Marlins great start key to pivotal

| The Townsville Marlins found themselves up 21-0 at the start of
the second quarter and that lead was good enough for them to hang
on for an important win over the Adelaide Falcons, 34-27.The great
start was handed too them by errors from the Falcons. Punt Returner
Jarrod Elgey carried the ball in the wrong arm and a good hit by
ALbert Murphy forced the ball free. The Marlins recovered at the
Falcons 4 and one play later JP Gutherson strolled in after taking
a toss to the right. Then Andrew Mano was picked by Rogan Allison
as he tried to force the ball into the end zone. Again one play
later Brooke McDonnell came deep over the middle and he found a
hole in the zone coverage and raced away with blinding speed, 80
yards to pay dirt. The Marlins had scored twice on back to back
offensive plays that took just 15 seconds with the ball.It became
21-0 when Greg Watene crashed over after a long drive and the score
line looked like it could be heading for the record books. "We
needed this win today. I thought we were back to our very best
particularly early" said Coach Chris Simpson. But he must have been
concerned at the way his team allowed the Falcons back into the
game. The teams matched field goals before Zac Mauro crossed before
the end of the first half after catching a 20 yard bullet from
Mano. At 24-10 it felt like the next scorer would be crucial. The
Falcons proved to be that team not once but twice however on both
occasions good drives were stopped by outstanding Red Zone defence
from Townsville. Brodie Sullivan kicked two field goals.Again the
teams traded 3 pointers in the 4th quarter before McDonnell capped
off his MVP performance with a 68 yard screamer. Taking a screen
pass he junked inside then out. His speed caught out a number of
defenders and he was gone. The Falcons scored late through Tight
End Sam Crocker but the onside kick failed to go the 10 yards and
despite a solid come back by the home side it was not enough.
