We are very proud of the efforts of this year's cohort and look forward to being able to celebrate their success at both our Graduation Ceremony and School Formal. Last week we held our first School Captains handover day at Bankwest's Brisbane City Headquarters. This year's Captain Team of Corilee, Rachel, Alosina and Clayton have done an outstanding job over the last twelve months, and it was pleasing to be able to hear of the impact the role has had on them, BankWest mentors and their parents. It was also great to see the thoughtful advice passed on to our 2017 Captains and their parents. I know our 2017 team of Keighley, Sui, Mason and Nathan already have big plans and the support they have received in these early stages has been first class. Our annual Sports Awards presentation was also held last week. The event recognised the outstanding performances of our students on the sporting field over the year, but it is the ongoing work to help develop our athletes off the field that we will be continuing to develop next year. Our work to continue to develop truly professional excellence programs will involve a tighter focus on meeting high expectations across all subjects and include ongoing attention to attendance and behaviour standards to help position our students to be able to meet the expectations of professional sport after school. In line with this I was asked to be part of a panel at a recent Met East Sports Breakfast to discuss the impact of sport at Marsden SHS. The Breakfast included presentations from the Director-General of Education and former Olympian and Griffith University Coordinator Duncan Free. Joining me on the panel was Rugby League legend Wally Lewis and his wife Jackie to talk about their perspective as parents and Queensland Rugby Union CEO Richard Barker. The overwhelming message of the morning was that sport can be a valuable avenue to develop skills and attitude to support learning and lifelong success. As a school we have an obligation to teach this through our excellence programs and our PE and Sport classes, with a number of parallels to the outstanding work that is occurring in our Performance Academy. Congratulations to our ELP Coordinator Emily Dunleavy who was recognised at the recent Queensland College of Teachers Awards. Emily was presented with her award by the Minister for Education Kate Jones at a special ceremony in Brisbane. With the event taking place in the middle of another successful ELP Camp, Emily drove back to continue her work with our students in a sign of the dedication and commitment she has to our school. This week I have been in China to sign a Sister School agreement and to attend a Forum for School Principals on behalf of our Education Department. The visit to Jiangsu Xishan Senior High School in Wuxi, China provided a great opportunity to discuss and consider opportunities for future collaboration, while also highlighting the ongoing focus on our facility development at Marsden. Finally a special congratulations to our MTC Leaders who presented at Palm Beach Currumbin SHS last week. The team made a great impression with staff and students and demonstrated the values of our school to the highest possible standard. Well done, and thank you to Miss Mulcahy for her work in helping to organise the visit. Andrew Peach Executive Principal

Basketball Update

Year 12 Good-bye Basketball Game

On Halloween, some kids dress up and go door to door tryingto get some candy, I believe they call this trick or treating.

The year 12’s of the Basketball Excellence students had adifferent trick in mind, they took the opportunity to have onelast game against the staff. One last opportunity to inflict somerevenge for 5 years of sprints, fitness, training, pain and hoursof drills. Or, more importantly 60 minutes to show the staff howfar they have come in their basketball skills over the last 5 years.

Staff and students alike came down to see if the students wouldget their revenge or would it be the teachers giving the students

one final lesson. Tension filled the air, staff tried to stretch outold legs, and Milan did what Milan always does, he smiles.

The students took a quick lead, taking advantage of the oldlegs of the teachers. Jahrome and Mr Thomas played a nicegame of leap frog, with Mr Thomas ending up on his back. Thestudents were outrunning, out rebounding, and out playing theteachers. Cameron made a three, Milan controlled the boards, while Reyster muscled control the game. Rhys and Cameronadded to the student’s control of the point with their size andstrength. Cullen, Corilee, and Jacelen had their jump shotsgoing early to help the students build their lead.

But after an initial show of strength and skill and speed by thestudents, the teachers clawed their way back. Dogged defencefrom Jevahn, and some great running from prac teacher MrAnderson, helped the teachers take control. The experience, team work and ball movement of the teachers had the studentsscrambling all over the court. The teachers took the lead, andnever looked back building a lead of 27 points after 40 minutesof basketball.

Strong performances from Mr MVP Thomas, Mr Growden(lay-up training starts Monday), and Mr Anthony (he’s stilllooking for his jump shot, if anyone sees it please let him know)led the teachers on both ends of the court. Mr Clark added tothe team with great defence, referee management and dauntingno look passes.

When Mr Camps got into the game, he found range from the3 point line but his highly touted half-court shot never foundthe mark. Mr Hammond got into the game adding a nice sparkof life off the bench, until a sniper took out his ankle. As thegame entered the 45th minute of play, the teachers lookeduntouchable, unbelievably strong, and unfortunately tired. Asthe clock wound down, the teachers struggled.

The students came roaring back, bringing the game back to6 points. The teachers were done, with no energy left, wouldthey get the win? Or would the student’s youth and superiorconditioning help bring home the win. But as time ticked downand the game was in the balance, the teachers found a lastgasp of energy ensuring the students would get no closer. Thegame finished 89-83.

A huge thankyou to all the staff and students who participated, the staff and students who came down to support, and a greatbig thank you to Micayla for Refereeing and Masyn for scoring.Keep training students!

All Things ELPThis term, the ELP students were lucky enough to attend a2 night camp at Camp QLD, Lake Moogerah. The studentsparticipated in a range of activities such as abseiling, kayaking, team sports and even a mud run! The focus of the campwas to continue to develop relationships across different yearlevels and allow all students to develop their leadership andteam work capabilities. This was certainly put to the test whenstudents camped out under the stars and had a ‘bush dinner,’in which they all had to assist with the preparation and servingof the food. Thank you to all of the staff who gave up theirtime to assist with the planning and facilitation of the camp – allstudents involved had a great time and we are looking forwardto our 2017 Surf Camp!
