other church leaders to found the SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference).
• African American churches would play a prominent role in the movement for civil rights.
• They were places people could gather to show support for one another and hear a common message.

• Sit-ins were a form of protest in which people would sit and refuse to leave.
