THE 56th WORLD DAY OF VOCATIONS The Fourth Sunday of Easter is "Good Shepherd Sunday" - with the theme of the Resurrection of Jesus, we read the Gospel of the Good Shepherd, and meditate on the living Jesus Who cares for and shepherds His flock, the Church. The reading of this Gospel is an occasion to think about the question of "vocations". A vocation is a call from God - and every Christian is called at Baptism to be a follower of Jesus, a disciple, a witness. We spend the first twenty years or so of life figuring out how Jesus wants us to serve and what is our vocation. The most common Christian Vocation is Matrimony. This vocation forms one of the strongest foundations of our Church. Others are called to priesthood or religious consecration. The question of priesthood is appropriate for Good Shepherd Sunday, since through His priests Jesus continues to shepherd His Church. At present, in the United States, we are in what is called a "vocation crisis". In this country, the Church was very accustomed to an abundance of vocations to priestly and religious life. For example, there was a time in our Diocese when every parish had three, four or five priests and every parish school had 8-16 sisters. Every year, classes of 20 to 30 young men were ordained to the priesthood - in these years, we consider a class of 5 to be large. Pope Francis has issued his Message for the World Day of Vocations. He has called it: ``The courage to take a risk for God's promise''. In this Message, the Holy Father says: In encountering the Lord, some may feel the attraction of a call to the consecrated life or to the ordained

priesthood. It is a discovery that can excite and at the same time frighten us, since we feel called to become ``fishers of men'' in the barque of the Church by giving totally of ourselves in commitment to faithful service of the Gospel and our brothers and sisters. Such a decision carries the risk of leaving everything behind to follow the Lord, to devote ourselves completely to him, and to share in his work. Many kinds of interior resistance can stand in the way of making this decision, especially in highly secularized contexts where there no longer seems to be a place for God and for the Gospel. Places where it is easy

to grow discouraged and fall into the ``weariness of hope''. And yet, there can be no greater joy than to risk one's life for the Lord! I would like to say this especially to you, the young. Do not be deaf to the Lord's call. If he calls you to follow this path, do not pull your oars into the boat, but trust him. Do not yield to fear, which paralyzes us before the great heights to which the Lord points us. Always remember that to those who leave their nets and boat behind, and follow him, the Lord promises the joy of a new life that can fill

our hearts and enliven our journey. Dear friends, it is not always easy to discern our vocation and to steer our life in the right direction. For this reason, there needs to be a renewed commitment on the part of the whole Church - priests, religious, pastoral workers and educators - to provide young people in particular with opportunities for listening and discernment. There is a need for a youth ministry and a vocational promotion that can open the way to discovering God's plan, above all through prayer, meditation on God's word, eucharistic adoration and spiritual accompaniment.

LA 56ème JOURNÉE DES VOCATIONS Le Quatrième Dimanche de Pâques est le "Dimanche du Bon Berger" - avec le thème de la Résurrection de Jésus, nous lisons l'Évangile du Bon Berger, et nous méditons sur le Jésus vivant Qui prend soin de Son troupeau, l'Église, comme un pasteur. La lecture de cet Évangile est une occasion de penser de la question des "vocations". Une vocation est un appel de Dieu et chaque Chrétien est appelé au Baptême à être un partisan de Jésus, un disciple, un témoin. Nous passons les premiers vingt ans de notre vie en discernant comment Jésus veut que nous servions et quelle est notre vocation. La Vocation Chrétienne la plus commune est celle du Mariage. Cette vocation forme une des fondations les plus fortes de notre Église. Des autres sont appelés au sacerdoce ou à la consécration religieuse. La question du sacer-doce est bien pour le Dimanche du Bon Berger, parce que c'est par Ses prêtres que Jésus con-tinue à donner pâturage à Son Église. Au présent, aux États-Unis, nous nous trouvons dans une dite "crise de vocations". Dans ce pays, l'Église était habituée à une abondance de vocations à la vie sacerdotale et religieuse. Par exemple, il y avait un moment au Diocèse de Brooklyn et Queens où chaque paroisse avait trois, quatre ou cinq prêtres, et chaque école paroissiale avait 8-16 sœurs. Ces jours n'existent plus. Et aussi, chaque année, classes de 20 à 30 jeunes hommes étaient ordonnés au sacerdoce - main-tenant nous considérons une classe de 5 comme un grand numéro. Pape François a donné son Message pour la Journée Mondiale des Vocations. Il l'a titré: ``Le courage de risquer pour la promesse de Dieu. Voici une partie du Message du Saint Père: Dans la rencontre avec le Seigneur certains peuvent sentir

``attrait d'un appel à la vie consacrée ou au sacerdoce ordonné. Il s'agit d'une découverte qui enthousiasme et qui en même temps fait peur, se sentant appelés à devenir ``pêcheurs d'hommes'' dans la barque de l'Église à travers une offrande totale de soi-même et l'engagement d'un service fidèle à l'Évangile et aux frères. Ce choix comporte le risque de tout laisser pour suivre le Seigneur et de se consacrer complètement à lui pour devenir collaborateurs de son œuvre. De nombreuses résistances intérieures peuvent empêcher une décision de ce genre, comme aussi dans certains contextes très

sécularisés, où il semble ne plus y avoir de place pour Dieu et pour l'Évangile, on peut se décourager et tomber dans la ``lassitude de l'espérance''. Pourtant il n'y a pas de joie plus grande que de risquer sa vie pour le Seigneur! En particulier à vous, les jeunes, je voudrais dire: ne soyez pas sourds à l'appel du Seigneur! S'il vous appelle pour ce chemin, ne tirez pas votre épingle du jeu et faites-lui confiance. Ne vous laissez pas contaminer par la peur, qui nous paralyse devant les hauts sommets que le

Seigneur nous propose. Rappelez-vous toujours que, à ceux qui laissent les filets et la barque pour le suivre, le Seigneur promet la joie d'une vie nouvelle, qui comble le cœur et anime le chemin. Très chers, il n'est pas toujours facile de discerner sa vocation et d'orienter sa vie d'une façon juste. Pour cela, il faut un engagement renouvelé de la part de toute l'Église - prêtres, personnes consacrées, animateurs pastoraux, éducateurs - afin que s'offrent, surtout aux jeunes, des occasions d'écoute et de discernement. Il faut une pastorale pour les jeunes et les vocations qui aide à la découverte du projet de Dieu, spécialement à travers la prière, la méditation de la Parole de Dieu, l'adoration eucharistique et l'accompagnement spirituel.

LA 56va JORNADA MUNDIAL DE LAS VOCACIONES El Cuarto Domingo de Pascua es el "Domingo del Buen Pastor" - con el tema de la Resurrección de Jesús, leemos el Evangelio del Buen Pastor, y meditamos al Jesús vivo Quien cuida el rebaño de Su Iglesia como Pastor. La lectura de este Evangelio es una ocasión de pensar de las "vocaciones". Una vocación es una llamada de Dios - y todo cristiano está llamado desde Bautismo a ser un seguidor de Jesús, un discípulo, un testigo. Pasamos los primeros veinte años, más o menos, discerniendo cómo Jesús quiere que Le sirvamos y qué es nuestra vocación. La vocación más común de un cristiano es el Matrimonio. Esta vocación forma una de las bases más fuertes de la Iglesia. Otros están llamados al sacerdocio o a la consagración religiosa. La cuestión del sacerdocio cabe bien el Domingo del Buen Pastor, porque a través de Sus sacerdotes, Jesús continúa a pastorear Su Iglesia. Hoy día, en los Estados Unidos, nos encontramos en lo que llaman una "crisis de vocaciones". En este país, la Iglesia estaba acostumbrada a una abundancia de vocaciones a la vida sacerdotal y religiosa. Por ejemplo, hubo un tiempo en la Diócesis de Brooklyn y Queens cuando toda parroquia tenía a tres, cuatro o cinco sacerdotes, y cada escuela parroquial tenía entre 8-16 hermanas. Aquellos días están bien pasados. Además, cada años clases de 20 a 30 hombres jóvenes se ordenaban al sacerdocio - hoy día llamamos el año bendito cuando hay 5 ordenados. Papa Francisco ha dado su Mensaje para la Jornada Mundial de las Vocaciones. Lo ha llamado: ``La valentía de arriesgar por la promesa de Dios. El Santo Padre dice: En el encuentro con el Señor, alguno puede sentir la

fascinación de la llamada a la vida consagrada o al sacerdocio ordenado. Es un descubrimiento que entusiasma y al mismo tiempo asusta, cuando uno se siente llamado a convertirse en ``pescador de hombres'' en la barca de la Iglesia a través de la donación total de sí mismo y empeñándose en un servicio fiel al Evangelio y a los hermanos. Esta elección implica el riesgo de dejar todo para seguir al Señor y consagrarse completamente a él, para convertirse en colaboradores de su obra. Muchas resistencias interiores pueden obstaculizar una

decisión semejante, así como en ciertos ambientes muy secularizados, en los que parece que ya no hay espacio para Dios y para el Evangelio, se puede caer en el desaliento y en el ``cansancio de la esperanza''. Y, sin embargo, no hay mayor gozo que arriesgar la vida por el Señor. En particular a vosotros, jóvenes, me gustaría deciros: No seáis sordos a la llamada del Señor. Si él os llama por este camino no recojáis los remos en la barca y confiad en él.

No os dejéis contagiar por el miedo, que nos paraliza ante las altas cumbres que el Señor nos propone. Recordad siempre que, a los que dejan las redes y la barca para seguir al Señor, él les promete la alegría de una vida nueva, que llena el corazón y anima el camino. Queridos amigos, no siempre es fácil discernir la propia vocación y orientar la vida de la manera correcta. Por este motivo, es necesario un compromiso renovado por parte de toda la Iglesia - sacerdotes, religiosos, animadores pastorales, educadores - para que se les ofrezcan, especialmente a los jóvenes, posibilidades de escucha y de discernimiento. Se necesita una pastoral juvenil y vocacional que ayude al descubrimiento del plan de Dios, especialmente a través de la oración, la meditación de la Palabra de Dios, la adoración eucarística y el acompañamiento espiritual.
