a way to stay involvedin agriculture. He now thinks he’sfound his niche.

“We’ve been talking with schoolsuperintendents, members of themedia and officials with theLouisiana Farm Bureau about our

plans,” Roy said. “I think this mobile trailer will serve to educate andentertain children and adults alike. We just need to get the word out.”

Roy has tried to pattern his Red Barn Farm Tour on the same principlesas the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation’s Ag in the Classroom program.

The Farm Bureau’s AITC is dedicated to engaging and enlightening stu-dents and teachers across the United States about the importance of agri-culture in the world at large and in their own lives.

“This is our first real event and it looks promising. We have about 45days of bookings ahead of us and so far things are falling in place” Roysaid.

Roy has secured marketing and promotional help from AscensionMagazine Editor Joey Fryoux. Fryoux has been meeting with groups, schools and media organizations in order to promote the tour.

“There is a lot of interest in this project and its message and I’ve beenimpressed with the reaction of everyone I’ve talked to,” Fryoux said.

Roy believes the traveling Red Barn Farm is the beginning of what isin store for children in Louisiana wanting to learn more about agriculture.

He has plans to eventually incorporate the tractor Mr. Huey into a car-toon character and video series.

“I’d like to grow this project into a series of animated videos. The ani-mated videos and the characters in the video would be part of a certifiedschool curriculum where kids learn about nutrition and agriculture,” Roysaid.

For now, children and parents shuffle past Mr. Huey in hopes of pettinga miniature horse or holding a baby duck.

If the early numbers are any indication, nearly 500 paying customersvisited the Red Barn Farm during the balloon festival; this mobile agri-culture classroom should be a big hit.

Gautreaux living theLDAF values

Lisa Gautreaux was selected by CommissionerMike Strain as the employee who best exemplifiesthe “Living the Values Community Mindedness”statement of the Louisiana Department ofAgriculture and Forestry for the month of August.

Gautreaux is the Pesticide and EnvironmentalDivision Administrative Enforcement Coordinatorfor the Office of Agricultural and EnvironmentalSciences.

Her primary duties involve coordinating pesti-cide inspectionactivities withmore than 50 fieldi n s p e c t o r sstatewide.

Strain said,Gautreaux’s pro-fessionalism wasthe key to herselection.

“Lisa incorpo-rates a dedication

and driven objectivity into her work on behalf ofthe citizens of this state. That drive is reflected inher constantly striving to do the right thing,” Strainsaid. “The objective of making sure that all partiesof every pesticide process are treated fairly isdemonstrated in every case she supervises.”

Gautreaux was a primary driver in the conceptu-al design of the Pesticides and EnvironmentalPrograms System Integration (PEPSI). PEPSI is asoftware program designed to track and documentthe investigative aspects of every monitoring andinvestigation inspection conducted in the Pesticideand Environmental Programs Division.

Gautreaux was also instrumental in assuring thatPEPSI was aligned with the required componentsfor the Environmental Protection Agency’s inves-tigative reporting requirements conducted throughthe EPA and LDAF’s cooperative agreement workplan. Implementation of the plan has resulted inthe reduction of duplicate data inputs, greaterreport retrieval capabilities, an increased cred-itability with EPA and the establishment of agreater trust with the public.

“Lisa’s efforts in striving for the right thing anddoing the right thing has been extremely rewardingto the LDAF,” Strain said. “Lisa is fine example ofa public servant working within the value systemof the LDAF.

Roy is counting on his feathered and hoovedfriends to get children interested in all things agri-cultural. Nearly 500 paying customers clicked theRed Barn turnstills at the recent Baton Rouge HotAir Balloon Championship.

Sorghum showspromise for bio-energy market

Sonny Viator, the director of theLSU AgCenter's Iberia ResearchStation, says the potential forsweet sorghum to produce ethanolis economically feasible.

Viator spoke to Iberia Parish areafamers during a recent sugarcanefield day at the research station.

As fuel prices increase and cornprices remain high sorghum couldplay a larger role in the bioenergymarket, Viator said.

Earlier research had produced250 gallons of ethanol per acrefrom sweet sorghum, but a morerecent test at Houma resulted in500 gallons per acre, Viator said.

He said sorghum has potential asa rotational crop with cane andrice.

"I think it is going to be verymuch a complementary crop,"Viator said.

He said the varieties Theis,M81-E and Topper were grownthis year at the Iberia Station, butnew varieties are expected.

Several things have to belearned, including the best plant-ing times and which herbicidescan be used for the crop, he said.

Another speaker at event, BenLegendre, LSU AgCenter sugar-cane specialist, said a substitutefor glyphosate as a ripener on sug-arcane will have to be found ifRound-Up Ready sugarcane isreleased in a few years.

Home sweet homeA home is the largest and most important

purchase most Louisiana residents make. Tohelp homeowners get the most of thatinvestment while also doing their part forthe environment and future generations, theLSU AgCenter and its partners have devel-oped the Louisiana House Home andLandscape Resource Center.

Known as LaHouse for short, the complet-ed center opened to the public in July. It willbe open Wednesdays through Fridays from9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through the summer toallow the public to see some of theunique features incorporated into thehome’s construction.

Full-service touring operations areexpected to begin in the fall.

Located on the LSU campus inBaton Rouge, the center focuses onhousing and landscape techniquesspecific to our region’s subtropicalclimate and hazards.

The demonstration house isdesigned around the concept of creat-ing a sustainable home. Its designmakes it energy and resource effi-cient, more comfortable, safer, moredurable and healthier for its occupants– including exceptional indoor airquality and universal design.

An unusual and powerful strengthof the house and landscape is thatmany different options are presentedand homeowners may pick andchoose the options that are either mostaffordable or the ones that meet theirneeds or desires for optimal perform-ance.

Claudette Reichel, housing special-ist for the LSU AgCenter, said she isexcited LaHouse is finally completedafter five years of planned construc-tion.

“Prospective homeowners and

building professionals can observe firsthand and learn about the many solutions –from ways to protect a home from hurri-canes, floods, mold and termites to theemployment of highly energy efficient andhealthy building, air conditioning and light-ing systems to interiors that combine beau-ty, comfort and convenience with eco-friendly benefits,” Reichel said.

The house was exhibited for more than ayear in its mid-construction phases afterhurricanes Katrina and Rita struck the state.

Margaret Pierce, LaHouse Coordinator, said the visitors who toured the house dur-ing mid-construction learned about the lat-est building techniques to construct a morehurricane-proof home.

“Many state residents were forced to re-build their homes after Katrina and Rita,”Pierce said. “Nearly 7,000 people visitedduring the year after the hurricanes.”

The LaHouse will not only serve as aneducational showcase, but the garage isactually a multimedia classroom for audi-

ences such as builders, designers and con-sumers to get the latest, science-based infor-mation or to rent for their own educationalprograms. Cutaways and an unfinishedexhibit room will allow visitors to see thespecial components used in construction.

Featured attractions include not only thehouse itself but also the 7-acres of groundsaround the home. The green design is anexample of sustainable landscaping. A pondon the site will play dual roles in stormwa-ter pollution prevention and in the heating

and cooling of the house through ageothermal heat exchange system.Winding trails will lead visitorsthrough drought-resistant nativeplant beds, a rain garden and otherspecial horticultural exhibits, and aprogrammable irrigation system willminimize the amount of water used tokeep the plants healthy.

The LaHouse Resource Center wasmade possible by the support of part-ners and private contributors whoshare its vision of shaping the futurewith sustainable housing and devel-opment. LaHouse key partnersinclude the Louisiana Department ofNatural Resources and the U.S.Department of Energy’s BuildingAmerica Program.

Key contributors include Entergyof Louisiana, Paula Garvey Manship, the Borate-Treated Wood Alliance(U.S. Borax, Osmose and Louisiana-Pacific), Louisiana Home BuildersAssociation, Roy Domangue, Roy O.Martin Lumber Co. and BuildingScience Corp.
