inspired by
Jesus Christ to:
Gather together

Go into the world
as his disciples
Let’s keep up the energy in
our parish! Fr Joe
The parish is humming along. The parish pastoral council and the local leadership teams at the four parish centres are working well. The weekend parish collec-ons are holding up rather well (this week $13,486 averaged over the last four weeks), and you are demonstra-ng support of the preparatory stages of the Australian Plenary Council 2020.
So! Let’s take another look at some other things happening that can be occasions when we try to do things together as parish!
Sounds of Celebra4on S of C has been an event held at St Peter’s Coolum since 2015 but it sustains interest across the parish.
This year’s S of C features the recently formed parish choir that draws singers from all four parish centres.
With conductor Linda Ge<en, musical director Larraine O’Brien and Peter Howard AM master of ceremonies, this choir has made stunning progress, as you will hear, if you can come along this Sunday (today) to St Peter’s, Elizabeth Street Coolum, at 2pm.
Tickets at the door $15 (no need to pre-purchase), and a unique mulled wine offering for you on arrival. (The MW enhances everything that follows!)
Be sure to wear your parish name badge if you have one.
Enjoy the gourmet delicacies served during intermission while mingling with other folk from across the parish, and perhaps make new friends.
The Italian long table lunch The community at St Catherine of Siena church at Sippy Downs are preparing a great spread of Italian foods to mark the fi/eenth anniversary of St Catherine’s church dedica-on on Sunday 13 October. Games for the children and young people from 11am, lunch from noon.
This is another occasion when all parish folk, visitors and holidaymakers are especially welcome.
The organisers need to know how many people are coming. Register on the aEendance sheet at St Catherine’s a/er Mass this Sunday or next Sunday. Or phone Rob MatcheE 0409 576 170.
Please bring your favourite Italian dish to share.
Also, that a/ernoon at St Catherine’s, you might like to stay on from 2.30pm and join in their Plenary Council Listening and Discernment second session, which should go well a/er una goccia of Brunello di Montelcino over lunch.
Just like this!
All proceeds go towards the support of the Coolum SVDP.
Guest duo feature ar-sts Hugo Fitz-Herbert OAM and Fr John will get your toes tapping, so do come along.
THERE WAS A SUGGESTION
THAT THE CONGREGATION
MIGHT BE BETTER ABLE TO
PARTICIPATE IN THE SUNG
RESPONSE AFTER THE FIRST
READING AT WEEKEND MASS
IF THE MUSICAL NOTATION
WAS SUPPLIED AS WELL AS
TEXT. PLEASE LET US KNOW IF
THIS IS HELPFUL

Looking into the signs of the 4mes
by the light of faith by John Francis Fitz-Herbert
We are not called to serve merely in order to receive a reward, but rather to imitate God, who made Himself a servant for our love.—Francis, Bishop of Rome Many years ago, + John Bathersby (as the former Archbishop of Brisbane) said that when he became an ordained priest, he believed this would guarantee him the promise of ‘eternal life’, ‘heaven’ or salva-on. Over the following decades, he realised his belief raised more ques-ons for him than he had first believed. So Archbishop Bathersby undertook what might be described as a journey of personal conversion. One external sign of his conversion was his personal move (in the early 1960s) from giving Toowoomba congrega-ons a fixed sermon every Sunday to ‘breaking open the proclaimed Word in the midst of the life experiences of the bap-sed in the homily’ (from the early-mid 1970s). I recall + John Bathersby’s personal sharings as I ponder anew Francis’ insight that Chris-an service is primarily imita-on of Godself, who became incarnate as the servant for our love. It is not the service of the neighbour in order to seek a future ‘heavenly reward’ from Almighty God. However God may respond to us when we pass from this life through the valley of death is between God and each person, who has been known, treasured and loved by God, as words within the Word. So: what may be some signs of imita-ng God as a servant for our love? Pondering some events occurring around us over these weeks, we might include: • reorien-ng our aEen-on to the ‘common good’ and
the ‘common wealth’ of our Australian society; • facing the science of a changing environment as
people created ‘imago Dei’ and crea-on bea-ng with the pulse of divine energy;
• listening and encountering the growing voices and ac-ons of contemporary prophets - of all ages - who are con-nuing to call into ques-on the ‘priority of the economy’ and the ‘genera-on of personal wealth’ over and above the preserva-on of many forms of life;
• analysing the assump-ons that drive all ‘isms’ in everyday conversa-ons e.g. sexism, racism, colonialism, and rampant uncontrolled capitalism;
• transforming the ongoing-care of ci-zens who are now living longer lives;
• discussing the contribu-on that the Chris-an ethic of love, generosity, and responsibility may make to our human encounters at home, community gatherings, and educa-onal seNngs;
• building a culture of compassion and empathy in response to all human need in the face of subtle dehumanisa-on;
• renewing and reforming all ins-tu-ons that fail the basic litmus test of promo-ng and enhancing human dignity and the care of crea-on; and
• promo-ng the diversity of human response within cultures as a sign of the lavish love of God for all.
Social Jus4ce Sunday The Australian Catholic Bishops’ Social Jus-ce Statement for 2019 – 2020, Making it Real: Genuine human encounter in our digital world, affirms the posi-ve possibili-es for encounter and solidarity offered by new digital media, while warning of those elements of our digital world that may be harmful. These include informa-on overload; social isola-on; marginalisa-on of the vulnerable; consumerism and fake news.
The Statement reminds us that the new digital media cannot be seen as neutral or ‘unaffected by any moral considera-ons’. While many users do not realise it, the core business of social media plaQorms is to sell adver-sing and maximise profits. People’s personal lives may be reduced to data that is traded for profit or power, and it is used to target and influence us in ways previously unthinkable. Pushing users to more extreme posi-ons and promo-ng fake news and conspiracy theories sells, but this is at odds with human solidarity.
The Statement amplifies Pope Francis’ call to us to ‘boldly become ci-zens of the digital world’, with the image of the Good Samaritan as our inspira-on. We are called not only to love our neighbour, but to bring the love of God to the new global neighbourhood. The Statement points out that we are called not just to be inhabitants of this new digital world, but ac-ve ci-zens shaping it. All of us – whether we are users, communi-es, industrial or poli-cal leaders – have a role to play in rejec-ng hatred, divisions and falsehoods. We have a duty to foster a neighbourhood that promotes those human aEributes and social values that lend themselves to genuine human encounter – love, understanding, beauty, goodness, truth and trustworthiness, joy and hope.

MAROOCHYDORE BRANCH EXECUTIVE WITH FR JOSH WHITEHEAD. L-R: BROTHERS JOHN LEGG,
PETER BAARTZ, MALCOLM HUGHES, ANTHONY STAUNTON, KERRY BRACE AND KEN JOHNSON.
Please respect parish church furniture 20 pews have been vandalised in the new Stella Maris church and have to be removed temporarily for repair. Damage includes graffi-, scratching, and chipping. Allowing that the church is open only for religious ceremonies, this outcome is disappoin-ng. Care for church furniture is everybody’s responsibility. This applies to all four churches.
Safeguarding Compliments Mr Pat Casey, Volunteer Coordinator for the Archdiocese, visited the parish on Thursday re registra-on of blue cards and police checks. There are now 400 parishioners who are compliant, a record in this Archdiocese. The parish acknowledges the good work of Robyn Jewry and the parish office team.
