Historical Shift is a place where anyone can come, experience, and learn, through the architecture and its programs,

about the history of not only the Farnsworth House, but of Mies van der Rohe and his other projects. The layout is basedupon the Farnsworth oor plan and its grid. Also, the majority of Historical Shifts furniture are replicas Miess designs. Eventhough Historical Shift is based off of Miesian design concepts, mainly from the Farnsworth House, it is also symbolizes ashift in architectural eras. Historical Shift demonstrates a transformation from the modern eras aesthetics and layouts,which Farnsworth was built in, to the contemporary eras design elements of today.

Visitors can view a physical model of FarnsworthHouse. Also, they can view historical images &read about the history of Farnsworth house as anarchitectural artifact and home to Edith Farnsworth.

Visitors can view various historical images and readabout the life of Edith Farnsworth and Mies.

Visitors can view a physical model of other Miesprojects such as, Barcelona Pavilion, S.R. Crown Hall,and Tugendhat House. Also, they can view historicalimages & read about the history each project.

Visitors can view various furniture designed by Mies,as well as sit in the chairs.

SITE LOCATION: Historical Shift is located close to River Road atthe highest area on the site. This location allows the building to beeasily viewed from road. Its high altitude helps prevent ooding aswell. Historical Shift is far enough away to allow for the FarnsworthHouse to stay hidden, yet it is close enough to prevent a long walk

to Farnsworth House.

FLOOD MANAGEMENT: In order to control ooding duringstorms an outdoor terrace/ sitting area is designed where thetopography starts sloping down. By using the topography water

is able to ow downhill and circulate through the vegetation, andpermeable stone pavers. One is able to walk to the steps andenjoy the greenery and sit to fellowship with hours, such as havinglunch or studying.

PATHWAY TO FARNSWORTH: A series of planar shifting andintersecting pathways are created in order to lead and providea clear pathway to Farnsworth. The paths lead to the road whereone could catch a bus to the house or walk and just enjoy thelandscape.
