GT Intern-Mentor Program Journal Entry Lilllian Dehart is interning at Manor Woods Elementary. “At my internship at Manor Woods Elementary School, I had the opportunity to teach a lesson to the second grade class. They made fall landscape paintings. First, they learned what a landscape was. We then discussed the importance of a horizon line. I gave a demonstration on how to paint a fall landscape using black crayons to outline, then watercolors to paint it. The students used fall colors in their landscapes to indicate the season. It was very rewarding to show them how to do something that I love, and the kids real-ly enjoyed painting. My mentor commented that I did a nice job, and that I project my voice well. However, I did forget to mention the paintings must be vertical, not horizontal. After I passed out the papers, I tried to explain this concept, but some students did not understand. Thankfully, I talked to those students individu-ally and got them painting vertically on the back of their pieces. Next week, they are going to collage a scarecrow on top, I can't wait!”
Leadership U Congratulations to Christy Ahn and Nik Mehta both members of the Leadership U Class of 2016 with gradu-
ation this December. Offered through Leadership Howard County, Leadership U is open to high school
sophomores who live or attend school in Howard County. This four-month program begins in August before
the student’s junior year with a full week of teambuilding, followed by bi-monthly sessions held on Sundays
through December. Leadership U offers students a behind-the scenes look at how their community works --
from Howard County’s government leaders to healthcare, public safety, businesses and services, and the
nonprofit community. Students become acquainted with community issues and challenges, and work in
teams to discuss, reflect upon and develop solutions for issues affecting them and their peers. They also de-
velop mentoring relationships with adult community leaders, and hone their presentation skills.
