Internshipsmedia industry Placement

This is a collaborative venture between the University and various media organisations in the community. The placement, which is highly recommended, allows students to gain valuable work experience and contribute toward a project for their host organisation, which counts towards their overall grade.

This internship is open to University of Adelaide Bachelor of Media Students only.

For further information please visit: www.hss.adelaide.edu.au/media_studies/students/notes

Arts internship

Would you like to work in an organisation as part of your degree and learn new skills to help you prepare for the world of work? If so, think about enrolling in an Arts Internship course (subject).

The Arts Internship places students in a host organisation for one day per week throughout the semester. Students undertake a research project on a topic of interest, and of relevance to the host organisation. Students are jointly supervised by an academic and a member of staff at the host organisation.

Arts Internship students will be expected to attend and participate in a series of seminars as well as meet their academic supervisor during their course. At the end of the course, students give an oral presentation about their project and hand up a report of approximately 7000 words. The Arts Internship counts towards 50% of one semester’s workload.

Students are asked to apply for a place in the internship, indicating their area of interest. Selection is based on Grade Point Average (GPA) in completed university studies.

More information is available at: www.hss.adelaide.edu.au/internships

Why study the Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing)? The Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) is designed to provide students with a sound background in business, together with an understanding of marketing’s role within and between organisations. People seeking careers in marketing are expected to have well-developed decision-making skills and to be innovative in their approach to business problems and situations.

As a result the marketing courses are combined with general business studies, and the development of practical skills and knowledge is integrated with an understanding of current theories and the latest research.

This degree not only provides grounding in marketing theory, but also provides opportunities to prepare marketing reports and plans, undertake a diagnostic case study of an exporting firm, analyse advertisements in a variety of media, and apply market research as part of a group project that focuses on a real business problem.

What careers can the Bachelor of Commerce lead to?The degree is designed to equip you for future business roles such as: financial services

officer, fund and portfolio manager, accountant, management consultant, manager/business management, market researcher, marketer/marketing manager, ministerial adviser, business analyst, business consultant, commodities or futures trader, parliamentary adviser, policy adviser, political adviser, public servant, finance manager, financial adviser, financial systems/analyst, foreign affairs, or government/corporate policy adviser.

Professional AccreditationThe University’s business programs have been awarded a five-year international accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB): www.aacsb.edu/accreditation

AACSB accreditation is the hallmark of excellence in business education and has been earned by less than 5% of the world’s business schools.

This means the University of Adelaide’s Business Degrees are recognised internationally for their high quality and successful graduates.

This program enables students to gain credit towards Certified Professional Marketer (CPM) status awarded by the Australian Marketing Institute (AMI). This professional accreditation, recognised throughout Australia and the Pacific Basin, signals a full professional in the marketing area.

Students may apply to undertake the Bachelor of Laws degree concurrently with the Bachelor of Commerce degrees. This double degree option ensures perspectives from other disciplines are brought to bear and that studies in Law are seen in the wider social context.

Completion of a double degree program uniquely places graduates to take up some of the specialist career opportunities offered beyond the law.

Students already enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) degree may also apply for entry to the Bachelor of Laws towards the end of their first year of full-time study. If accepted, they begin in their second year and may, with appropriate selection of courses, complete the two programs in the same timeframe.

Please refer to www.ua.edu.au/degrees or the Law Undergraduate Program Guide for further information.

Why study the Bachelor of Media? This innovative program combines the university’s strong research culture with a theoretical and practical focus on the latest developments in digital and interactive media.

Through a strong grounding in media history, theory, analysis and creative practices, you will be prepared for cross-media and professional communication work in business, government and community organisations, as well as independent media work. You will learn to think of yourself as a critical consumer of media product, and an innovative, ethical and professional practitioner for a range of media.

This degree suits resourceful and committed students who want to prepare for the new fields and occupations created by digitisation and networking changes affecting mainstream media, and society more generally.

Bachelor of Media students can also now add a Marketing specialisation by undertaking eight

courses in place of their upper level electives, increasing their employment prospects upon graduation. Opportunities to undertake an internship with a professional organisation are also available.

What careers can the Bachelor of Media lead to?Graduates have found successful careers in numerous roles. Some of these include:

• AdvertisingOfficer

• Broadcaster

• Columnist

• CommunicationsOfficer

• Copywriter

• ElectronicPublisher

• FeatureWriter

• FilmCritic

• FilmDirector

• Journalist

• NewsPresenter

• Producer

• ProductionAssistant

• ProjectOfficer

• WebContentManager

• Writer.

Program StructureIn first year, you will take core courses on the impact of new digital technologies on industry and user practices, study how Internet distribution platforms are transforming the way

we communicate, the role of broadcast radio and television, and creative digital story techniques.

These courses combine media history and theory with the study of professional media practices. Advanced Level core courses include media law, media research, global media, online democracy, professional practices, media and creative theory, and a range of options including a media industry placement.

The placement, which is highly recommended, allows students to gain valuable work experience and contribute toward a project for their host organisation.

Work PlacementAll Bachelor of Media students have the opportunity to take part in a Media Industry Placement as an elective toward their degree. It is highly recommended for those who wish to enter the industry directly after completion of their undergraduate degree.

The placement allows students to gain work experience, and contribute toward a host organisation project. Students should negotiate their own placements with organisations of their choice, after discussion with the Head of Discipline. Proposed projects require sign-off by the Media Industry Placement Convenor and Head of School. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the Media Industry Placement does not clash with their other courses.

Students may elect to do the Placement during vacation time if staff are available to supervise them, and the host organisation and the University agree on a mutually acceptable time frame.

HonoursGraduates of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences are encouraged to further their studies by undertaking an Honours year (one year of full-time study). It includes advanced coursework and a research component where you will produce an extended piece of work (thesis) on a chosen topic in consultation with an academic supervisor.

The Honours year is considered to be a year of full-time study and regular attendance at classes is required. It is possible to do Honours over two years on account of special circumstances.

The prerequisite for Honours study is at least a Credit standard in a specified major. Applications are called for by Departments/Disciplines in October and November each year. Applications are made to the relevant Discipline offices, not through SATAC. Further details on Honours are available from Schools and Disciplines in the Faculty—visit www.hss.adelaide.edu.au for more information.

Honours is the normal prerequisite for entry to a Higher Degree by Research at the Masters and Doctor of Philosophy level, and is also preferred by many employers.
