What Does This Mean?
Socialism
• Government has an increased role in society
• Main goal is to meet the basic needs for all and to provide employment for many
• The goal is to have a classless society– No poverty, middle class, rich– Citizens are equal
Socialism
• More social programs to ensure a certain standard of living for their citizens
• Medical care & education is free or very cheap
• Businesses & individuals pay MUCH higher taxes than those in a capitalistic society
• The government runs most industries– Telephone companies, banks, electric companies, water, gas,
transportation, etc..
• Sweden, Canada, The United Kingdom use this philosophy
Socialism Monopoly Rules
• Pass Go you get $150
• Free Parking money is distributed equally to everyone
• Income Tax spaces are $400
• Luxury Tax is $125 each player
• Jail costs $75 to get out
Chance Cards• Visit the railroad
– Government owned– Pay the government twice the rent
• Get out of Jail Free now costs $50
• All utilities are paid to government
• Bank Dividend: Player receives no money
• Building & Loan Matures: Owe govt. $50
• General Repairs: $40/house & $130/hotel
• Poor Tax: Player has to redistribute their wealth so that they have no more than others
• Chairman of the Board: Other players must pay you so that wealth is redistributed

Communism• Government controls factors of production
• No private ownership of property or capital
• Built around the belief that if goods are owned by government they are available to everyone
– Promotes a Classless society– Government acts as the community
• All workers are assigned jobs– No unemployment– Always get paid (regardless if you go or not)
• Housing & education are determined by government
• Medical Care is free
• No financial incentive for people to work harder
• Examples include Cuba and North Korea
Communism Rules• Everyone starts with $900
– Unless you had less on Thursday
• No properties can be purchased– No one can own land– Rent must be paid to the government
• All properties require rent
• Every time you pass go collect $100
• No money goes to free parking
• There is no income or luxury tax – Taxes are taken out of your check automatically– There are no luxuries
• If placed in jail, skip two turns
